gday jhsg, i used to landboard at amaroo but am in tas now. that camera drone looks really cool, do you think it could be programmed to follow your GPS coords and film? anyway, here's a vid of my first landboarding in Tas at a nearby beach (smooth winds guys a few weeks ago: http://www.extremekites.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=16269

sure no worries, i will keep an eye on the wind i have another buddy that joins me often too, so maybe the three of us can meet up. husky is magic too.

hi sarge, there are a few variables such as wind direction and number of trees along the shore edge that would make either place better than the other i suppose. there was a steady little NW breeze a few months ago and it made me wonder about the run from the GG's house up the rowing course on a big Flysurfer 15m... but there is literally a nursery of trees about 100m downwind! anyway, hopefully will see you around the canberra (amaroo) landkite scene or on the water sometime down the coast... i've been to husky, lake tabourie (wario beach), broulee, lake coila, or in between somewhere! lake george would be legendary but as above v hazardous. maybe one day. a few months ago i would have said 12m too big but i think the 30 kt winds have dropped...

hi magoo, i have a good half a dozen places to try kiting on the coast, most of them i've tried out, some are only in theory but look good. happy to meet up sometime and have a chat, or whenever we meet up at amaroo... all the best. PS. with all this rain there are some unusual lakes that are re-appearing. obviously lake george but there others that are filling. however to take these on would require experience, ideal conditions, and a buddy would be must, maybe trailing on a windsurfer, if not full powerboat support. high risk but would be possibly a once in 10 year experience?!

tried again today, same thing, nice when setting up then a storm and gusts and i pack up without flying
-
tried to go to Amaroo today. it was nice for awhile setting up but just as I was ready to launch the 30kt+ gusts returned and ruined the day

re-reading this due to it being linked. to answer about lofting, this is my theory (only a theory): the 25kt easterly has to come under commonwealth bridge, and over some hills near the CYC, plus some hills along the southern lake edge generally. I think this leads to turbulence up above the normal windsurfing level, so this dude got picked up into those. I think any inland waterspot will have more potential for turbulence vs. the coast.

Hi guys, until they do a serious clean up of the logs, i strongly suggest you don't bother, hitting the debris could be fatal (impact / tangled up) for less than 3 hours drive, goto the coast or coastal lakes eg. st. george's basin / huskisson or lake coila / broulee. better wind, clean water. lake george has a trace of water but there are other hazards of fences and boggy mud i hear... Kurt.

where were they launching from? I checked a spot for launching in an easterly near the telopia park drain water looked gross. parkes way rowing course might just work in a NW heading to the gg's house! or just yarralumla bay with the windsurfers but not much room. I've windsurfed between parliament house and Anzac parade, maybe you could try a strong easterly for that since it's a bit sheltered other than east west and west is gusty on sat I used my PL scorpion on water for the first time went ok at Broulee in 15 to 25 knots. heaps of bar pressure but I need to check the VPC settings are set right I'd like to try lake coila, sanctuary pt aka st georges basin (jervis bay), and lake tabourie entrance (also sand boarding but it might be a few weeks away yet upcoming event is the corona merimbula classic late nov

Hi guys, i'm planning ahead, so it would be from november onwards... if someone out there is looking to upgrade their kiteboard this summer, i'm looking for something 130 - 135cm and about 40cm wide... not fussed about carbon / fibreglass, but would like proper foot bindings. i'd like something intermediate / freeride, not wave / jumps or otherwise expert just yet. any further advice welcome. i'd be looking to kitesurf at broulee with my PL 13m scorpion in about 15 to 25 knots. swell up to about a meter i suppose. Thanks, Kurt.

would have liked to join you but i am all snowed out this year... how did it go?

yesterday out with Stu at Amaroo and a gust of wind pulled me forward and i stacked awkwardly on my left elbow. my left upper arm propped up my body weight and my left shoulder blade made a series of "squishing" type noises (ligaments). muscles were sore but are no longer painful, ligaments still are... i've asked Dr. Google and it seems that I have been lucky with only a grade 1 tearing of the ligaments. i read they should stop being sore within 1 month and back to 100% within 1 year. makes me think: is it worth thinking about how to fall? i think i hung onto the bar until the end which made the elbow contact first. if i let the bar go early and aim for both arms and knees hitting the deck it might spread the load a bit...what do you think? PS. calls for HTFU already noted - thanks!

