is sandy pt the best place for a landboard speed record attempt? any ideas for other locations? anna bay, seven mile, lake george, vic kite club locations??? if you suggest a place and date to get things moving then we can refine it and maybe we could have a landboarder get together? the only thing i see often is the racing in vic, i hope to attend one session in 2010 if you put it far enough into the future, and think about some simple logistics like accom and food, we should be able to pencil something in for 2010 for sure. or just start by having a landboarder shoot off from another buggy or kitesurf event?

yeah SLE seems to be unfairly ignored for land kiting. i know there are some downsides but as long as you are careful there must be some advantages as well. would be nice to see a well balanced comparison of ram air foil vs SLE for landboarding.

holy shit, i just about threw up when i saw that - problem is they can smell fear too! i'm going to just landboard for a while to recover from that if thats ok?!...

Hi RALKITE, i didn't want to bother you given its just early research, but thanks for the input. i'm still not sure how you found that board so quickly, i thought i'd be giving you a lost board fee for sure! thanks for the board specs, again it's great to get some rough figures when i'm starting out. re body dragging, i must thank you as last weekend at Broulee the Guvner generously lent me his T3 kite and 143 x 43 NBL board (not 100% sure tho) and we had two days of 20 to 25 knots and by the end i was pretty tired and lost the board a few times in a row. Sunday was nice as i think i may have done my first jump, i redirected and the timing worked by fluke and got a nice little moment where i popped up about 1 foot off the water, and floated down and promptly crashed. despite the abs giving up at this point i was able to body drag for 10mins and eventually back upwind and make a quick exit, avoiding the walk of shame up the beach. cheers! i'm just starting to look at 2nd hand kites and i still like the Eclipse Thruster I learnt on, although i'm aware you probably favour the kite you learn on. it'll be the new year by the time i can even look again, and i may not even buy water kit this season but summer 2010 will be looking good. that flatwater at the south end of Broulee is just too good to resist forever. landboarding on smooth hard sand on the low tide is nice way to finish the afternoon as well

thanks heaps guys this is just the kind of ballpark figures I was after - awesome advice thanks.

hi guys, nice work on the speed run SB. i am yet to measure my speed on the landboard. i have no idea how fast i go, will be nice to find out. i sit just under 30 knots on the windsurfer in the meantime, here is a post i put up on seabreeze regards a fancy way to plot a GPS trace using Google Earth v5. it should work equally well for land based traces! http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56763

saw this ad on the morning TV about half the price of an aquapac http://waterproofpouches.com/

is that speed in knots - 40 knots is fast?! looks like an awesome spot you have there, mind giving the GE coords out of interest?
-
hi vipar, both your cabrinha and the north x-ride sound like awesome boards and it looks like 2nd hand = 1/2 price which is awesome, but i'm afraid i have to save up for a kite first then the board, so no doubt both those deals will be taken by then as they sound like great value. basically now i've got the magic word "freeride" in mind i should be right when i do go for something - cheers!
-
thanks for the advice koma, great stuff. glad i didn't rush into a wakestyle then. i do like the sound of the freeride for what i want. what is the idea with length, long vs short would affect spins and overall area but i'm not sure what it might all mean? yep had 7 days of all day instruction with Tony from RALkites and learnt everything the right way and was able to cruise around Sandy Pt more or less at will (except for that time I lost the board in the tide )

Hi all, all the best for the summer. i'm hoping to gain some wisdom from the internet! i learnt to kitesurf about a year ago and have not done any since. i might be getting a 13m PL Scorpion kite 2nd hand, and am looking for a kitesurf board on the 2nd hand market. i've seen a few boards that have high ratings for wakestyle and freestyle, and a low rating for waveriding. but i'm a bit confused about what it might mean. if i want to learn on flatwater, then progress to say small waves at broulee, NSW, what would be a good make and model to start with? i guess i'm after an all rounder to begin with. i saw a gaastra satellite at 45cm wide listed as good for newbies but i think this will cause more trouble in the surf? or can i just buy anything around 130cm and it'll be ok? i'm about 180cm tall and weight is 75kg. any advice is much appreciated. Kurt.

