  3. hi guys, Hey isn't the water level 2 high for running there? Thought they had cancelled the speed week because of that, same problem as last year or am i getting confused? It is a fast surface if dry n hard but may suck wet and windless - Lake Gilles (just before it) it is ment to be faster, don't now condition but is a gypsym surface and no facilities. luv istt
  4. do you have room for some old skool?
  5. you want the truth Joel, you can't handle the truth! You speak of gold and quality like it flows through the industry showering Porshes and virgins to the unrightous , Maybe you should take a turn on the wall and see how it flows to you . You say you have seen a so-called price list,, implying that there is a huge margin somewhere then go off on a long involved rant that has some relevance but does not change your general thrust of (see title" drop a 'this is under $1000' (maybe not pimipng -antipimping- you don't have to use any facts or realities for that) for good measure. this is wasting too much of everyones time buy a kite cheap or expensive go use it and then at the end of it's service bury it and lament it's passing reminising the fact that for the same money you can now buy one twice as good. luv istt
  6. whoa whats with this Joel guy pimping an unheard of product just to prove Steve somehow wrong? where is a moderator when you need one? Steve has put the facts of life about kiting up fairly straight and the best he can do is come up whith a lamo comback like that. Generally you get what you pay for (hope you support some local), I know the times I appreciate the quality throughout- when something turns nasty-that top 5% of conditions that spell trouble if you experience gear failure, misbehaviour or what ever issues. Sure most of the bigger more expensive gear Companies have had some lemons, but they generally support their kites This can also give you a confidence to try something because you ain't gonna have issues if it does go wrong. Sure a new offer comming out below a pricepoint is interesting but probably an introductory gimmick to gain a foothold in a crowded market, if a certain acceptable quality is kept even Best has found out the realities of this. Have seen this argument many times, have a look at any market and the base model cost has been stable, yet performance and quality has risen considerably For last 10 or more years the price for a shithot but computer has been around $2000, sure you can pay less and you can pay double, what has changed? Has making these products somehow magically got easier and higher tech? The cost of being in a sport such as kiting can be measured and how much you justify to spend is your own personal issue. Since kiting began you can do it on 2 kites and a board, or 2 boards and a kite, figuire on 2 seasons enjoyment from a kite -after 3 seasons you have to limit its use, sell it or give it away- if it is still safe. Boards will last longer or shorter, but a great board is worth keeping until it breaks. The more you spend intelligently can give you that little extra on days when ya woodda missed it, have laughed at many. luv the sport luv the ride luv istt
  7. bad luck Andy, its goin off here. luv istt
  8. have ridden one in a desert on dry lakes very stable but felt slow, was a 3/4 conversion and Nop changed the frt to buggy std and the 3wheels were faster, was fun in the offroad sorta way, but have more fun on a bigfoot and that can turn on a dime and boost. luv istt

  13. Why so we can have a tacking duel?, As a general rule of thumb , an airstrip will face into the wind, taxi ways are better, but shorter and generally leading towards large solid things like buildings. As to when depowerables can along statement, I am struggling with this statetement as well because your depowerable kite argument has the problem you mentioned, as they decrease the lift to depower but the drag portion in the equation remains higher as parasitic drag is fixed so they become less efficient, and can't rememeber ever seeing one out-perform, someone show me. To my warped mind this makes them less likely to be the faster on a speed run, don't know about racing in an upwind downwind situation, the extra size you can utilise maybe an advantage. luv istt
  14. sounds like we need a race track so you can observe some times focused on being faster with a big kite. luv istt
  15. ?? the bigger the kite the more drag, please explain? how would a bigger kite get more drag just by being bigger? the lift component in the l/d argument goes up at the same rate and the larger kite can run the same rigging as the physical load the kite is lugging can be the same so line and rigging drag can be halved by going from 2.5 to 10 sqm and has a visable effect on a kites envelope, in my book bigger kites can have less drag. luv istt
  16. Think clay base is faster than the salt ,and lake Gilles beside Gairdner has always been hailed as faster by the landyacht guys. My runs were on Lower Light beach which has a similar feel of asphelt when dragged accross it. As to the beans I think as the immortal words of Slim in Blazing Saddles, "i think you boys have had enough beans" trying to figuire out which of the 8 ozone styles would suit my purpose best?. luv istt
  17. in what thoery? most aerodynamic theory states the bigger wing is more efficient and faster, sure small kites seem fast but i have many times flown a 2.5 and 10 m kite in paralell conditions and the larger one does indeed seem to fly in straght passes faster naturally. The smaller kite buy the scale of things seems to to fly fast but back to back testing has revealed the oppisite. This doesn't address the Apparent wind situation but that is a different kettle of lesbians, any kite used will suffer from apparent wind and this effect affects both wings, maybe in the same way, there are 2 styles of speed sailing attempts- bathtube and spinaker in 50 knots or skip on top with fulcrum, foils and balance that can yield results in lower cleaner wind - both styles have yielded results which are only maybe 2 knots apart. For the background the kite that was propeling me on the 93-96 km runs was a 10 m quad foil in 20-25 knots etimate maybe more. My style was drop the kite and hang the f+@k on, was having to exert a large amount of downforce on my lines just to keep from flipping and the upwind buggy wheel was just idling, touching down every now and then to keep up appearances. As stated before think the smaller kite approach is safer, as the buggy was more like a hovercraft at times, had a very large runnoff area so was medium safe but high in the pucker factor all the same. I still have a sneaking suspicion that a bigger kite may have potential for higher speed as long as direction is not specific. luv istt
  18. Haven't read all the times but have been at high speeds, probably over 100 a few times but hard to do, have done 92-96kmh runs with burst of speed after that, but that was calibrated ( with gps) bike speedo that crapped out from salt water enema shortley there after. Have done +55mph on a dry lake bed-outrun the pace car These runs were done with big kites on a broad reach ie overpowered with a lot of runoff area and mostly on 2 wheels, Nigel's finesse is probably a better idea My question is, does my bfi (brute force and ingnorance) approach, rather than the finesse of Nigel with a smaller efficient kite win ? Big kites can go quite fast and superior firepower has often conquered, will report back soon, I have a new weapon that may propel me to great heights in these stakes. luv istt