no footy, max 14, clearing skies, sounds good for this weekend? i hope to be out there around lunch.
-
looks like i won't make it this weekend, but one day... and i'll be sure to let y'all know if it's any good
-
any ideas? where, when? i'd still like to try Lake Tabourie entrance, lots of sand, seems to have both N and S wind exposure but i have not tried it myself yet. camping is walking distance to beach. there's a slim chance i can make it there this weekend...

please do let us know what you learn during your research. i have asked a bit as well and have been told there are some areas you can pull over on the highways around the place, and therefore avoid the fees for resorts. for example, if there was enough snow, you could cruise up to Kiandra rather than Perisher or Thredbo. However it's much more rare to get that much snow, so then you are stuck looking for high places. snowkiting is fundamentally different to downhill or even cross country, so what might be useless terrain for them could be perfect for you. the cross country people can handle trees whereas we want big open spaces, and maybe some rolling hills. as for hills, i've been told the mt kozi / rams head range is quite good, roughly here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaman%27s_Hut. note that high elevations means you have to know what you're doing, take an experienced buddy or start with safer options. don't think about camping unless you're very experienced - i'm not! i know nothing for VIC or NZ but I am also on the lookout for a trip one day. i even looked up Canada at one point just for the fun of it. France has a massive snow kite, and all kites, scene. type in "chasta" in youtube and sit back for a few hours...

gusty day, took me awhile to launch the PL Gav had some fun... I was already running after my kite in the background, but seeing a kite buggy that high, I kept on running... Gav seemed OK. After you guys left, I got another hour in the variable conditions, only a few more good runs, wind got a bit patchy late in the day, although the sky cleared up nicely and wasn't so cold by the end, with a nice bit of afternoon sun.

looks like sunday is the go, no footy and BOM says: I might have already put up this link, but here is the TAMS version of the booking sheet: http://syndication.sportsgrounds.act.gov.au/Amaroo%20101.pdf http://www.tams.act.gov.au/play/sport_and_recreation/sportsgrounds_and_facilities/sportsgroundbookings/sportsgrounds/amaroo_1/101

Hi V-rap, nice to see a west aussie - i don't understand your claim that you don't get much wind, i thought WA was windsurfing heaven? my 2 cents: start asap - as small as possible. i bought a 1.5m two line trainer from "new" (based in WA) off ebay. great little kite, still play with it, and lend to new people to try. will teach you basics. i would suggest de-power over foil for landboarding, and for learning especially. the de-power allows you to keep your balance much more easily. you said you want both land and water. best to buy a LEI and land kite, but consider a Peter Lynn. I have a 13m scorpion and it works on land, have not tried on water but it is possible (land kite would get wet and stop). PL are also able to handle gusts well, which suits my ACT location. also have heard it's good for gusty snow kiting, but again I have not tried that myself yet. think about body protection. i use knee pads, padded crash pants, wrist guards, gloves, body armour, helmet, sunnies (impact + UV), sunscreen. it's annoying sometimes, but i always regret when i skip on something, the injuries you get are usually quite unexpected, unique and painful I've learned that bruising and ligament damage takes around a year to come good - and i've only had minor crashes. guess what - it happened when i skipped on the crash gear! finally, since you are into kitesurfing, why not get lessons from a local professional instructor and learn that first, then try land. the kite control will be good to know, and water is softer than land. that's what i did, and i think it helped a lot. Kurt.

the forecast is for light variable winds in CBR i'm thinking of going down the coast for a day trip tomorrow...

hopefully a few of the guys here have pm'ed you about the risks. i've never kitesurfed the lake but have windsurfed. my advice is don't try in winter. strong gusty westerlies and cold water aren't worth it. in summer you might get an easterly, but be careful as there is some turbulence at the best of times. the lake bed can be rocky in places, there is the wall to deal with and setting up areas are limited. we've all seen the massive thermal lofting on youtube. the 2nd highest lofting i've seen was a guy in about 2002 being lofted in a 25kt easterly on the lake. probably an old C kite tho if we are really lucky the kingston foreshore development will give us some sort of area to setup and launch for a quick kitesurf in the long summer evenings luckier still, the will take out the powerlines, and smooth out the dairy farm at that eastern end and we'll have a sweet kitepark for land and water! http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=-35.309091,149.158709&geocode=&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=-35.308857,149.158502&sspn=0.025355,0.066047&ie=UTF8&ll=-35.309049,149.158716&spn=0.012678,0.033023&t=h&z=16 compared to all this hassle, you could wake up a few hours early and drive down to broulee which has a great flat water spot down at the southern end. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=-35.855,150.183&sll=-35.852535,150.185122&sspn=0.025184,0.066047&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=-35.855422,150.18302&spn=0.025183,0.066047&z=15&iwloc=A
