Slartibartfast Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 So $360. Yeah, I guess that is a significant saving. I looked into the possibility of building my own first bug and all things considered it didn't look like I was going to save anything really. I guess if you have all the steal and bolds and things lying around already then well, looks like it is worth it. Did you just use steel bolts or shell out for stainless? Quote
stephen crouch Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 steel bolts are good if u will be dismantling it for transport as ss bolts will (ball up) and will need to br cut off with a grinder so ms bolts are the way to go ps nylock nuts are a must as well ok ss bolts are good (will not rust) as long as u use the right grade! Slartibartfast Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Fair enough. When I was looking into it I got about as far as looking up stainless steel bolts and it was all getting so expensive I just went and bought a second hand PL buggy. Quote
jhn.holgate Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 A little blue dune buggy! Looking forward to seeing it zipping along at Sandy Point. Good job. Quote

Through work, we get a trade discount of 70% off list price and they are still making money on it It's lucky though as it's not uncommon for us to get bolts that have a list price of well over $100 each. Chook Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Very nice work on the buggy!!! Fasteners, bolts are way too overpriced but I guess with just selling a few here and there there are a few overheads. When I do the odd mine shut we use bolts that are $135 each, to fasten the 50mm or 75mm thick, swedish quenched wear plates into position. They are fitted through 32mm holes and done up from the head side (they have no external thread, a flushed head and without needind a nut on the back of the mounting plate) to 600 ft/pounds. Tricky bits of gear as they can also be removed from the head side to replace the worn plate. This is fantastic if you cant get access to the back side. You don't need too. Thats why the guy that developed them and manufactures them here locally has a world patent on them. I have one here, I'll try and find it and take a photo of for you. These bolts can also be gas filled and have sensors fitted into them so that when hard wired/ linked to a computer it will monitor the wear rates while they are still operating. Saves time, as there are no shutdows to check for wear or damage. I've high jacked your fantastic build, sorry bout that. Chook Quote
