I Know I'm being a bit cheeky, but I've just listed a stack of kite gear All in Torquay if anyone needs to add some new (2nd hand) Kit to their trip. including my MBS pro 90 mountainboard. Awesome land kite board. Either way, looks like some wind is on its way. Not much swell down here today so landboarding might be the go. Unfortunately I'm off kiting for a while due to injury. you had us at... (hello)... 20 + knots!! Overhead waves!! Spring kiting in NZ Reckon I could manage airfair and to pump my own kite.
-
from the description of your local conditions plummet, I reckon we could get a plane load of our local wave riders to demo their best recovery techniques for you. Not sure if it would be helpful, but surely sounds like a lot of fun! When should we book our flights?
-
crashing in the surf! So many variables here plummet. The obvious answer in the surf is to keep your kite flying at all costs. This however is not always as easy as it sounds and really depends on your local conditions. We ride mainly cross-on winds and when we get decent swells, which we often do, we lose truckloads of power as the kite, wind, swell and ocean currents are all pushing in the same direction. The old school local kiters say "we never get wind and swell together" but I think that what they really mean mean is that the combined effect of these elements is that of a light wind day! The underwater loop recovery works well sometimes (IMHO). I say sometimes cause it depends on many things: the least of which are swell-size, current, and wind speed / direction. For my local conditions its usually a small swell option due to combined effect of our local conditions. If You are riding in any swell of consequence (overhead at least), with accompanying currents, a wipeout may (and probably will) result in slack lines. Try as you might, any attempt to loop will result in a dumped kite. You will lose line tension and thus any turning speed (sometimes any ability to steer at all). This is magnified as apparent winds decrease as opposed to current and increased swell. In these conditions you may find far more success in simply trying to fly your kite to it's zenith and let it drift back until you are able to maintain some line tension and therefore kite control. My personal experience in a decent wipeout is to try (as best you can) to keep your kite in the air. My personal technique involves trying to remember where my kite was before I F*****d-up and then counter act the tumbling affects of the ocean (ignoring any impacts with reef or sand bottom), and try as best I can to fly my kiter UP! ie: pull left or right on my bar depending on where the kite was when i wiped out. By the time I pop up to the surface I am happy to get a breath of air, and even happier if my kite is still flying! In decent swell you can be quite aggressive with your steering input as line tension will more than likely be slack when you wipeout and therefore your steering input will be significantly dulled. (please note if you are lucky enough to ride cross-off / or offshore wind conditions you will not lose line tension due to opposing swell. If Your local conditions see you ride opposing wind, swell/current conditions you may experience increased apparent wind). If you are really starting to push your limits in decent waves I suggest that "nailing your relaunch" is just as, if not more important than keeping your kite in the air. I say this cause no matter what, your kite "WILL" go down at the worst possible moment in the most inopportune position........ and it is only recovery from here that will truly give you cred from your mates!!!!! Not sure if my description is helpful for your local plummet. Basically I'm just trying to say that as you spend more time in the surf you get better at reading your local conditions. I have found that there is no one easy save, but more an accumulation of skills that both help you avoid, recover, and survive a sticky situations! I do believe however that if you never drop your kite in the surf your not trying hard enough! Enjoy, stay safe, and look after your mates! cheers Fav

