mystyc Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 does any one out there ride with body armour?? I have started riding on an old air base, with large amounts of tarmac and was thinking of getting some torso padding. Any body have any thoughts on which brands are best and most comfortable to wear whilst flying kites. cheers tim Quote
adamski Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 I use my Motorcycle armour!! I would suggest the UFO plastics set. It is mounted on a mesh underjacket and is adjustable within a set range, so buying a large will allow for some variation in bodysize. I have had a go with Dainese stuff and it is LOVELY too, just....erm...welllll... it looks a little "gay stormtrooper" in the greyish white I have had some HARD falls in the UFO stuff and it really does it's job!! DON'T forget that if you are on tarmac wear an ACU gold approved helmet!! The kite and mountainbike ones are ok on sand but would do nothing for you on tarmac!! Quote
adamski Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Forgot to say, I may know NOTHING much about kites but I have years of experience of falling off of/getting hit by/trapped under fast moving bikes, cars and boats! WEAR THE PADDING! Quote
mister_burns Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 not sure with relation to the torso and flying. I use helmet, knee and elbow pads when flying, and have got some of those dainese shorts for snowboarding on order. I only hear good things abot the Dainese protectors, if it's good enough for motorcyclists, heck it's good enough for me. Not sure if you're any clearer now, but hey… Quote
springtide Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 I have had a go with Dainese stuff and it is LOVELY too, just....erm...welllll... it looks a little "gay stormtrooper" in the greyish white There's nothing "gay" about the Dainese body armour Quote
Skydude Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Mystic, Check this Link out. I haven't tried it but it looks good and I was thinking of getting some... P.s. Where's this airfield ? pm me if it a secret, pretty please.......me thinks the buggy would enjoy tarmac..... Quote
mystyc Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 hAS ANYBODY TRIED THE DIRT BACK PROTECTION JACKET?? LOOKS QUITE LIGHT BUT PROTECTS THE SPINE AND POSSIBLY THE CHEST. DOSN'T HAVE SHOULDER PROTECTION, BUT THIS MAY BE RESTRICTIVE FOR KITING CHEERS Quote
Airwolf Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I think grit x is the perefct option between weight and strength. The Dainese is very good but a little heavy and expensive. Quote
bushflyer Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 ever since savage had his fall ive used the six six one SP1 pressure suit. its like the dianese but in better colours and a lot cheaper. it gives great shoulder and back/torso protection and isnt as bulky as the moto X type padding as its very snug and flexible. works for me, have a look on http://www.wiggle.co.uk whatever armour you get, trust me, it helps Quote
mystyc Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 Cheers guys, I reckon i might go with the cheap option for the time being and go for the scrub lightweight jacket and the scrub shorts (unless anyone has anything bad to say about them!). See how it goes. If I start falling real hard then i might upgrade. As bushflyer says, whatever it is, it has got to help cheers Quote
Flipper Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Nah you need help from Kite Bush..... she is well togged up and raring to go... Quote
Woppa Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Hee Hee. You said "Bush". *snigger* Quote
Chesh Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Hey bushflyer.. That site you put up is excellant.I had a little accident a few weeks ago and now I have been told to wear body armour before I fly again. So i'll be ordering the suit soon.Nice one ...cheers Quote
jimlard Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Have to agree with bushflyer on the 661 body armour. the sp1 03 pressure suit is first rate and very comfortable, protected my back, shoulders, elbows and forearms on a number of very procarious jumps (you know, landing badly flat on ya back). Only one problem, its great in the winter cause it helps tp keep you warm, but think in the summer it will make you sweat like a horse. Dont forget to wear your lid as back and shoulder prtoection is all fine an well but on most heavy landings ytour bound to crack ya head now and again. Oh! and the 661 03pressure suit looks the dogs danglers. Regards Jimlard Quote
mystyc Posted February 11, 2004 Author Report Posted February 11, 2004 I thought they might be a bit warm in summer, thats why i thought i might go for one without anything on the arms and just wear elbow bads, I suppose it is all going to be hot compared to just a t-shirt though!! Quote
anc Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 I wear a UFO plastic chest protection(used on motorcycles). some people think wearing armor makes you look stupid. but I think the opposite. when going 50mph down a beach with no armor then you look pretty stupid. a guy with good armor going 50mph looks much more professional(people can see the guy knows what he's doing), don´t you think? Like I said I use a UFO and knee pads and a helmet. I don´t go 50mph but I still like to feel that if I do get an OBE I'll be much safer with the armor. Quote
Batman Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Just following this thread as I'm look myself for protection against my frenzy and have come to the same conclusion with either 661 pressure suit, UFO (think its the shockwave with back support) or the grit-x combo. Just one question about the UFO and 661 stuff, do the hard plasic caps dig in when flyin, especially when our arms are poining towards the sky? Quote
Tempest_Riders Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 I am under the impression motorcycle body armor protects againts rock roosts that come off your wheels. This does not do much for what I need protection for. I use the standard elbow/knee/helmet which really does nothing for collar bones and back. Any ideas on something to protect against these injuries without putting on an something equal to a winter jacket. I work up a good sweat in the winter, I cant see throwing on a pressure suit when the temps start to climb above 90. Quote
tonyb Posted March 7, 2004 Report Posted March 7, 2004 Im into mountain boarding (MBS Comp16 pro) and Dirtsurfing (Flexideck) For less intense days (general grass riding) i wear a no name armour top (from ebay) a lid, grit-x padded shorts and dainese knee/shin gaurds. On the more extreme days (Dirtsurfing, free-riding, courses, tarmac etc..) i wear the dainese full shuttle pro kit (top/bottom all in one) grit-x padded shorts, fleshgear rip-proof trousers, 661 hand/wrist guards and a pro-tec full face lid The dainese isnt as hot as you'd think and dissipates moisture very well (just wear a t-shirt underneath.. gets smelly when sweaty!) Just one question about the UFO and 661 stuff, do the hard plasic caps dig in when flyin, especially when our arms are poining towards the sky? I was wearing the UFO one this weekend. I have "tested" it and can confirm NO Oddly shaped bones and it hasn't caused any cuts of it's own. You WILL need to spend some time setting it up for your body shpe, but once done it stays set. I was flying a Frenzy, blade, bullet and buster in it for about 6 hours at a stretch. Quote
bushflyer Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 regarding the 661, you buy it so its a snug, not tight fit. then adjust the strpas connecting the breastplate to the shoulder pads to the blade flying position (arms outstretched above your head) to give you enough movement. will agree ill be a bit hot in the summer, but thats a good excuse to get out on the water! Quote
SpeedTwin Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Tempest dianese as a number of other manufacturers do stand alone back protectors so you can keep all your other pads. Unfortunately broken collarbone are a symtom of the accident. You naturally put your arm out and the load gets transfered up the arm through the nice stocky bones untill it meets the rather weedy collar bone which just acts as a stabaliser to the shoulder. This is a very common bone to break in motorcycle accidents especially when racing even though they have top spec gear. Clive Quote
Stupid Dave Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 just wondered if its possable in the summer to were the 661 armor with out a tee or would it rub (im buggy jumping with it) Quote
beardyjim Posted May 31, 2005 Report Posted May 31, 2005 661 armor with out a tee or would it rub? the 05 661 does not rub and I have worn it under a t as well. the only this is that it does make you feel a bit more confident:) still getting used to wearing it but I like it:D Quote
