Am I doing something really simple really wrong?

So... out to Hunstanton again today, nice wind speed, got to go buggying again... but still a small problem. I can go one way no problems, making long distance safari to Brancaster no problem, but i'm getting slightly miffed with walking my buggy back with my tail between my legs to get back to where I started!

What am I doing wrong? Is it something as simple as facing the wrong way? I've read the buggying guide in the flexifoil book, but it doesn't seem to make much sense. I'm thinking it could be as simple as me facing the wrong way.

Anybody got any tips or absolutely foolproof "how-to" guides to buggying out there as It wouldn't half be more fun to go back the way I came

Cheers people

I am guessing that the wind was not blowing 90 degrees to the beach (either on shore or off shore).

If for example the winds is blowing at 45 dgrees to the beach then you will fly downwind ok (you will go with the direction of the wind) but when you turn to come back you are probably riding at the same angle as the beach (like the wind was blowing straight on shore) when in effect the wind is blowing towards you so you are trying to fly into the wind.

Best thing to do is when you first get on the beach check which wat the wind is blowing, you can now work out which angle the wind is coming onto the beach. So if it is hitting the beach at 45 degrees to the beach onshore then your up wind run will mean you have to fly at a 45 degree angle from the waterline to the top of the beach then turn and run at 45 dgrees to the wind back to the water line, so in effect doing it that way you are keeping the wind at 90 degrees to the kite.

Don't forget that if the beach has a bend in it then your angle to which you fly to the winds will also change.

I hope that makes sense???

so the wind was going "across" the beach, not from the land or from the sea but across. so i should be sort of "zig zagging" up and down the beach? (thank you btw)

Yep.You should be buggying with the wind coming at you from the side.

You can go upwind to a certain extent but not directly into the wind.:)

the first thing who are doing wrong is buggying from hunny to branny

this was the thing to do a few years ago (very nice to) but now the powers that be

have said NO !!!! because we scare the birds??? so if you dont want to **** the guys n gals at branny who have fought to stay at branny please buggy at hunny OR branny

not in between thanks

PS.

you can walk taking your dog ,large cat, bird of prey JCB 360 LAND ROVER TV CREW

THE TIME TEAM to dig up some bits of wood and then return 8 months later to put it back??? but another story!

Christ almighty, get off you high horses folks!

Read the thread again you might get the sarcastic nature of it... I can barely get 150m down the beach, let alone buggy to six miles along it. I've lived in Norfolk a great deal of my life and I'm not about to tear through a nature reserve in the name of fun.

Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to go to Brancaster, when I don't **** off others there. I thought the community was supposed to be quite supportive? Maybe not.

Ride safely

I've read it again, and you still sound like a ****, and all the other advice sounds really supportive. I suggest YOU read it again and see if it might not be better for your image to just delete the thread.........

lol

i think that this is just a misinterpretation with regard to you lot having a go at him, and should maybe apologise.. cos if you believe that he could buggy 6 miles round to branny and he cant do simple zig zag then maybe u need to learn ur ABC and 123 again:p lol....

and dude, dont say things like that that people are sensetive about, even if it is light heartedly, cos some people are rightly very deffensive over their buggying rights which you would endanger if you buggied from hunny to branny....

NOT having a go at anyone lads and nt offending, just dont want people falling out about sumthing like that :D

cheers lads

take care

fly safe

and NOT round to branny!

no real offence meant, i just found the above posts a little abrupt/patronising. i have always treated more experienced kiters with the upmost of respect, if anyone's ever seen me trawl for half a mile down hunstanton beach with half a ton of equipment on my back just so i don't get in anyone's way would vouch for. However, i won't delete the post as i think other's responses are a great way to judge someone's character. To re-iterate my TWO replies above, thanks to everyone for the help.

dude, not having a go at u either mate, the only reason why beginners lyk myself, and yourself sometimes p1ss off others is because of the odd few experienced kiters that dont go and tlk to newbies and help them etc..

maybe if everyone helped others then there would be no need for us newbies to feel patronised and outkasted by other buggiers of a higher standard....

NOTICE TO ALL

i know personally there are a lotta friendly people out there who give advice and help others, but sometimes it lacks and thats when it matters most...

iv had great help from people before and im nt moaning but i have heard from other people that some buggiers see a problem with someones technique. or kit and leave it...

take care the lotta ya...:D

Hmm I would suggest that you stick to the section of beach at hunstanton... or bran...... Going between the two is one big nono..... The beaches between are protected by bird reservations, They don't take kindly to us in that area.... The trouble that some of us are having to goto to keep the beaches open round here bran especially..... We don't need for them to have a reason to ban us..... Also please make sure that you have BBC insurance...

Many Thanks

Jon,

This may not be terribly helpful but I have been having exactly the same problem. The answer, I discovered last week, was that I was not flying across the wind. It's really easy to end up bombing downwind at enormous velocity but then you can't get back.

Try marking a shortish run across the wind (couple of sticks 200 metres apart) and then aim for your marks. I found this really useful. Also taught me how to turn - plan it before you do it!

I'm a complete buggy newby so I would be interested to hear how you get on.

OK thwn but the best thing that you could do at the mo is be wit other buggyers.... Watchin is the best way to learn.... apart from paying £25 per hour.... LOL.... I've done the buggying on my own don't work......

This is the best advice by far, you'll learn more in an hour flying with others than a couple of days on your own. Wouldn't worry about making a fool of yourself we all started at one time.

You'll see directions that you can and can't go in relation to the wind direction and get the feel for it quickly. As you start and pick up speed its all too easy to head off downwind and if you've only just started will find it hard to beat back upwind to your starting point!

Have fun its one of the best bits the steep learning curve at the start but you'll get it quickly :D

Most people I have seen struggling have been due to being underpowered. There is nothing more difficult than trying to find the right line in the wind and having to work the hell out of the kite to keep moving. Make sure your well powered up, ride on the brakes if you have to. It just makes comming upwind so much easier with enough power as you can just lock the kite and find a good line. Stick with it, it will all come together and youll be thinking what a fool you were for struggling to get it right.....after that it will be a piece of pish:D

If all else fails, follow another buggiers tracks and stay on the same tack as it....works a treat and has helped many beginners

I had a 2 hour lesson with Rob several months ago, never looked back, saved me hours, learning on my own was becoming very painful & frustrating, now I just cant get enough of this scary sport.