Well, after a few false starts I finally got to demo the new 2011 Crazyfly Slash kites from Stonker in Torquay. They cleared customs Friday afternoon and I had the pleasure of riding both the 9m and 7m at Pt. Henry (Friday) and Torquay (Sat). Before I do my review here's the all important disclosure: Riding Style: Freestyle, some unhooked & addicted to Loops (Intermediate/"wanna be" advanced with dreams of looping like Lenten!) Surf (mainly hooked in, always unstrapped, and there's never enough waves) Test Wind: 9m 15-25knots. 7m 20-30knots. Rider weight: around 85-90kg...depending on how many pies I've eaten.... don't listen to my so called friends here Boards: flatwater '08 Lenten lunacy 129. Surf Webber 6'0 x 18 1/4 epoxy I buy my kites with my own coin. what I'm After: I'm looking for a kite that will push my loops/unhooked riding but still performs well in the surf. I have ridden slingshot fuels'06, 07, North Vegas '06,'08 and have been riding the 2008 North Rebels (7 & 9m) for the past couple of years. My Rebels have performed well, especially for the surf riding but are a little limited now for my kiteloops. I was looking for something that has more pull than my rebels through the loops and always flys back above to catch the landings (something my 9m rebels struggled to do) from bigger powered loops. I've now had the opportunity to ride the Crazyfly Slash 9m and 7m both in the surf and flatwater. I have had 2 sessions on each and havn't stopped grinning. Obviously this is going to be a positive review but it didn't seem that way from the start. The demo kites were the first kites shipped for dealer review and did not arrive ready to ride straight out of the bag. There was a quick adjustment to line length a required before they could be tested. Apparently this has already been rectified for commercial shipment. O.k so with my only negative out of the way here's my review: The Slash is a 5 line C kite with a very basic uncluttered bar setup. The bar is small, with a soft comfortable grip that made me feel like I was at the controls of a high powered sports car. It has "push away" quick release safety and below the bar depower that is easy to engage. the chicken loop aligns easily for unhooked riding and overall I really liked the feel of the whole setup. The kites themselves look really well made. Material and stitching looks strong with obvious attention to detail during production. The Slash is a 5 strut C kite. It has multi-point inflation, which although not everyones preference is something I personally prefer as it allows the struts to be inflated harder. There are no pulleys or bridals, as you would expect with a true C, and consequently it delivers a smooth powered feel. Bar pressure is much lighter than what I was used to but there was no doubt as to where the kite was positioned. There was plenty of depower available through the throw of the bar and power delivery was smooth and precise. The Slash has 3 choices of flying settings from freestyle - wakestyle and fast or slow settings for rear lines. I tested both kites on the middle front line position between freestlye and wakestyle and on the fast rear line settings. I didn't play with these settings but plenty of room to tune the kites to suit your riding style here. Both the 9m & 7m were fast flying responding extremly well to rider input. They generated plenty of power when worked through the lulls in the wind giving them a great wind range. These kites feel extremely stable in the air, with good feedback as to where they are at all times whilst maintaining a light bar pressure. Unhooked they feel smooth and stable producing a constant pull with heaps of pop. I also loved the way they drift back nicely in the surf with no sign of back stall, allowing me to concentrate on surfing without fear of dropping my kite in the impact zone. Both kites exceeded my expectations as flatwater/surf kites. I had my 1st 2 sessions on the 9m and was ready to go out and make the purchase. It wasn't however until the wind came up late Sat arvo and I got to test the 7m that I was truelly sold. To say that the 7m Slash is a looping machine is an understatement! I rode the 7m in 20-25knots maybe 30knot gusts on butter smooth Pt Danger flatwater. With all but a few local riders left for the day I was able to push my looping limits. I am pleased to say that the 7m Slash is super fast and stable through the loops. Generates shitloads of power and catches you everytime! This kite can do so much more than what I'm currently asking it do thast it isn't funny. I may never have the balls to do a megaloop lenten style but for those who do this will not let you down. Anyway after demoing these kites I have made the purchase. They may not be for everyone but well worth a test ride. Ive attached some pics for you to look at. cheers fav

well, i didn't end up with my demo kite , slash still not in country, but I did have a great day in solid surf on my 7m then 9m rebels and surfboard . hope everyone else got some decent riding today and as soon as i can get hold of the kites i will post my review. cheers fav

Wow, not a very complimentary review of last years Trix there Jason! I had noticed that Crazyfly have dropped the Trix from the 2011 range. I thought that they were just extending their range but maybe some faults were the reason. If so I expect that they will have gotten rid of any problems with these new kite designs and re-designed 2011 bars. . I havn't got my hands on the Slash demo yet, hopefully this arvo, but when I do I will have a really good look over the kite / bar & lines (especially around the areas highlighted from last years kites), take some pics and give my review. I really Hope I get to ride the 7m Slash today cause the BOM is forecasting 30-40kn SW Great kite testing weather! cheers fav

I've been doing some research on new kites and came across these new Crazyfly kites. I have ridden the Crazyfly boards in the past and loved them. Given the build quality and performance of their boards I am eager to have a look at their kites. Crazy fly have introduced 3 kites for the 2011 season, as follows: The slash (c kite) http://www.crazyflykites.com/cf2011/kite-slash.php The Sculp ( flat delta shape) http://www.crazyflykites.com/cf2011/kite-sculp.php and the MooWii (flat delta for schools learners etc.) http://www.crazyflykites.com/cf2011/kite-moowii.php All pretty crazy names, I know. But I am particularly interested in the Slash to push my freeride, in particular looping If all goes well I will have a demo of the Slash from Stonker in Torquay this weekend. I'll make sure I take some pics and post a review. cheers fav

I was pretty lucky really, strained the medial and cruciate ligaments in both knees after a "hot" kiteloop landing on the back of a swell/chop. Didn't need surgery, but was off the water for over 3 months. Been working my way back slowly, mainly cruising and wave riding (whenever possible). Kiteloops are adictive!!!!! I didn't learn my lesson and I still dream of going huge 1 day!! probably only a dream but watching vids like these and seeing what our local legends (you know who you are ) are capable of I live in hope. Spent this arvo, in light wind, throwing down my 2nd session of highly underpowered loops to test the knees. All's good so far. Just need to choose the right conditions and build slowly.
-
o.k, my knees are nearly better and I havn't learnt my lesson! Its spring and my mind has wandered back to looping! here's some more inspiration from the king.... last 1/2 of vid got some wicked loops! sorry couldnt link I'm such a techno phobe! so here's the link http://www.kitecinema.com/len10/LEN10-in-Capetown-360p.mov I know it's not new... still awsome loops!

link added, sorry. those guys are mad!
