So, what do Christians and Kiters have in common???

They both pray for something they can't see?

Kites go in the sky and that's where god is?

They both talk a lot of shit?

Give up?.......... :dontknow:

The thing that Christians and Kiters have in common, is that Easter is the most important time of the year. :clapping:

That's right it's time to start the thread for the 2015 Extreme Kites Easter meet @ Yeppoon. :drinks::friends:

Yeppoon is one of the best spots for kite buggying in Australia, with a super wide and rock hard beach. There is usually enough beach for buggying from 1hr either side of high tide, so it allows for long days on the beach and some big distances to be clocked up in the buggy.

It is also a very quiet beach and even over the easter weekend, the beaches where we buggy remain uncrowded.

In 2015 the dates for Easter are Friday 3rd April - Monday 6th April

But like every year there will be a few of us that stay for longer, to enjoy the stronger winds that always show up just after Jason (from BrisKites) goes home :D

This time we will be staying an extra 2 weeks after Easter, which coincides with the school holidays.

There will also be the usual BBQ on the Easter Saturday night for all the kiters and their families.

You can book accommodation through Driftwood Units. It's right on the beach and has a large grassy yard to park the buggies and lay out kites to dry.

Or there are plenty of other accommodation options in Yeppoon

Hope to see all the regulars there again and maybe some new faces. And who knows, 2015 may be the year we tempt some Victorians to finally head north for a holiday :derisive:

In the meantime, here's some video from last year to get you excited

Excellent Post Andy :good::clapping:

I will be there again even though I will probably still be on Buggying Ban

But at least I will be able to chase you guys with the quad and get some footage. :drinks::crazypilot:

PS. I was checking Yeppoon on Google Earth last night. Pays to set the date to 4/2/2013 and play spot the kite :derisive:

Yeh, I've locked it in Andy.

Can't wait.

I will arrive in Rockhampton Thursday morning the 2nd April and will leave on Monday the 27th after Anzac day. :yes3:

Cheers

Come on Chris and John H, get your bum up to Yeppoon as I'd really like to meet you guys.

Bit the same as that Marty fella. :derisive:

Hoping a newbie to buggying is welcome?

It's Bernie here. I'm lucky in that I just happen to live almost across the road from Driftwood in Todd Ave and right on Farnborough Beach.

After a quick go in a buggy trailer one of you guys had last year (Andy?) I finally got my own buggy (Libre) a couple of months ago. Been getting to know the beach and slowly getting the hang of my buggy and kites.... Can also offer use of large shed/workshop at my place over Easter if needed.

Goz - Gannet in NZ also suggested I look you up as a local kiter - I was lucky enough to be in NZ last week and got out on Murawai Beach with him after I bought an Ozone Method off him.

So any Yeppoon buggy folks - happy to kite anytime......

Hi Bernie, anyone is welcome to join in the fun & what a great spot to have a buggy. Yeah Goz is the local Rochamtonite to talk to about all things buggy related.

Thanks in advance for the offer of the shed, not sure if it will be needed, but awesome all the same. :good::clapping::good:

Hey Chook, just kidding on the family thing, Courtney only does a loom band Ferrari at the moment, but could be tempted into doing some english super car if pushed in the right direction :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Hi bernie

Yes mate newbies are more then welcome. My first year at yeppoon I was still a newbie myself.

Kiting at an event, with other people, is an excellent learning experience. You can watch other people's technique, ask for advice and try it out immediately.

And you definitely have the ideal location, we are all jealous!

Totally agree Andy!!!! :good:

I was very raw my first trip and was given heaps of support.

I posted all my gear to Gozzy, who was a complete stranger I had never met.

Jas at BrisKites sent a S2 to him as well for me. Goz stored it for me as well, till the next Easters.

I hired a car and met up with Rob Lukin at Driftwood and he's picked me up from the plane in Rocky each year since.

There are heaps of fantastic people in this "the worlds best kept secret activity".

I had never kited with anyone else, let alone mixed it up on the beach with lots of buggys.

I learnt heaps and every year pick up more tips from the Eastern fellas

I really look forward to meeting you....................and Marty.

Thanks guys - really looking forward to meeting and getting some tips. In the meantime I'll keep learning by making mistakes on the beach. Made it to Bangalee and back one afternoon this week - but then the next day managed to drown my kite as I stalled the buggy trying to cross Barlow's Creek! Maybe by Easter I hopefully won't embarrass myself too much....

