andy666 Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 I don't know why, but this morning I woke up thinking about playing Lemmings. You know, the old platform game where some little dudes followed each other into destruction, unless you could dig them a new tunnel or build a bridge to safety. Well it got to midday and I still had Lemmings on the brain so there was only one thing for it, I downloaded a DOS emulator and the old school VGA version of the game in the hope that it would ease my Lemmings brain. The game is harder then I remember (or I'm just older) and difficult to play in a window thats only 1/8th of a laptop screen, but atleast I might be able to sleep tonight without dreaming about that classic old game....... however I now have the annoying soundtrack stuck in my head Now that I have the DOS emulator though, what other classic games should I be checking out? I can only remember a few of them, as I was still young when they were popular? Quote
BobM Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 There is a lemmings for windows these days. I used to enjoy the old text-based adventure games Adventure aka Collosal Cave Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy Beauracy etc Then there's the Sierra games King's quest i-vi Space quest i-iv Leisure Suit Larry i-iii, v-vi Police quest i-iv The Lucas Arts Games Monkey Island Day of the tentacle Sam & Max hit the road Grim Fandango Indiana Jones i-iv And the ultimate in DOS games - Zork Zero! You had to get me started Quote
bakersdozen Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 haha old DOS games - classic! Check if there is a "fullscreen" command on the emu. Should help with only having that small window to view on. I think Maniac Mansion was my fav DOS game Quote
bakersdozen Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 Now that I think about it, i think you could play Maniac Mansion from within Day of the Tentical. Was thinking of Space Quest the other day for some reason too haha and yes, those cheesy soundtracks can really get stuck in your brain. mmm chiptunes Quote
andy666 Posted September 9, 2012 Author Report Posted September 9, 2012 I used to enjoy the old text-based adventure games That sounds like like it requires thinking, which is dangerously close to learning. I ain't falling for that one. No full screen option in the emulator. It literally just opens a command line window that will run these old programs. the best I can do is turn the laptop screen res. down so that the window is then about 1/4 the screen. Quote
jhn.holgate Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 I seem to remember spending a lot of time playing 'Snipes' and 'Elite". I think Snipes was something like Pacman and Elite was some sort of spaceship warfare type of game. Perhaps I should google them..... And Battle Chess was great fun but I think that was on the Amiga 500.... edit: some good info on Snipes here: http://www.textmodegames.com/download/snipes.html Quote
Bones Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Rescue Rover I recall playing lemming recently without using an emulator. Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Ah Larry and the Lounge Lizzards, that brings back memories. Here's another one, it's shoot em' up one, Duke Em Nuke Em. Pretty easy to figure out how to play it and some fun as well. Don't need a manual or the etternal patiences of a 9 year old. I have it a floppy disks, but now have no PC with a floppy drive. Oh and not to forget Bushido, good for karate kicking stuff. Quote

Increase the font size in the window and the window size will increase Quote
Bones Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Increase the font size in the window and the window size will increase You can increase the size of the cmd window, which may give you more room. Right click on the header bar, select properties Select the layout tab Increase the screen buffer and window size Quote

Slartibartfast Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy The BBC revamped H2G2 recently and ran a "Hitchhiker Adventure Game Picture Competition" where fans sent in artworks for each scene to be used in the game. The result was a pretty faithful rendition of the original. It's worth checking out if you have a little time to kill: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/game.shtml Quote
Slartibartfast Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 No full screen option in the emulator. I don't mean to tell you how to suck eggs, but did you try 'Alt +Enter'? If your still struggling download DosBox. It's really good, and definitely does full screen. And for those interested, CCS64 is a good emulator for the Commodore 64. Quote
zahra Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Was watching the action flick Battleship, ...reminded me that i had that game on DOS in the olden days... I sucked at it bg time Z Quote
