Chook Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Here's my attempt to have fun on those pesky no wind days. The power plant is a LPG powered, valve less pulse jet motor. Keeps all the dogs in the neighborhood at bay as well. (Would be good on the beach for you, Mr Holgate) The only one draw back is you're deaf in 20 seconds as it makes a HELL of a racket. Certainly not a summer machine as it emits a 4mtr exhaust flame and glows white hot. . You will notice the saftey officer with the small extinguisher in his right hand by the door. Seriously the one on the bug is petrol powered and valved. It consumes 900cc of petrol a minute. The one in the vice is LPG valve less and really sucks the gas but can be throttled up and down (about 80% of it's power range). Just thought you guys might need a giggle on a Monday. Cheers Chook Quote
Goz Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Just needs some wings stuck on it and you have a home made V1 chook Quote
BGKD Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 please tell us you will be coming to Yeppoon.... bring spare engines Quote
jhn.holgate Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 The only one draw back is you're deaf in 20 seconds as it makes a HELL of a racket. A good pair of earmuffs will fix that Certainly not a summer machine as it emits a 4mtr exhaust flame and glows white hot. . On the second run back along the beach, you simply stop to gather all the bbq'd rare hooded plovers. Shiskabob! You will notice the saftey officer with the small extinguisher in his right hand by the door. So the safety officer is not the guy standing over the jerry can with what looks like a box of matches in his hand? I'll be keeping a close watch on the 'for sale' thread as these babies become ready ps: I find using a hill works pretty well on days with no wind. Quote
jabroni Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I can spot a few potential safety concens there... Plastic seat protecting bum from motor, LPG tank resting on jewels, gas pipe around neck. You could pop down to the local servo for a swap-n-go when the tank's gettin light. Great stuff! Quote
Goz Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 What really concerns me is the lack of brakes Power sliding isn't really going to work with a rocket up your clacker pushing you forward. Quote
BGKD Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 brakes is for wimps... Cant help but think of this old story though http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1995-04.html (yes I know its a myth) Quote
poodel360 Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 nice jet engine i have been wanting to build one my self but i want to do it with a turbo as it sounds more like a jet !!!! Quote
Oooo Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 I always thought you where NUCKING FUTS !!! now it is proved and MRS CHOOK tis not!! my fault so stop throwing knives lol Quote
Chook Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 Cheers guys it was a fun barby with the boys. Neighbor hood has now returned to normal. Yes have to agree the ear muffs dull it, but it's like standing next to a top fuelled drag car. The noise goes through your skeleton. Love the toasted plovers idea that would catch on, I reckon. The turbo jet is still in the machining stage with the oil pump constructed. Have ran out of hours in the day. Well and truly on the back burner at the moment. There is a smaller pulse jet about 720mm long that we hope, is going to fly this winter. Its on a radio controlled plane. The fuel load is proving to be a weight problem. Wolfie you are totally safe now!! If she even gets the slightest whiff of LPG she whips the meat cleaver out and gives chase. I can't be too harsh it's 26 years of bliss?????? on Thursday. I'm not giving her up though, I've just got her trained. Trust you enjoyed my mirth, Chook Quote
Goz Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 You should mount a chook on a skewer behind the engine outlet and call your buggy the chook cooker, a quick run down the beach and a stop for a refuel and lunch. 26 years of marriage I would have thought it you who was nearly trained by now Quote
Andyfly Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Still laughing....nice work Chook.... 26.. ..your parole board vindictive too eh.... Congrats...best wishes for the next 26.... Andy... Quote
Denver1229 Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Chook, it will be a great day when we get the chance to meet in WA somewhere, sometime , testing the limits in all aspects and having a ball doing it by the looks. Evan Quote
nigel Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Love the pulse jet!!!! Get the idea from another mad Kiwi did we??? Next question: When's the turbo prop arriving?? I'd like contra-rotating blades thanks. Here doggy doggy. I like the idea of a pulse jet plane, but basing it on the German Me163 where it used the engine to climb, and then made it's attack run on little fuel, climb again, repeat, till fuel empty, glide home, would be good fun as a model plane. Just don't land like a Me163, they tended to blow up as the highly flamable fuels always left some unburnt in the tank and it mixed on impact with the ground (no wheels, just a skid to land on). The Me163 killed more Germans than it did allies. The two componants in the tank would also eat flesh should you get sprayed with the stuff. Quote
