The Duke Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Good news John, In that map you posted, the lake we use is the bigger one with the road accross it. The road is a raised section that may be evident in some of the photo's. The dates will most likely be the "B" dates because the fishing competition is on the weekend before Australia day (Wednesday), and we are usually limited to the dry lake and no beach while the fishermen have their lines spread out along the beach. Either way If there's no fires in VIC I'll be there. This venue is just majic and is not to be missed, along with a great crowd of fellow kite nuts that have become good friends over the years, the occasional beverage or two, and the beach campfire evenings..... Cheers, Dukey Quote
jolli Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 HI all, we are also planning to come along for the event! JOLLI Quote
sinbad Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 Ok Its official it is option A, people are getting there the Saturday before Australia Day. some will be fishing but the comp finishes 6:00 am sunday morning so we then have the beaches to ourselves until we leave. Get your names down as spaces will be filling up, as there is only about 40 miles of beach Quote

SoutherlyBuster Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 Zachary and I are 99.9% going. I'm all for it, just don't know if Zach will put up with the 7 hr drive from Melbourne to get there. Google reckons 7hr drive for the 538 km trip from Melbourne. My wife said why not fly there, well Adelaide is 300 km away and My Gambier 150 km. Just looking at Virgin Blue, Qantas and JetStar their clostest stop overs are Adelaide. So by the time you sort out car parking, hoping in and out of the plane and organising car hire, might as well drive there --- also more gear options if you drive all the way. Personally I think it would be a nice country drive to get there, plenty of interesting things to see on the way. What are the Melbourne kiters doing? Driving or flying? If driving I assume you are heading off on the 22 Sat Jan 2011 and returning on the 26 Wednesday, which leaves three days of pure kiting. Regards, Norman. Quote
sinbad Posted October 14, 2010 Author Report Posted October 14, 2010 Hi Norm Its 3.5 hrs drive from Adelaide its 2 hr od drive from mt gambier. Speak to dukey on here, he has done the drive a few times and know it well. i'm not sure if you would come in via mt Gambier, i thought you would head to boarder town then down to Kingston. But Dukey will be able to fill you in better. Hope to see you there terry Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 Thanks Sinbad, Thanks for the drive hours from Adelaide and Mt Gambier. I only mentioned My Gambier because it was the nearest big city that might have an airport. As I expected, air ports are not close enough to warrant going via air. Paraglider with a big fan mounted on well, that's another story. I haven't decided on the car route from Melbourne as yet, just let google maps do the work to get some travel distance and travel time estimates. Quote
Mick14 Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 Also some videos of previous years to check out..... (note download instructions on the page) http://www.akfa.net.au/information/video.htm Quote

Prawno Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Oh man this looks great, but i think i might be stuck on call for that weekend, time to start trying to weasel my way out of it. Very keen. Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Spoke to one of the local SA kiters about Kingston Cruise meet during speed week, if you are camping on the beach you need to bring a shovel and roll of dunny wrap, other wise you need to camp at the carvan park where there are toilets. Doesn't bother me, it's the beach for Big and Little SoutherlyBuster. Quote
nigel Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Spoke to one of the local SA kiters about Kingston Cruise meet during speed week, That was Terry, aka Sinbad. Quote
Mick14 Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 We have been camping about 1km north of the Long Beach Road access to the beach (2WD access). Long Beach Road is about 4km north of the town of Kingston. But next year we might go a bit further north, to look for a camping spot just behind the first sand dune - I'm still getting sand out of everything after 4 days of 20 knots. Quote
JKS Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 But next year we might go a bit further north, to look for a camping spot just behind the first sand dune - I'm still getting sand out of everything after 4 days of 20 knots. C'mon Mick .... that's like moaning about all the bloody money you have to count after winning the lotto Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 C'mon Mick .... that's like moaning about all the bloody money you have to count after winning the lotto Or was it a case of pointing the opening of the tent accidentally windward? Quote
Mick14 Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 My trailer was level when I parked it, but the wind actually eroded the sand from under the upwind tyre and it was on about a 20% lean by the time we left! Quote
Andyfly Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Work has approved my leave..... the Kingston caravan park has confirmed I have a sand-free, dry cabin to sleep in.. And I'm hanging to try out your salt-pan..... Looking forward to catching up with all the SA crew ..... soon... Andy....half packed... Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Leave approved for me too. Zachary and I will be coming. We will be braving it in the tent near by the beach in true pioneer spirit. Quote
sinbad Posted December 20, 2010 Author Report Posted December 20, 2010 Looks like we will have a big crowd on the beach looking forward to it not long to go Quote
sinbad Posted January 5, 2011 Author Report Posted January 5, 2011 Latest info http://www.akfa.net.au/information/king11.pdf Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 So it's getting closer to the event, now some more questions. I looked at the http://www.akfa.net.au/information/king11.pdf map, the arrow points about 22 km North of Kensington S.E., but reading Dukes reply on one of the threads he mentions a turn off to the beach about 2km North of Kensington S.E. Zachary and I will be camping on the beach. So where on this long stretch of beach will the camp be? Also for food preparation, we will not have a fridge so it will be all dried food which requires boiling with water before eating it. So I am hoping there will not be any restrictions on using camp fuel fired cookers. I'll bring either my metho fueled trangia or my LPG gas cooker. Will need to bring lots of water, I assume there is none on site. We plan to leave early on the Saturday morning from Melbourne. Regards, Norman. Quote
Slartibartfast Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Kind of here-ish. Just a little north of that drain outlet. The turnoff is about 5km from Kingston. Quote
