sorry to be a bit late to the party here, but ive just read through it all, i think its about time we started thinking about things in the real world,
i co run BournemouthBoarding and i fully understand the issues of the club in trying to keep the spot open for kiters, we do a lot of work in the Christchurch harbour spot trying to do the same, meetings with the council, advising locals on danger areas, tides, nature reserves etc etc, i think its important for clubs to be set up to protect spots, but you have to involve everyone in the club, BournemouthBoarding has a full website with online forum, so anyone can come online and discuss issues with other kiters and us admin, we do exactly the same job, we are BKSA recognised and provide all the info u need about the areas we cover on our site, we also have an option for people to become members for £5 a year, this is only optional for people, and if they do, we have worked with online shops and places such as the ski centre at Matchams, to provide discount to our members to give them something in return, it is after all a non profit club,
now getting back to the real world, as far as i can work out there is no dedicated website for the hurst club, just an email adress which u contact, send £50 and get 2 cheap rashvests in return, and this allows u to fly at the spot, lets not forget that this is a public area! by setting up a club like this, you take on the responsibilty of protecting the area, but you cannot pretect it by making people pay a lot of money to use a public area, the approach should be to inform people of the issues in the area, do this by either posting signs at the place marking out prefered area to kite, or by a detailed website, its not an issue that one man can solve, you have to make people aware then trust that they are decent enough not to cause trouble, all kiters are united and dont want anywhere to be shut down, so they respect the areas they kite in, of course there will always be odd one who pushes the boundaries, but im affraid you get that with any sport or situation like this, and by setting up expensive demands and telling people they cant kite there, will just piss people off and there more likely to fly somewhere they shouldnt because they havent had access to basic info about the area,
obviously its a small area and the number of people out there at once is another issue, but thats just the way it goes,
what u need to do is set up a club properly avising the issues with the area, and get people on your side, not argueing about pointless regulations which mean fuck all in a public area, there is no regulation or law, about the rash vests or only 6 people at once etc, just a request from someone behind an email adress,
this needs to be rethought and treated as a club for the people that use the area, let everyone work together and see the issues about areas not to kite and what to do to keep it open, let people teach other about the area and promote a good website, and at the end of the day, keep people happy and respecting the area, as soon as u bring money into it, u annoy people and create needless debates like this thread, this can be easily solved with a bit more thought and planning, and will create a much more friendly, and ultimately safer kiting location,
