If it's a Shimano hub they don't use caged bearings, a loose bearing may have escaped the cup and cone (if it's slack) and be falling around inside the hub. Is there any side to side play on the wheel?
It's not a difficult task to replace bearings but don't forget rear wheels have three sets of bearings - one inside the freehub which will require special tools to remove the cassette
lets hope the next 20 days is like that, coz that's how long I'm off work...
