I've recently discovered Adam Curtis' many excellent documentary series and he happens to have a new 3-parter airing now.

They deal with some amazingly complex and fascinating (at least to me!) issues, people and historical events, as well as the structures and patterns in society, economics and the media, Definitely mind expanding stuff.
If any of that appeals, Pandora's Box from 1992 is also well worth a watch and the insight into the history of the early nuclear power industry is very relevant following Fukishima.
On a different note, if you haven't already come across it then you must check out Carl Sagan's Cosmos - it is effectively the original Wonders of the Universe, and whilst a few years old (from the late 70s!) it stands up so well today; Sagan is one of my heroes, and is just a pleasure to watch and listen to, putting all his passion and humanity into this wonderful series. Vangelis provides the soundtrack too...
