jhn.holgate
Anyone doing this? I've made up a picavet mount for the GoPro which will take photos every 2,5,10,30 seconds but haven't managed to use it yet. I have had the gopro under the wing of a motor glider with some success, but of course every time I bank/turn it, I get shots of the neighbors paddock. Of which I have A LOT. But it seems a bit hit and miss. I like the idea of putting a kite up, attaching camera and then letting out the line to position the camera in the right spot. Found a good vid: Edited June 20, 2015 by jhn.holgate
nigel
Known as K.A.P. John, there are plenty of people who do this. Some of the more dedicated make up full RC mounts with live video feed so you can see what your aiming at. More common at kite festers, due to the amount of colour in the air, and single liners tend not to move around to much. Some thing I'd like to do, but I do like the idea of a full video display for perfect framing with a high res camera. Stability is the biggest issue that these photographer tend to have. sluggo
Great video John ... Wish I was that clever at tinkering
jhn.holgate
Was thinking about how I would anchor a single line kite while I attach camera/mount/laundry etc and also how I would anchor the kite if the wind came up and I had to walk it down. Came up with this - should be able to attach it to a fence post (larks head some webbing) or clip it to a wire or attach it to my harness or a stake. Should work ok in theory....... jhn.holgate
And it worked! Here's some of the 115 photos from my first effort! Now I need to find a 28mm or wider compact digital camera that can take photos every 5 seconds or so automatically. Or a real good remote switch - probably not gonna get the remote on a sub $200 digital though.....
JKS
Thats really cool John You need to get some reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy long line !
jhn.holgate
Long line is on the way As are, of course, more kites...... I broke the main spar in the one pictured (it was a 25 year old bit of dowell). Fortunately, my wife had some 6ft bamboo garden stakes in the shed. It was a bit heavy on one side but it didn't crash. SoutherlyBuster
Neat John. Hmm I would have thought the go pros had a button to take pics at a user speficied interval. When all these water cam threads started some one mentioned the pentax, from memory this has such a function and the cam is water tight and the prices was pretty good too. I am looking forward to the Kingston SE Beach (did I spell it right this time ? ) pics ..... hint hint. Norman.
jhn.holgate
Yes, I'm looking forward to taking some aerial shots at Knengston too. I'll pack everything! The GoPro can shoot at 2,5,10 and maybe 30 second intervals but there's a good deal of distortion with the wide lens and a bit of chromatic aberration too (which is odd 'cos the HD video footage is stunning) - not as good as a dedicated camera. I'll check out Pentax's site. Cheers
jhn.holgate
Experimenting with camera angles - I think it's a better result when the camera isn't facing straight down... also, the gopro does much better with a bit more light. Mick14
Most of my shots are coastal - its hard to get nice wind inland. Got some good conditions across the road from home today...

jhn.holgate
Very nice indeed. Time I pulled the camera out and did a few more myself. What camera are you using, Mick?
ozzymat
Hi Be playing around with a small HD video camera from Hobbyking, its less than 30gram with the battery and saves the avi file straight to a onboard microSd card. The video is 1280x720 which you can set to record manually or on motion, it will also take still photos manually or motion sensing. All for $40.00 Heres some videos I put on youtube the quality is a bit reduce from the conversion process. From a 2.4 Metre 2 line stunt kite. From a Rev 1.5 SLE Cheers Mat Port Augusta
Mick14
My KAP camera is a Pentax Optio W90... Waterproof, shockproof, fully internal lense, 12 Megapixels, and best of all, any number of multiple still frames at any interval.

MadNicko
Check out Chris Henderson's work. Don't have the link to any of his photos on hand but this is one to an interview he did about it: http://www.mawsons-huts.org.au/cms/2010/01/qa-with-dr-chris-henderson-kite-aerial-photography/. He's built a stereoscopic rig and a remote controlled single camera rig for photography down in Antarctica.

Goz
Nice Photos Mick Have you got any photos of your camera rig? Do you have to manually adjust where the camera is pointing or have you got it set up with remote pan and tilt?
