andy666 Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 From the flysurfer website. Matthias is in full preperation for his amazing Trans Mongolian Kite-Trike Tour, a 5000 kilometer journey through the countries; Russia, Mongolia and China, all powered by FLYSURFER kites VIRON & PEAK which drives Matthias’ trike bike! More information and other adventures can be found soon on his website: http://www.springpatt.de Looks pretty epic. Maybe a little optimistic to complete 100km per day through Mongolia. Quote
jhn.holgate Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 That is SO not going to be fun on the rough stuff. He definitely needs a Nasa Star! Quote
nigel Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 So is he to pedal when there's no wind?? Flying any kite one handed is a little risky, especially if you need one to steer the bike. If he sticks to major-ish roads then I can't see much use of the kites, and if he hits the back roads, then he's going to need some more suspension, and face cut up surfaces. The last shot on the video is evident of why a recumbent isn't designed for a kite. The front axle is too far from the tow point, so a short wheel base bent would be the best bet to get some stability for use with a kite. A long wheel base bent will have more room for his clothes, tent, etc., over the shorter wheel base. I can see short lines will be the better option here. Poles and wires are going to be risks with long lines. Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 Bikes are fine for kites, if you can lean against the pull like with dirt surfers. He's got no means of leaning against the pull. Longer wheel base and wider wheel base would be the go. I'd say he is going to get very sore wrists from steering the kite single handed, oh and then come the pot holes. I've cycled on some bad roads with pot holes and corrugations, it's very tough on the body (errr um your body). Quote
andy666 Posted June 8, 2014 Author Report Posted June 8, 2014 Mongolia only has 1200km of sealed roads and I'm sure that wouldnt be 1200km of smooth sealed roads. Has anyone seen the series "Long Way Round" and the extreme difficulties they had riding motocyles through Mongolia? I would say that this "kite trike" trip will end up being 95% pedaling and the kite comes out for a bit of fun or promotional shots. Quote
andy666 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Report Posted June 10, 2014 He needs the Gobi buggy. Needs more adjustment holes Quote