SoutherlyBuster Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Great thread Chook, just love that mischievous grin. Go Ausie spirit of mucking around building things in the shed. Regarding the previous comment, a miltary movie comes to mind, can't quite remember the title, but there was a soldier running through the formal ball with his rear on fire, a roll of paper set alight and clamped firmly between the checks I believe. I suppose a fire wall would be in order before turning this beauty on when strapped to the buggy with rider at the front with cleanched teeth and bare white knuckes. Norman. Quote
Oooo Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 all the best for thursday MR @ MRS CHOOK !! and im sorry mrs chook for you suffering but i'm glad there will be another 26 + years or more eh !!have an awesome day and will catch ya's I think a chook on a spit behind too would be good !!!! Chook Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Sorry I took a while to reply, we have an arsonist lighting fires here. Pretty fed up with getting called out to them. Electrical storms are starting a lot to the north of Esperance as well. This one burnt a lot of private property and narrowly missed 2 homes and sheds. Work is busy as well. It's a long weekend (Labour Day) here, so I'm taking it easy for a change. It's going to be just RC helis and kites. Well maybe just one Rum!! Get the idea from another mad Kiwi did we??? Yes it is true, your on the money Nigel, the design is from the land of the long white cloud. The model won't be scale, as the KISS method will be employed. The system is a bit fussy and needs clean undisturbed air, so above the fusey design will make it easier. 26.. ..your parole board vindictive too eh.... Love it!!!! That cracked me up Andyfly. Thanks for the best wishes, keep smilin' Chook Quote
jhn.holgate Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 fire at hicks road.JPG fire at hicks road.JPG (51.15 KiB) Viewed 11 times C'mon, tell the truth - that was two minutes after you did the buggy run with the pulse jet at full blast! Quote
zoetrope Posted March 5, 2010 Report Posted March 5, 2010 Brilliant engine - I've long wanted to own one. Are you making anymore, or was it just a windless day that produced it? Quote
Chook Posted March 6, 2010 Author Report Posted March 6, 2010 No won't be building. The valved jet uses 10 thou feeler strip valves and burns these out every minute or so. Not hard to replace but the novelty wears off. The construction is very time consuming and very hard on your health with mates bringing drinks. I built mine over a period of months, whenever I got some spare time. The valveless pulse jet was purchased by a mate from this link and took over 6 months to be delivered. It came from New Zealand. It runs like a charm, just keep the LPG up to it and it keeps glowing. To start them you need lots of compressed air or a leaf blower and a trembler box (out of a T model Ford) or similar, for the ignition to the spark plug. http://aardvark.co.nz/pjet/ This gives you a bit of an idea during the run, Just imagine the noise as deafening Chook Quote
Peter Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 holly crap batman, and you have a plastic seat back as protection???????? the seat will melt from under you wont it?? Quote
zoetrope Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Thanks for the info - it may be some time before I can convince the neighborhood that it is the public interest to have one. Quote
Chook Posted September 16, 2012 Author Report Posted September 16, 2012 Well things have progressed a bit more since I was at Yeppoon (and had a fat time) last Easter and showed the fellas my little Chinese valveless video. It's a real little honey and starts and runs really well on LPG and produces 5kgs of thrust, runs at 130 dB and fires at 1230 times a second. The white 20 litre container of water underneath is just to hold it down. It shakes all the tools off the wall of my shed, when run outside facing away from it. Well here is the next progression a 25 kg thrust Lockwood Hiller valveless that will run on liquid LPG. It's mounted on the back of my landyacht. (So Wolfie you can't say I'm a pole dancer about this rig there’s no mast. ) I hope to give it a run on Lake Lefroy in 12 days’ time. I fitted a heat shield today and just have some more to do to the fuel control system. It's just for a laugh and a bit of sunset entertainment. The 8.5kg bottle should give me 2 & 1/2 minutes of engine run at full throttle. Chook Quote
DJ_Sylk Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 Bugger the pissy 9kg tank Grab a couple of 20kg forklift bottles you need enough gas to get over to the old club house and back. Quote
Chook Posted September 16, 2012 Author Report Posted September 16, 2012 Yeh one of those would be perfect. I'll just have to keep dreaming. Catch ya soon at Lefroy. The new buggy is nearly ready. It's sitting on 26" discs at the rear and a 24" disc on the front, just waiting on some parts to finally finish the seat. Chook Quote
