Landslide Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 Sweet wheels. Making the hubs was a bitch. About 3 hours machining per wheel. andy666, jhn.holgate, .Joel and 9 others 12 Quote

socommk233 Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 Look like suzuki wheels. What machining was needed? I assume to fit 20mm bolts. Quote
Landslide Posted August 15, 2016 Author Report Posted August 15, 2016 I cut the original centres out and we fit a set of cup and cones. A couple of us run from Louth to Bourke along the river road. We found that the bearing rattle from the corrugations kills the wheels. This seems to have fixed it. An expensive way around, but it means we carry less buggy spares and more cans of stupidity for the evening. Ill bash up a drawing at work and post it, so everyone can get a crack at it. Means you are relying on bearing surface not bolt tension andy666 1 Quote
Landslide Posted August 18, 2016 Author Report Posted August 18, 2016 Right, here goes. Basically same as your wheel bearings on your car. To add strength to the axle and to stop the bolt chafing the thread, ensure shims are pulled in hard. Simply use a crush tool or some solder to create the primary crush when setting preload on the bearings. Measure the crush thickness, and that is the amount of shim to be added. The wheel should rotate freely, with a slight tension. Spin the wheel by hand, and it will roll to a gentle stop. This may take several re-tensions as the bearings will need to bed (same as a car etc) PreLoad Hub.pdf andy666 1 Quote
Chook Posted August 18, 2016 Report Posted August 18, 2016 Nice setup there @Landslide. Are there oil seals on the outer cones? Quote
Landslide Posted August 18, 2016 Author Report Posted August 18, 2016 Yea, Good ol' WB Holden hub seals. Been running grease, but could run oil if ya want. Easier to pull apart and repack with grease on side of road. Chook 1 Quote
andy666 Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Nice work. The hubs will out last the buggy Quote
