This is for the person with the Peter Lynn at Lytham today who I had a discussion with. This is what the BKSA say on rights of way. Please check points 2 and 4 (as you was upwind of me)

Rights of way

· The rider on the port tack gives way the rider on starboard tack.

· The upwind rider gives way to the downwind rider.

· The overtaking rider keeps clear.

· The rider leaving the beach has right of way over a rider riding into the beach.

· Before jumping check behind and downwind of you – maintain a safe distance, erring on the side of caution.

Upwind kite up, downwind kite down ... The easiest and simplest rule and one that makes perfect sense and is so easy to follow ...

Only time my local has issues with people bumping into each other or coming close is when changing tack and heading back, sometimes people don't check before popping the kite up and diving it back ...

I used to do this alot when on the water forgetting to check who's behind me, being quite new to the water scene not wanting to go too far out and some blonker behind me can see me looking behind just carries on riding stopping me taking my kite to the zenith, taking me out of my comfort zone carrying on my line further out to sea until the kiter behind decides to change direction or i head down wind enough to miss them.

Used to piss off big time, and the amount of flipping times it happens grr.

If the guy was new give him a break eh its not like these rules are written everywhere?

And someone who doesn't fly regular amongst crowds can be very overwhelming and something that takes getting used too

I operate the "dude shredding the wave has right of way rule" he's obviously ripping up a sweet wave. i'll get out of the way so he can continue. then i'll hope that he can give me some slack when i'm tearing up the next wave.

I also operate the " get the hell out of the way of newbies rule". If you kiting real close to a guy whose learning and you get wrapped up in an out of control kite.... blame yourself for being too close to someone with less control.

You can forget the BKSA rules for the most part as they are just a repeat of the sailing rights of way and number first and foremost is that everyone has a duty to avoid a collision at all costs, weather you have priority or not.

Also re wave riding ripping or not the rider on a wave has priority. Too many numpties seem to forget this or just don't know.

This sort of thing is going to happen more and more as our limited spots get busier. Had a really frustrating day at Camber yesterday as everyone seems to use a different set of rules or just have no concept of right of way on the water whatsoever and plough through regardless. I find myself constantly dodging people or giving way when technically I should get priority, which means I spend so much time edging hard to regain lost ground I never make enough space for myself to even think about something like a nice big downwind boost. Particularly frustrating (as mentioned above) is people who won't even go so far as to raise or lower their kite to keep out of your way. If you add newbies, chip on shoulder windsurfers and increasing numbers of kite schools body dragging around into the mix it just ruins the whole experience. You know what - on balance I think I prefer the start and end of the season - might be cold, but at least you always get a good session!

I think I'm going to looking for a quieter spot for the summer months, mark my words somebody is going to have their head cheese wired off their shoulders by a kite line soon the way things are going.

Camber has gotten perticularly bad this season. The boys from the kitesurf centre do a really good job of teaching and keeping the classes up the beach away from everyone and out of the way. Now though there are so many schools run out of vans there who spread out along the entire beach its becoming an absolute nightmare (i counted 4 last time i was there). Its dangerous especially when its busy not only for the learners but also for the experienced guys as beginner kite flying is often slightly unpredictable!!! Why they cant teach upwind where the kitesurf centre does is beyond me.

According to an instructor I spoke to, there are kite teaching zones at both ends of the beach. I'm not 100% sure what the official stance is and whether that's correct or not (my impression was that instruction was only supposed to happen at the Western end beyond the flag) but yeah there are definitely lessons going on all the way along the zone at Jury's gap from a variety of different teaching companies. These guys have got to make a living I guess, it's just that unfortunately there's not space for everyone anymore :-(

I think it's a bit much when long standing Camber flyers are being edged out (in part) by the schools. I'm not local so it won't take all that much longer for me to drive somewhere further West, it must really annoy the people who live and fly in the area though.

Russ, know what you mean mate. I tend to do any big jumps / tricks nearer the beach so I don't have to spend have my session body dragging when I stack it but it was pretty difficult yesterday as every time I just about planned a jump there was kite school down wind somewhere. That being said, went out a bit further and did some big boosty jumps on my 10m when the wind was 30 knots or so......love it :-)

Almost crapped myself once when I looked down and realized how high I was......lol
