grogamanda Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Hi all, Off to airlie beach on Tuesday. I am considering taking a drive to bowen as well while I am there but the winds look atrocious. I thought bowen was always windy! Any thoughts or is it just the windfinder thing. Any suggestions in and around bowen would be gratefully received. Cheers Richard Quote
JKS Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Front beach is good for pretty much anything with a southerly in it .... find yourself Darylmple Street ... on a low tide you can drive down the boat ramp and unpack from there (DON'T drive out onto the sand) Then if it has east in it you wana hit Rose Bay (Beautiful beach) ... find Rose bay Road then park at the end of Bluewater Parade. anything with a north in it .... Queens Beach or Jasso point ... get yourself onto Queens Beach Esplanade. If you need any other info let me know Grog .... Marty Jealous Quote
grogamanda Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 cheers marty. Unfortunately it looks like the winds are going to be fairly useless next week. In any direction. Ho hum. hopefully I can find something a little better. R Quote
Peter Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 if you are heading to Airlie Beach, the closest two beaches are Conway Beach and Midge Point beach. both ate off the highway, or main drag, on the way up. both conway and midge prefer easterly winds, conwy for the southern side of east, and midge for the northern. midge point has to be the pick of the two local beaches. the bowen beaches are great, when there is wind, the pick would have to be yasso point at the northern end of queens beach. plenty of acconadation in bowen as the town is dead of human life. most of the kiters (water) around airlie beach go to bowen to fly as the water tends to be deeper and less choppy than the shallow beaches of conway and midge. yes wind looks like being crap, still, if you'd like to get in touch while here send me a PM and we could arrange a meet up. I live in Proserpine, on the highway where you turn off to Airlie Beach. there are two other XK flyers up here at the moment, but i'm sure they are just as frustrated as i am with the wind of late. when will you be here? enjoy your time in the whitsundays. JKS Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Hey Grog Read your reply the other day then forgot all about replying ... lol Fingers crossed you get some breeze ... The clan and I went up 2 x-masses ago and all but vaporized the wind The reef is WELL worth your time or any of the islands, even just absorbing the slower pace of small towns that are 'Dead of life" is sweet enough. A sniff around Conway is a top way to burn a day too Marty Quote
mkzo7 Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Hi, going to Whitsundays for 2 wks holidays. Can you recommend any beach there I can teach my son to kitesurf? I need shallow water, ideally no chop. Cheers, Marcin Quote
Peter Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 best is midge point, that is, closest to airlie beach and proserpine. heading from mackay turn right at bloomsbury, follow to the end of the road and you are there. or from the north, turn left at the Laguna Quays sign, 20mins south or proserpine, follow the road to the end, turn left, follow and stop before you are on the sand. caravan park, and a pub. locals prefer midge for kitesurfing as the wind is cleaner, the water is deaper, and there is a very nice gutter close in that provides smooth water. its my kitesurf pick of the whitsundays southern area. mkzo7 Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Thanks for info, hope there's some wind around there soon. Cheers, Marcin Quote
mkzo7 Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 btw how deep is in midge point? Cheers, Marcin Quote
Peter Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 depends on the tide, if its not deep enough for you just wait an hour or two. Quote

grogamanda Posted July 7, 2009 Author Report Posted July 7, 2009 unfortunately all kiting was off for the holiday due to health issues. Wife and daughter ill with flu. me pulled three internal staples out after recent surgery and my son had a cold. I lugged all my kit up there for nothing! Ah well, you could have guaranteed if I hadnt bought it there would have been great winds and no illness. Actually at home now. Hospital tomorrow to get shouted at by surgeon. Seeya soon! grog Quote
koma Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 Damn Grog! That's not good to hear. Hope the surgeon can fix you up quickly, then you've got a good couple of months through winter to rest up and heal before Speed Week in November. Quote
