Jerry Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Just wondering if any one uses or has used any of the mystic/ocean rodeo fitted drysuits? DO they work well, or are they less effective than a layered steamer? Quote
paulie_amoose Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Basically, you cant get warmer than a dry suit, make sure you layer it correctly with a good under fleese. You do lose a small amount flexibility though and they can feel a bit bulky. They make upwind body dragging a bit harder as well. Dont believe any of myths about them filling up with water and you sinking, that simply dont happen... Really good review here that kinda answers everything about them.. http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=51132 Quote
benbaron Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Ive got an OR pyro...its the dogs bud. Warm as when layered up, sweat like fuck though. only problem i have is with cold hands but then i always do. Quote
waterlogged Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Have had 3 dry suits: Ocean rodeo- Top quality suit, but all OR suits seem to be a strange fit -long arms but short legs! Replaced with: Typhoon- Used for 2 years, one leek which Typhoon fixed under guarantee no problem. Front zip very useful at half time Tee & Pee break:D Replaced with: Mystic- Suit is sound, plastic zip is is rubbish, popped open three times on water , now wont close at all. Tried to get sorted under guarantee but you have to do it via Emails which Mystic just don't answer. Gone back to my old Typhoon (which I kept as a spare), in its third year, need to put in new seals but then good to go for another year. Quote
firefighteralex Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 (edited) As said above they don't fill up with water and sink. They are really warm. The only issue we have at work with them is if you haven't expelled the air inside and fall into water head first you could end up with all the air trapped in the book end and that wanting to stay on the surface instead of your head end. In the fire service we wear extra large life jackets to stop this and right the wearer. Never seen it happen though. I personally don't use a drysuit in the winter. My sola 6.5.3. is plenty warm enough. I've used it in Jan/feb in force 8's windsurfing. The only downside is getting changed. Edited September 25, 2009 by firefighteralex Quote

Jerry Posted September 25, 2009 Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 yeah I know dry suit = wimps, but hey I get cold ( no fat layers deposited over many years to help insulte my youthful bones) anything that means i can kite all year round is good. Quote
C00KIE Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Got OR Pyro pro last year. Pro's You can stand around on a cold beach chatting with your mates and stay really warm Changing after session is much more pleasant You can find your willy straight after a long january session Con's Look like a dork Lack of movement and very bulky- Neck seals pretty uncomfortable You can't piss in it You are totally insulated from all the elements around you- personally one of the reasons I love kitesurfing is you are in tune with the elements. Bought my OR last year. Looking for a good winter wettie to use this year when its not absolutely freezing. Will prob use drysuit 25% of winter sessions. Judge for yourself! Quote

OceanRodeo Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Been in the Ocean Rodeo Pyro Pro all last winter and will be there again. Had wet suits /steamers and nothing beats a good drysuit. Only down side for me is no Pee zip Quote

samski Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 im a youngun but have like no body fat flying in NWs in the north sea so ive got the older OR surfer drysuit. might be a bit short in the legs this year though. i did have the blue pyro baggy suit from OR, that was also fine. you need to keep real good care of the zip. try to avoid solvents, throw some wax on it. i got a stick of this orange stuff that has lasted for ages and keeps the zip healthy. i reaaallly like the look of that NPX suit! too cool! having a hood and pockets to stick your hands in is a great idea the lack of a pee zip doesnt really bother me, dont need a pee while your having fun! im going to try and stay in my 5.3 from decathlon as long as possible this year but hands already getting a little cold side note, does anyone know when the winter collection comes into decathlon? i badly need some new boots.