Won't be long and you will be zipping back and forth from Bangalee to Creek many times in a session Bernie. Then you can look at tackling the run to Sandy Point and back, but take water a tow rope and wait for the conditions to be right before attacking that one ;) first time you do that is a awesome feeling. Will have to catch up with you at some stage, I have been absent from the beach for too long due to injuries otherwise I would have bumped into you by now.

Guys you have to get up here at Easter (or sooner) - as a newbie I seem to have the beach all to myself lately except for the odd Blokart which I generally seem to have the edge on...

To motivate you all I want to remind everyone how good the beach is here at Yeppoon. The past few weeks the wind here has been fantastic and I've been able to get 20+ km a day after work most days. The last three days wind was at 20-25k each afternoon.

Had to put my 6.5M Method away and have now got the hang of the 4M Toxic. Sometimes even that seems overpowered but I haven't flown much else to compare it to...

I've started using my Garmin watch to try and track times/distance - this buggying is just so addictive!! Need to brag a bit my new PB tonight over 1km of 1m 6s - my maths isn't great but I think that's somewhere near 55km/ph- and a fair bit of that was slowed by constant sideways drifting which I couldn't stop.... Feels fast and barely in control sometimes - what speed can I expect to get out of my Libre?

Have had a few 'skidmark' moments but no OBE's so far - no doubt I'll get it wrong before long and that might slow me down but for now the need for speed has bitten.

Anyway hanging out for Easter and to meet a few fellow buggyers :D

Cheers,

Bernie

what speed can I expect to get out of my Libre?

98.5kph :D

Mine's a full race, and I run it on barrows.

Yes you should be quicker than a blokart, I've only lost one beach run (had about 20 odd) to a blowie (pilot was the Vic retailer), and that was hard upwind.

Sideways??? A smaller kite.

You have too much power and it's pulling you sideways, so go smaller.

For running on a beach you can use less power than needed on grass.

So you can be quite under powered, but you will be able to build speed easily.

Go a 3m kite, and see the improvement.

Also, is the front washing out first, or the back wheels?

You might get a little better grip by adjusting your weight/tow point (by moving seat, or the down tube).

More weight or less pull on the front if it washes out, or more weight and less pull if the back slides first.

In a perfect world, both front and rear wheels should slide as one.

Posted

Thanks Nigel,

98km/h - wow! - can't imagine what that feels like in a buggy. On mine the front was getting light but the back slid, particularly under gusts so I do think the 4M was overpowered for the wind. When I kept the kite low I drifted and when I took it up it was trying to lift me out - and I'm 82kg! Will get a smaller kite when budget allows. Hope to get some advice from everyone at Easter as I'm new to all this.

Mate because the beach at yeppoon has so much room, start out down near the water and when the back starts to drift steer down wind a bit and head towards the dune. One of the reasons the back is drifting is because you are trying to hold a straight line along the beach and are actually steering away from the pull of the kite. If you go with the pull of the kite it will give you a sudden bump in speed.

You will see us at easter cutting across the beach to over take each other, before having to wash off speed again as we get close to the dune.

Kiting with other people at an event is the best learning experience. Asking advice, watching others techniques and testing out different kites :good:

I'm getting excited just thinking about that beach :clapping::crazypilot:

Thanks Andy,

Looking forward to getting some more tips from you guys at Easter. Quite a few people (and dogs) about on Farnborough after work at present as it's still school holidays. Tonight I went through Barlows Creek and out past Bangalee - clocked about 30k all up. Sand out there is harder and smoother but a bit nervous on my own and reluctant to really push it in case I come unstuck. Less people there so I'll practice the diagonal running with the wind.

Cheers,

Bernie

Hey Bernie good to see you're enjoying the good winds we have been getting of late.

Might be able to help out with the loan of a 3m if you need to go down a size.

Spent my money this morning on the 3 air tickets to get to Rockhampton this Easter. :yes3:

I will fly into Rocky at 7.25am on Wednesday the 1st of April.

I leave again on Monday 27th April.

I wont be contactable for a week or so on the forum, as I'm off to the bush fires in the South West of WA, as a relief crew leader.

Boy am I looking forward to a spell on the East coast. :good:
