I was told you could not fly kites in the rain by a "kite expert" however we ventured in heavy ish rain this weekend and had one hell of a fun sesh. 360, power slides were plentiful just wondered if anyone else gets out kiting in rain.

I've kited in the rain as well, with foils (light rain) and LEIs in heavier rain - drying both is a pain in the ass in a small room :(

One thing to keep in mind, especially this time of year would be lightening. Last thing you need is to be the highest thing for miles around and find yourself becoming a human lightening rod.

One other reason you may have been told not to fly in rain is the way the wind changes, and if it all goes tits up i'd imagine its fare worse than what would happen in dry weather.

This seems like the right place to ask this, seeing as there's talk about flying in the rain... How do l go about waterproofing a kite? Its a 9metre blade II so she's an old one. Could l just put nikwax on it?

Cheers

Phil.

a lot of kiters use something called glide and seal ( i think ). try looking for a thread on here, i'm sure there was even a thread were someone was trying to get people involved in a bulk purchase.

as for flying in the rain, i've done it a good few times. as long as its more of a passing summer shower then its all good by me, obviously as stated above dont do it in a thunder storm. definitely good fun on grass with a buggy though i can vouch for that. me and my mate also sessioned in heavy snowfall with some big ass flakes which was pretty amusing too. i think we lost all the video of that now but it did look quite epic.

Foils fill up with water and get heavy after a while and don't fly very well. Inflatables will fly in torrential rain. I've been flying in rain/wind so hard the rain hurt my face! You need a few extra knots of wind than normal to overcome the extra weight weight of the water.

I'll admit that most of my rain flying happens on the water. i'm already wet so who cares if its raining.

Rain/Wind comb is very cold so yourl need to be well dressed to stay warm.

rain/wind/night combo is even sillier. but i've had some silly fun times flying in 40 knot squalls in the middle of the night!....

Ah Yes! Thanks, I remember now, I saw that strange phenomena about 3 years ago in England.

Last frog I saw falling out of the sky over here was Laurent when OBE'ing. He pefers to be called a citizen of Bretagne instead of French.
