xtreme playboy Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Hi just wondered if anyone else has suffered from tennis elbow since flying kites , if so what have you done about it or have you managed to cure it ? Iam a brickie so you would think that i had good strength in my arms plus been kayaking wild water for more years than i care to mention so a little surprised , but hey them kites dont half pull! lol I fly using an Ozone turbo bar+ harness when poss to take the strain but not all my kites lend themselves to working on the bar . so handles order of the day with strop when poss. Quote
Zippy Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 You could attach a strop to your handles and then fly it captive with something like a Holt Allen Snatch Block and a Witchard quick release. This would take all the strain from your arms. But tennis elbow comes from continually repeated movements so may still not work. It will make your ache a whole lot less though. Quote
xtreme playboy Posted January 1, 2011 Author Report Posted January 1, 2011 cheers zippy think i have created a weak spot and its here to stay unless i give up ! Not likely, lovin it to much at mo lol but hey coming up to 49 so guess i got to expect a few aches and pains;-( ps a mate started at the same time got the same prob !Pair of old gits Quote
flydad Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 To be honest, a few years back I suffered from tennis elbow but mine came from knocking the elbow off of a door frame. I actually found the tension on the arms from the pull of the kite was beneficial in relieving the pain whilst flying. One thing I would recommend is wearing a clasp on the elbow. Epicondylitis Clasp I wore mine from when I awoke in the morning till i went to bed at night, and it's a slow recovery, mine took about 6 -8 months before I'd say it had healed. I basically wore the clasp throughout that time. Best of luck in your recovery! Quote
mick Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Sometimes these pains can be caused by different types of kites. Sounds crazy? I kid you not. I had agony flying Ozone Little Devils especially the 6 mtre. The pull in the buggy was more sideways. Changed to Blades with a more forward pull and pain was gone. Now I have arm pain but I've posted on KITESURFING so I won't repeat it here. Hope I can get some answers. Looking at that clamp seems to suggest it may help where I'm suffering. Quote
Dubs Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Dont know if this causes any problems, but when teaching I've noticed when people fly on handles they hold the power of the kite in their muscle (and elbows) instead of relaxing their muscles and letting the power go to the shoulders. Much easier! Maybe your not doing that? Quote
Kitebuggybagman Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 had that years ago, when i used to be able to get out 3 times a week. :-) found one of those elbow supports helped Quote
xtreme playboy Posted January 2, 2011 Author Report Posted January 2, 2011 thanks guys for all the advice/thoughts looks like i need to get a support as its not going to go away until i do and yeah looks like a slow process and dubstep i think you are correct must say i think i fly using the muscles and elbows have to switch to letting the shoulder take the strain , any tips on how to do this ? as i may have got into a bad habbit, i will try and relax , do you twist your body more when letting the shoulders take the strain ? And Mick you may have a point also mine started when i was using the Ozone flow 5 m but hey i only had a 3m b4 that so maybe just stepping up a size was enough and as you say the flow is more sideways than lift , but i do use the turbo bar on the flow now which eliminates the strain (on the elbows) so i best try all the advice, cheers guys Quote
Dubs Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Its easy to explain face to face lol, the key to being able to fly for long periods of time is relaxing.... Let the power of the kite hold your arms up, and when the power comes in lean back and relax your arms.... It looks more stylish and eliminates most of the strain on your arms. Making any more sense?? Quote
xtreme playboy Posted January 2, 2011 Author Report Posted January 2, 2011 yeah dub think i do a little of that but not enough i c what u r saying maybe if i flew a blade all the time my arms would be up all the time as if welcoming the wind gods thats the standard position for blade flyers is it not ? lol Quote
Hammer-n-saw Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I ad the same problem when using a depower bar. I switched to fixed bridles on handles and the problem went and have never had any problem since. That must have been at least over 5 years ago . (.edit.....and im a joiner since I left school several years ago, so I need my elbows ) Quote
77W Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 You could try a steroid injection, it helped me when I had a similar problem with my elbow, I had golfers elbow, aparently same thing as tennis elbow but with the movement in the oppisit direction, oh & a strange erge to ware odd trousers & shout out foooooooooour every now & then ( just joking about the last bit ) but a streroid enjection helped Quote
Bex Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 know how you feel thought i had rsi from driving using right my arm in lorry for the steering all time. doc said was tennis elbow told to use rub in nurofen stuff seems to work and use a power band (original not cop)y and dont know if its in the mind or what but it works for me!! Quote
Lee_m Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 I get it when i kite surf all day!! hurts like hell for a week!!! i also get bad wrists Quote
Hammer-n-saw Posted September 21, 2011 Report Posted September 21, 2011 How are your elbows doing ? I would like to go back to depower kites and bars but dont want to take the chance as my elbows did hurt a fair bit. I get to fly a depower occasionally with no problem but if I was using them all the time I think that the ache n pain will return. Another thought, is that the length of the bar might make a difference, I found that shorter bars put more strain on the elbows, and that a bar that kept your arms at a shoulder width was better rather than a shorter one that pulled your arms together. Also the distance away from your body that the bar is set at, ie arms too close and contantly bent, never straightened out properly when depowered wont help. Quote
Cafe.Racer Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 I started getting tennis elbow (I think) flying with a bar in a buggy. Now I turn my back hand palm up and hold the bar like that, and it works for me. It might be a different problem than landboarding, though. Quote
Hammer-n-saw Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 ^^^ You know, ive done that too and it doesnt seem as bad, and it works on a board as well. Quote
Stumpi Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 I've been suffering this this year, funny, not noticed it before. Or maybe just not focussed on it. Got chatting to Ice while down at Portland and got to discussing his tennis elbow and quartizone to try and cure it. Damn that, I'll stick with neurofen for the time being. Painful though, in an annoying toothache kind of fashion. Quote
CWB Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 ive been a brickie for a fair few years but recently had a steriod n cotazone injection in the elbow, 4 days later it felt like a new elbow no pain wot so ever, the after effects of the injection was real bad though, but would deff have it done again if nessesery Quote
Stumpi Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 Yeh, I like the idea of that but I've heard some real horror stories of the procedure. Ouch. Is it really that good after? Quote
CWB Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 b4 i had the injection i cudnt evan straighten mi arm out, summat to do wi tendons been damaged, 1 injectin witch was fine but 8 hrs later proper pain easing over 3-4 days but now wow, to tell u the truth i wish id had it done 4 years ago but i kept putting it off which made it worse but i would deffo recamend it, Quote
