I know you lot aren't big fans of the place but I love it theres planty of technical stuff, water and shity black sand. Got out on Sunday, the winds were very light a about 6 knots, but launched the Predator 7.3m and got plenty of runs in. Even cracked the 20km/h mark. No, Alan I was not pushing the buggy this time. The puddles on the beach were nice and warm and even got a touch of sun burn. Pulled some good two wheel tricks to impress the locals. Beach was busy but still loads of room and no hassles. Tides moving out to late afternoon by end of the week so may be going up again dependant on winds? Anyway enjoy wherever you are buggyng as long as you are. Quote

Aussiekiteflyer Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Good onya Mutty If you can use a big kite and really power-up, you will find that you will not sink in the stingray holes, speed is the answer & keep the front wheel out of the holes. We have had some wonderful days out there. You must keep your mouth shut too, saves digesting the algae. Although the algae may have disappeared now. We used to go over the other side still on the south side of the bridge (coming from south turn left at lights before Hornibrook bridge). The sand is a lot smoother but with ripples, again good at speed. We found this good in SW - NE. but it may have changed since our days. Above all have fun. Alan Quote
Mutty09 Posted August 3, 2009 Author Report Posted August 3, 2009 Thanks for the advice Alan, I never have encountered the algea at the beach and as for soft sand, I find it quite rare over the entire beach at low tide. I agree about the stingray holes though. I tend to stick the front wheel in as the back wheel hitting them tend to try and throw me out at high speed. I have also found due to its width and breadth it doesn't realy matter which way the wind is blowing there is plenty to go at unlike Bridie which is very narrow and very wind direction dependant. Again as always I will promote Sandgate and Brighton as it all runs into one and even as Sunsday on a SE wind I was able to run most of the beach from tip to tip. And as you know the lighter than air kite flies in anything. The only problem is after about 10 knots it is too big to hang on to, as stated it tried to pull me out on sunday, now that I've emptied all the sand out of her she's even better. Keep smiling even if you do have to eat the algea. Does that count as one of your 5 a day? Quote

JKS Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 Nosmo .... The sand is only wet, not soft ... so as long as you keep moving you will be right with the skinny barrows. Goggles are a very good idea as the sand/mud has a lot of fines (very small particles) in it compared to a normal beach and it can stay in the back your eyes for ages. As Alan says, be weary of the stingray holes if you are hitting any speed or turning. There's a few of us that have been undone by such a simple creature The larger puddles are awesome fun (in the summer) a lot of the time you can get a reasonably lengthy run and avoid getting wet or you can use them for cooling off or washing the buggy every 50 meters ... lol. Mutty09 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 Got a set of 8.5 inch rear wheels but never put them on the buggy for the beach, slows you down, stops you doing tricks and knackers the wheel bearings really quick. I ride on standard Flexifiol buggy wheels and I've never had a problem and I'm over 100.00 kgs so I ain't light. Stop making excuses and get out there and fly. If the wind is good I hope to be there tomorrow afternoon. Got a meeting at 1300 but hopfully will be done y 1430 so intend to be on th ebeach by about 1500. Please, please, please be some wind, even 10 knots is good enough. Quote

Once it gets to ESE or better yet SE it cleans up big time. You got high tide at about 11am as well so the afternoon will be the go .... mongrel combo mate (Too cold for this soft cock) Yer probably better off heading down to Murrarie buddy ... the wind will still be lumpy, but at least you wont be underwater Marty Quote

JKS Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 *Chuckle* ... seems I am the last one to take my own advice. The wind did swing ... and it was nice and stiff. I am guessing about 18 - 20 and oh so smooth, the coldness seemed to give it that 'little bit extra' as far as power in the kite but bugger me I got cold Had a bit of an epic at set up .... in my haste to launch I had a pulley snag and the kite launch into a loop (7m tube in 20k = ouch) so she got spat away and re rigged. Lucky I carry 2 bars otherwise I would have had to untangle the birds nest on the beach Simon, YUP ... it's messy every time but in the right wind direction it's totally worth the muck. It's definitely better here in the summer as your nut's don't shrink as much when you go through the water. Marty p.s. Did I mention the wind was SMOKIN ... how was it @ Murrarie Quote
trippnu Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 poped back down after i came home wind had picked up about 5 folds was a good blow only had an hour to spare before work took the board and the blade out would of definatly been 15 plus got lofted about 2 + meters in the air and yes was doing the running man in the air blade and gust arnt a good combo had the 4.5 gin with me not enought pull and the frenzy was back at the car to far to walk ashame the wind wasnt like it was at 11 when we got there good to see ya had a blast thanks once again for the loan of the mark 2 have a safe trip to the territory and ill see ya in cyber space (Mr Dundee) Simon Quote

Spent the week end getting the sand out of me kites too. As discussed on the phone dude let me know when you're back in town and I will definitely get out with you. Friday arvo was a good session even in the little breeze there was, the predator got me up to 30+. God I love that kite!!! Anyway glad you had a good un and harden up, been kiting when theres two foot of snow on the ground, an that does freeze your stones. Keep smiling (exceot on sandgate) and keep flying. I wouldn't mind doing a north straddie mission, but given the tide I think it'll be a waste of time. Is there any park better than Murrarie in a N ? Surely planes don't fly on the sacred ekka holiday, maybe we can do some high speed runs on the airstrip.... Quote

NNW is going to be lumpy regardless ... even over @ Straddie + if the wind is being pushed from the temperature of land it will probably weaken considerably by the time it hits Straddie (Opposite of an onshore wind) Either way ... good luck mate Bang that drum Marty Quote
