  1. same The one day out of the 6 that I couldn't do!

    Thurso

Cheers for the info. Forecast has gone pretty nuclear! I'm looking for reef - but looks like this weekend won't be the best time to get to know these particular breaks. North Uist would be the plan - an area I know. Long drive from Southampton for a long weekend though!

    Thurso

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm looking for waves, not flatwater!

    Thurso

The charts for next weekend are looking pretty tasty. Whats the deal with kiting in Thurso? I know the surfing up there can be world class but which spots are kiteable?
  5. I am immensely jealous of your many many local spots. The main beach north of Sollas is one of my favourite kitesurf spots in the world!
  6. The beach is massive, but land kiting is only permitted in a very small area with often dubious sand conditions. There are some great lagoons for kitesurfing at midtide. Again, there is a zone for kitesurfing, but it is PLENTY big enough. The zoning at Brancaster is very important. You will be seen if you go out of the zones and you WILL piss off the locals, so please be aware of where you can go and where you can't. That said, I hope you have a banging session, it's a top beach, shame I don't live near it any more!
  7. Looks like team oracle were going slow, tbh!
  8. The Leganioux brothers invented both - and they are the original team behind Wipika I believe?
  9. Bit of a long shot but are there any Software Developers on here looking for a job? We are desperately trying to get new people at work! We are the market leaders in a very exciting industry with the capacity to touch billions (yes, billions) of people. For more details please PM. Languages: C++ required, DirectX desired Experience: Graduate level candidates welcome. Location: Hampshire Company: Small (12 developers at the moment) but growing rapidly. Hours: Flexible enough to allow for kitesurf sessions in the week!
  10. In choppy conditions, what is the 'ideal' tool for the job?
  11. Why would you want to landboard on a waterlogged, soft sand beach with massively oversized, really heavy tyres? I don't see the point.
  12. You're looking for a 5'10 - 6'1 shortboard, width about 19". Thruster or quad, doesn't matter for your first board, you will prefer one or the other, but only once you're properly hooked on surfboard riding. Lot of love for fish tails, but anything with a bit of width near the tail will be good. Don't get a North board unless you like overpaying for stuff!
  13. Strapless doesn't just add difficulty for the sake of it. It's a completely different experience without straps, I feel a lot more relaxed and just cruising around freeriding is a lot more fun, for me at least. I don't see how I could have fun on a strapped surfboard unless I was charging big waves in big winds (after a few years of riding I got bored of doing jumps and freestyle on a twintip, unless it was mirror flat or 30knts+), whereas strapless one can mess about doing tricks or slashing wind chop and still be learning and having fun. It's also a lot easier than surfing without a kite.... Anyway, where are you in the outer hebrides? There are some absolutely cracking wave spots up there!
  14. As far as I know only one person has ever been asked to stop buggying/boarding on brancaster beach by another kiter - he was charging around outside of the zone and when asked to stay in the zone got very aggressive. The only other rule is you can't have more than 5 kites up with wheels - but there are never that many people there, and even if there are, you would run out of usable sand within the zone first!
  15. You do need a supercomputer to crunch all that data (bare in mind it generates results globally and updates several times day....). Though the definition of supercomputer is vague. It could either be a small set of networked machines in his shed, or he could just get it done in the cloud (e.g. Amazon EC2). Either way, not hard at all.
  16. Just want to say that the only 100% depower safety is to release the kite - even a kite flagged out on a single line can create a hefty pull in a squall, when caught in a wave or when tangled with a deathlooping kite. This is the reason why mutiny and flexi chicken loops release completely - it is the only guaranteed way to completely separate the kite from your harness... anything that leaves a 5th line attached to your chicken loop attached to your harness will never release under load (see above). The "trigger" systems like airush's can also jam in some harness hooks - again this isn't safe. These issues were present on first generation Mutiny bar, but they are all fixed on 2012 bar. They also moved from the flexi style 4 line flag out to the much preferred single front line flag out with the 2012 kites.

    Tiree.

That's what I was trying to say!

    Tiree.

To be honest, sounds like you've got the anger problem?
  19. Tjah1087

    Tiree.

To all those reconsidering their trips to Tiree - it really is your loss. The kitesurfing is fantastic and the community very welcoming and friendly. The entire island economy has it's hands tied by the ferry prices - if the ferry is more expensive so are things on the island - they don't just magic everything there. But if the ferry company doesn't cover it's costs it will go under and the crucial lifeline to the mainland will be lost and the whole community will disappear. Islanders who have lived there for generations will either have to leave the island or turn to a very basic subsistence existence. Now put your comments about prices in context and try and understand Druncan's response - he and the rest of the islanders are facing the prospect of losing their entire way of life and you are quibbling because your holiday is a bit more expensive than last year. I thought he was fairly restrained, don't you? Would you rather your cash goes into the bottom line of a tour operators' balance sheet or to keeping a struggling UK community intact? I know which I would rather choose. That's even disregarding the fact that the kitesurfing is better anyway!

    Portsmouth

hayling, bracklesham and the witterings are close at hand too. Dont kite in any of the harbours - they'll have your nads off straight away.
  21. You sent him your privates in the mail?
  22. Every time you forget an apostrophe God tangles your lines. Fact.
  23. +1 for the Mutiny S-series, though they too only come in even sizes - 6,8,10,12.
  24. isnt that the same principle as is applied by the giant fins used on kitesurf raceboards
