  1. Here now with music light sw sunny
  2. i think the 6km rule is used in combination with the 400 foot rule, ie. no kites over 400 feet within 6km of the AP otherwise i think we are fine, but yes please confirm with someone would be good, in writing. i reason that my kite is only really the same height as some trees nearby, and the kite will likely fall if it does somehow detach. if a plane hits my kite, they would be equally likely to hit the trees anyway. if turbulence does sweep it up into the air like a big plastic shopping bag caught in the wind, then that would be a definite problem! however i think you'd need about 30 to 40 knots for that much turbulence and maybe you shouldn't kite near AP in that weather to be safe. we do get winter cold fronts of that intensity from the W in the ACT sometimes. overall wind direction is a factor. a steady 20 knot E breeze and you are downwind of the AP - would be low risk.
  3. do you mean ACT? as a newcomer to the scene, all i can say is that here in the ACT for some reason we were very lucky to have several experienced kiters in Stu, Andy, Jonesy, and Ben. they turned up and did their thing, and it allowed the new guys with interest to get over that initial learning curve and to a point of being self sufficient. from there it feeds on itself. for example simple stuff like how to peg the kite down, and other little tips and tricks that save frustration. so all i can suggest is you two guys have to keep getting out there and visible, and help those passers by to get over that hesitation and into it. taking that further you might run a demo day but that is putting some pressure on and may not suit you. maybe EK KP BK can lend you a flag banner or something to draw some attention. also we have the Harden Kite Festival, which some other guys and I have attended over the years, just to demo the power kite scene.
  4. thanks for checking it out guys. i'm thinking landboards would be restricted to the firm stuff down on the flat, but buggies could make use of the softer ramps of sand on both the N and S sides of the entrance just in case it's an issue, i don't see how we might be blamed for "damage" to the area since the whole thing was underwater a few years ago, and probably will be the next time a ripping S swell comes up. i'm viewing this as a special chance that may take another 40 years to form (based on the 1960 photo). a bit like lake george in that respect. we might get to kitesurf it one day... but i agree, use precaution when there are many people about, as always.
  5. i have the PL Scorpion 13m and it does auto zenith a bit, as gusty winds will knock it around a bit and i have to correct it sometimes.
  6. i stayed at Kiola recently, and took the long way home to Canberra thru Nowra rather than Braidwood. as i drove up the princes highway, i saw a sign to lake tabourie and decided to drop in for no real reason - i'm glad i did. i weaved down to the tourist park, thru it and parked near the beach. when i got there, i was surprised to see a giant sandbar, which i think is quite new. this GE satellite photo is old: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=lake+tabourie+tourist+park&sll=-35.442823,150.41178&sspn=0.012237,0.033023&ie=UTF8&hq=lake+tabourie+tourist+park&hnear=&ll=-35.443173,150.411179&spn=0.006118,0.016512&t=h&z=17 see the 60's photo on this blog http://laketabourie.blogspot.com/ for more what it's like now. it says: from the angles it seems you would have the entrance in a N thru NE, the beach in an E thru SE, and the entrance again in a S to SW! all in the one spot, and a caravan park right on the beach.
  7. saw on win news tonite that sat / sun have been predicted to be windy - finally! oh, i see on BOM it's a low frontal system, damn
  8. i'll let you know once i reach that stage myself
  9. hi all, as you pack more kites onto one oval, the number of near misses increases. i agree that a good general rule for kites is "upwind kite high, downwind kite low". however this rule doesn't really cover all the variations of the ways that two kiters can cross paths. a simple example is when two kiters are heading towards each other on the same line across the wind, who will end up upwind of the other? the above rule should still apply, but says nothing about which kiter should in fact be entitled to the "upwind" position (see rule 1). another point to consider is the downwind kiter having right of way. i've seen upwind kiters doing large turns downwind to enter the zone of a downwind kiter, and i think the responsibility should be on the upwind kiter to turn earlier or tighter, or just pause and allow the downwind kiter to move away before entering their space from on high (see rule 2). my vote would be to adopt the sailing rules as a baseline as they cover wind sports already and kiting is wind based after all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_Rules_of_Sailing
  10. if you guys can describe what you want, i know someone who loves to do 3d modelling as a hobby and i'm sure he could whip something up. would you want both buggies and boards to feature? open cell and twin skins? thinking laterally for a sec, maybe flysurfer graphics department will do it "for" us if they get to put a little of their branding in, a win-win?
  11. http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_91039 Click on the Part 101 link. See Subpart 101.D Tethered balloons and kites Since our kites are below 400 feet AGL we are not affected by this. Council may be able to exclude areas at will? In the ACT I think it's TAMS that runs things on ovals.
  12. i haven't been there, but... i suggest talking to a local who has been before, there are a few hazards that i have heard of: bogged cars, fences, hard ground with abrasive soil and twiggy grass, and there are lots of flies! there are vids somewhere of years past. on the upside it's 20km by 10km and flat. i guess the smart thing to do is get a group and figure out access permissions from the farmers that hold the lease. then we could look out for each other and give it a go. however some of the locals have been there, done that, so you'd have to talk them into it!
  13. hmm 17 to 27 knots, NW can you put sandbags on the rear axle?
  14. with lake george looking all spongy, i wonder if anyone has ever tried mud boarding? that is, boarding in soft sand / water logged ground? first i ask for puncture proof tires, then i ask to board in mud... yes - we had no wind this weekend!
  15. this weekend was the most windless i've seen! bah! i wonder if we can go out to lake george, and flick the wind farms into reverse for the avo... easterly on demand!
  16. looking forward to the write up and pics or vids also if you have a gps file I'd like to check it out if that's ok
  17. 20kph here so far after about 6 months... for those with Google Earth try this file (speed in kph): http://hoponline.com.au/seabreeze/addisonovals.kmz
  18. Here now it's 10 to 20 and sunny make that 25! Nw
  19. Thought about MBS range? Also check the bindings they make a huge difference and can be $ to change. Decide if you want stability at speed or better turns as you need to choose between the two eg springs and washer stiffness
  20. i hope to make it, haven't been in a long while i put up posts about sub zero app. temp, now it's over 33 and climbing 15 to 20 kt W though...
  21. that clip is simply amazing! i can't believe how light the wind was, and the water was so tame due to the light wind, sweet! i'd love to have a go in those conditions i'm thinking about all the remote lakes you could hike to in the world with the lightweight foil, and once its 5knts up you get! would be awesome. would this work on the snow / sand dunes as well?
  22. I'm confused, south of Tas would be??? regards snow kiting, I plan to get some general snow camping and cross country skiing experience first with the ANU moutaineering club and then take the kite up one year when i feel confident enough with the whole scene. perhaps we could lead an expedition up into the TAS snow one winter?
  23. Hi Nik, please "entschuldigung" me, i have not been there yet, but would love to check out landboarding GER style hope you find a way to digitise that old skool format for us!
  24. 6m ozone access would be my perfect high wind kite for land and snow... sorry can't take it off your hands right now as well are you into snowkiting?
  25. Guten Tag Nik, Ich bin SkindupTruk, und Ich bin sieb und zwanzig Jahre alt. Spiele mit kites ist wunderbar. That last bit probably doesn't make sense, but that's all I learnt from 3 years of German in school! all the best, please post some vids for sure Tchuss! Kurt.
