Yes exactly.

In the app you configure your "sports" parameters - ie whether or not to force a home landing, distance and height, and the type of follow (fixed, adaptive, circle). The drones position when tracking can be anywhere in relation to you - ie in front, behind, above etc

once you are actually flying, you can also reposition the AirDog wherever you like in relation to you ( closer, further away, higher, lower, circling). So you can achieve some dynamic shots in addition to the tracking shots

The closest is 5m from you, the max range is 120m according to the manual.

Did you see my first video in the park ? my son Lawson did most of the flying - he is 3.5 years old :)

A short press on a direction button moves it 2m in that direction.

A long press will send the drone constantly moving in that direction until a limit is reached - ie a min/ max altitude, or constantly rotating around the rider (left right)

It also has a play/ pause button so you can pause the drone and ride away / towards it, and then resume tracking by pressing play. The "target" looking button next Home is "come to me" which will bring the drone straight above you, at your take-off altitude

For or surfers it has a delayed takeoff timer so you point it in the right direction, paddle out and after the pre determined time, it'll take off and come looking for you

Takeoff & Landing are totally automatic. Landing can be either at Spot or Home, whichever you have set up and choose.

its rated up to 28 knots of wind speed, and can follow up to 70kmh

Nice one, Norman.  So while you're actively flying the quad, do you also have to keep the camera aimed at the glider?  That would take a bit of coordination....

Yes it does require coordinatation, there is a lot of chatter between Zac and I, like where are you Dad, Ok spotted you, now keep a steady heading, righto ... Ok I'll do a loop now etc. For Zac it is an extra challenge that he enjoys.

Maiden flight of my Pixhawk Test bed quad today, Altitude Hold and Loiter Mode worked surprisingly well. Told it to Loiter at 2m off the deck in a nasty gusty corner of the back yard and it held position to within 30cm of the point in space it was told to sit at and fairly solidly as well.

Control is by FrSky Taranis and Nexus 7 tablet with a 900mhz telemetry radios for uplink between the tablet and Pixhawk.

Going to mount a mobius camera gimbal on the front which will also run through the Pixhawk flight controller.

The frame is a flying test bed to sort out electronics before it is all transferred over to a Cinetank L Mk2 frame, which will be my aerial video rig.

Good to be back in the workshop tinkering on weekends and completing projects that have been on the back burner for the last 12 - 18 months.

PS. If anyone is thinking of getting a Pixhawk do not buy the cheap chinese clones, I made the mistake of  buying one at it was rubbish compared to the genuine 3DR version, the soldering and connectors on the clones is just rubbish.

Any my ideas about whether 30 or 60 fps ? My old Mac really slows down with 60 fps for the editing, would 30 be fine ?

If you plan on slowing the footage down then 60fps, otherwise 30fps is generally acceptable.

3DR is as much a clone as any other brand of pixhawk ;)

That may well be, but they are using better quality connectors that don't fall off the board as soon as you touch them, the soldering is a better quality and the sensors work much better when compared to the cheap Chinese knock offs. There may be better quality knock offs out of China, but the RC Timer Fixhawk ones are utter rubbish compared to the 3DR one. I have both and have seen the difference for myself.

It's not a case of "that may well be," you're perpetuating a complete fallacy that somehow 3DR is "original" and other manufacturers are "knock offs."  That logo must have really gone to your head, because the pixhawk platform is completely open source and the Chinese manufacturers are as original as 3DR is.  There's enough stories on the internet to show even 3DR send out poor quality batches from time to time.  Their after-sales support is also horrendous, and I found this out after buying original 3DR direct from one of their official resellers.

I'd buy a quality "Chinese" pixhawk over 3DR since then any day of the week.

If you find a proven good quality Chinese one by all means let me know where to get one from. Lots of clones to try out there, but do you know which ones are rubbish and which are good? The design may be open source but it doesn't mean they are all constructed the same using the same connectors and components.

Personally I wouldn't touch the RC Timer Fixhawk version again after my experience with it. From what I have seen a lot of the ones on Chinese websites look like they may be from the same production line with different names on the cases. The grey connectors on the board and the thin hard PVC wires are the dead giveaway to the fact they have cut a corner or two on the design specification.

The fact remains that the 3DR branded Pixhawk I got from an Australian reseller (who responded to emails and spoke English) is the much better unit out of the 2 I have purchased. When your shelling out good money for a product the after sales service from your point of purchase makes a difference.

Could you please give me an example of a "clone" ?

And what after-sales support regarding your 3DR product have you required from the retailer you purchased from?

Testing out my new quad with 45 degree uptilt on the FPV Camera, makes the quad a bit easier to fly at speed. Blackbox Logs show I'm still not opening up the throttle all the way yet. :)

Testing Roll Rate

Should be able to keep up with Chook for some aerial shots next Easter :P

Budgie the little Spark has a 2 axis Gimbal so smoothing those spins will take a bit of practice, however for a drone of suck size, it really did well in the windy conditions down there. it was the first 'Real' outdoor fly for both drones.

We tested the wind resistance, the range and the return to home features, Everything was amazing.

Mezz did some 'active track' with the little spark where you can get the drone to follow you based on shape recognition and it works really really well.

These little drone are amazing considering the low price.

The view from above shallow inlet gave a whole new perspective of such an amazing place.

I flew the mavic out from the sand bar right out over yanakie, some 3.5 k away twice on one battery. very stoked about the range.

This is Budgie the little helicopter,

I dreamt of Budgie last night - time for a fly somewhere @igeighty - I guess after you've finished making up the cases (Doug bought some Kaizen Foam, which pulls away in layers, so a quick trip to Bunnings last night for another case, he'll be spending this weekend designing and creating the foam inserts) I think we've found the perfect hobby for when the winds and tides (and temperatures) are not at their best.

Thanks for your comments @SoutherlyBuster - I just couldn't get enough of that sunset, it was soooo pweedy! That fly was just a general "get to know your drone" I can't wait to capture some kite buggy action along the beach. Should be well practise come our Kingston trip.

:crazypilot:@igeighty Prepare to get buzzed!

@igeighty has put his Adobe Illustrator and Auto-Cad skills to the test and designed the internal foam packing for the drones. His design was then water-cut into Kaizen foam.

One for “Budgie” the DJI Spark and the other for “Lionel” the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum and all their accessories. D892D827-9BD3-44A0-A14C-2012C6F2A1F0.thumb.jpeg.fcd80250ed0e42753be9f8e2fc48ff47.jpeg