welcome Ligerzero, i might be able to meet you out at Amaroo this weekend as well. let us know what times you might be out there? -
Agreed, have just ordered one. I looked around a lot for helmet cam mounts but nothing even came close to being this good - it looks perfect! This happens to me more and more, I search the net for ages and find nothing!!! is this the first sign I'm being left behind the next computer age? Should get here next week, I'm looking forward to getting some footage on a larger kite to go along with my trainer kite clips! I guess my solution still stands as the $2 version vs. the ~$10's that is much safer for camera and rider alike!

thanks for protecting my brain even when it's not smart enough to protect itself JKS! true, i was aware of that but thought "nah it'll be right" - bad attitude hey? and it is right, right up until you stack! reading your comment has made me rethink now i've had a few big stacks using bigger kites - this is a big problem! i've only used the cam with my trainer kite so felt pretty safe. the bolt is really overkill anyway, a soft "bolt" with a bit of a metal thread would hold it in place. also a wide bit of elastic / velcro through the side slots of the helmet would hold the cam down and be ok underneath... hey wait a minute, i've already got that for my bike light! so all i needed in the end was the foam (high density packing foam from clark rubber, offcut only a few dollars) here is version 2!

the guvner and i met up for a late 1800 session in a 10 to 15 kt E on Rememberance Day - 11/11/09 i didn't have my gear so manned the camera i liked the way the tracks were showing in the setting sun i went for a promo shot at the end, what do you think? it's like the kite and boarder are toys out of the bag

this is my mount for my olympus 640 x 480 waterproof camera + video i have 3 vids so far with it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/skinduptruk total cost about $2 but took me ages to figure out and it was by accident. i tried fancy cutouts of foam at the top, then just used a scrap bit and got frustrated and hacked a slice in it, and bang, it worked better than my ideas!

sorry to make a bit of fun, being serious for a minute - i've windsurfed alot and have had really sore forearms and very stiff all over, but never a big lump in the arm. sounds like you might have ruptured something and might be worth a GP visit just to make sure you manage it properly.
-
why not form a club, then seek council permission to have exclusive use of the site? what exactly do you want? i thought kite tourists like normal tourists would boost the "local" economy?

here here! even the office worker from Canberra seconds that!

ahh thats them alright, thanks for tracking that down! with that name I found some more pics: http://www.invasive.org/weedcd/species/3937.htm with the green goo on the inside, the kevlar liners on the outside, and keeping an eye out for the damn weeds in the first place, we might stand a chance next year. towards the end of the day i did notice there was a nicer grassy area up on the higher side of the hill. however the thorns are probably all over the place. all up i used 12 patches over my four tyres and they are staying inflated for now. by next year they will be good test pilots for the new system.
-
i've been told that moutain bikes can get tyres with kevlar already in the tyre liner so maybe it's a case of convincing a tyre maker to do a custom job for 200 x 50 mm tyres? as for the thorns, i really wish that i brought some home to scan in and show you. once you see these bad boys you'll realise how hard it will be to beat them! they were up to 20mm long and damned tough and sharp - a marvel of nature really!

i gave the spinskins place a ring. race is superlight so i'd go with duro. 2 x 20" (40) strips should do 4 x 8" (32) wheels with some left over i was planning on getting some wider duro BMX stuff (2" vs. 1.5" wide) and using some cheap tin snips from bunnings i have to cut it, they are cheap and could be re-sharpened? you get 3 for $10 or something silly, and they have plenty of leverage, but not that sharp... stanley knife? it would only be a series of 4 or 5 cuts of a 2 inch strip... but this is all just theory, i haven't seen the product yet regards buggy tires, maybe just use multiple strips side by side? could get expensive.
