chappy Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 All welcome: Sunday Feb 17 Many of us have set the 17th aside as the Freestyles backup day so assuming the comp occurs this weekend, we'll do a downwinder for the fun of it. 10 mins from Strathalbyn, Milang has always been overlooked as Boggy is so close but with little water in Boggy, I've seen the number of kiters steadily increase this summer at Milang. Flat water, SE seabreezes, no real tides, no real waves, no big 'fish' and heaps of room for rigs makes Milang an attracive option. Plus chest deep water makes it easier for those who are not yet staying upwind. We'll meet at the Milang carpark down by the water/jetty at 1pm and take a few cars down to Point Sturt and come back across the lake to Milang (about 12kms). I'll have a chat to the Regatta Club down there about some dinner after, but the pub serves a cracking feed as well. Hope to see you there. Cheers Chappy Quote
chappy Posted February 11, 2008 Author Report Posted February 11, 2008 Hi all, Looks like there could be a couple of people heading down to Milang on Saturday and swagging it as it's generally still ridable when there's no wind in town if you're keen. I'll be down that night. Also a few aren't sure where Milang is... It's on Lake Alexandrina about 50mins from the Toll Gate. Basically, you need to get to Strathalbyn either via Mt Barker on the SE Freeway or through Meadows. Head out the SE corner of Strath towards Langhorne Creek and about 5kms out is the turnoff for Milang. Alternatively head towards Goolwa and turn left at Finniss. On the Milang main drag is the Pub and down below it is the Caravan Pk and the main Carpark. We'll meet there at 1pm on Sunday. All skill levels are welcome as even those body dragging can practice in the shallows heading downwind from Milang. Those in control of their boards can drive upwind and go down from Point Sturt. I'll confirm wind conditions on Friday but its almost always rideable down there. We'll fire up the barbie after for some dinner depending on who's keen. Cheers Chappy Quote
MilesMan Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Chappy is this a definite go ahead for this weekend ? How far is Sturt to Milang ? Quote
chappy Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 UNFORTUNATELY THE NORTHERLY WIND IS LIKELY TO HOLD OUT THE SEABREEZE ON SUNDAY, THEREFORE THE DOWNWINDER IS POSTPONED FOR 2-3 WEEKS. However, if you are keen to check out the spot, Saturday looks like it'll be SE 20 knots down there. Metro coast is also looking good. We'll let you know shortly when we'll reschudule it for. Apologies for any inconvenience but that's the wind..... Cheers Chappy Quote
chappy Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 Downwinder is 12kms which is like the Henley to Semaphore downwinders that are the usual run... We'll do it at some stage in the next few weeks. Cheers Quote
chappy Posted February 20, 2008 Author Report Posted February 20, 2008 Hi all, The Pt Sturt to Milang Downwinder is now going to be held on Saturday the 1st of March. Being a Saturday it'll no doubt kick on so the Regatta Club has offered their clubrooms and bar for us to have dinner after plus crash upstairs in swags for those who are keen (probably sleeps about 20); $20 per head for 2 courses and a place to sleep seems pretty reasonable. You can also stay in the Caravan Park or at the Milang motel if you want something better. Let me know if you are keen as we need to confirm dinner numbers by Wednesday next week. The lads who hung around last Saturday got an awesome session in for a few hours, hopefully we'll get some similar wind. We'll still make it a 1pm meet at the Milang carpark as the breeze usually comes in earlier. See you then. Cheers Chappy Quote
chappy Posted February 27, 2008 Author Report Posted February 27, 2008 Saturday is looking the goods for the Downwinder. Should be awesome. Pt Sturt to Milang; First time it's been done (with kites) as far as we can gather. 1pm at the Milang carpark. Hang around for dinner & drinks at the club after. Everyone welcome. Better accommodation available if you want to bring the family down. Give me a call on 0411 454 656 if you want more details. Catch you there at 1pm. Cheers, Chappy Quote
jedishane Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Hey guys, just wondering how the Downwinder went from Pt Sturt to Milang? Being a off the beach sailer i have sailed the Goolwa to Miliang race allot, unfortunately this was canceled this year to there being not enough water in the river. If the downwinder was a success would be good to make it an annual event. cheers Shane Quote
