Noo Noo Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 It worked. First two layers glued and the board has some rocker. About 15mm or so, plenty for a skim board. Lots of flex at the moment, too much. I'm hoping the next layer will stiffen it up a bit Next layer also glued last night. Tried to force a teeny bit more rocker but I'm not expecting much. Shaping to come. Wish I had a camera . Everyone could see a disaster in progress
DjMoz Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Excellent NN I have plans for the next build already in mind! Weekend...Mark, as Colyn is insisting on going up to Wales to get the pick of the wind and empty beaches, it may be just us. Wind looks best Sunday AM, dropping throught the day, low tide at Hayling is 9am. I reckon an early dash down to Hayling is on to get there as ealy as possible 8ish? Let me know what you think. Otherwise I may be tempted to go Sat pm. DM
Noo Noo Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Do both - go on you know you want to. next board - can I get this one done first. Remind me on the next build to make sure I wear a hat. Got glue in my hair so had to give myself a hair cut last night - at about 11pm. So the comedy continues. I need to save my rocker table I reckon. Moving furniture around is not the way forward. DM I will be forwarding logo ideas soon. Watch this space!!!
mark o Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 DM, either day is good for me. Metoffice is showing Saturday a better bet than Sunday but windguru is saying different
mark o Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Perhaps we need to arrange a camping trip up to NW wales to enjoy what seems like constant wind
Noo Noo Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Now your talking MarkO. Constant wind. Unfortunately not but I reckon I've got access to some of the best beaches in the UK. I started to think that Saturday was going to be the best session yet. Nicely powered on the 9m in about 20 - 25 knots I'm guessing. Wind slightly cross on. 3 of us out. It was raining too which is great. Beach would never get crowded. WInd started to drop dramatically after 2 - 3PM. Real shame we were just getting warmed up. Skim board progress Got the glue out of my hair. I've taken all the weight off and put the furniture back where it should be. We have rocker - 20mm or so. Board seems quite flexi though. I'll get some shaping done and see what you think DM.
DjMoz Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Good morning NN, Bring the board around some time. Spud should be back, hope he had a good time. No kitesurfing this weekend, just crabtree Sat & Sun and a trip to the coast earlyish Sunday AM to get a little more of a tan. DM
DjMoz Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 And Pete has now bought a 16 Naish V4. I looked at the specs and It would not be my first choice as its a 2004 kite not 05+. We will try it and see though - it was cheap enough. DM
Noo Noo Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 Skim Update Did the bulk of the shaping last night and a fair bit of sanding. I've also cut the holes for the footstrap inserts. I was going to resin the inserts in place but I needed to seal the bottom of them first. So that's tonights mission. Then its more sanding followed by even more sanding and then a little more sanding before we get into varnishing and sanding just to break up the monotony. DM do you want fins? If so I need them tonight to measure and pre-drill the holes. I need to make sure that I can seal everything when I start the varnishing. Here's the logo for DM's board and any others I might make. Anyone got shares in a sandpaper company..........Rogue Wave.doc

Anyone got shares in a sandpaper company.......... Glad to hear that you are keeping yourself busy. Before you do the Strap inserts we need ot check that they fit the straps! Also I am still unsure about the varnish thing I have heard others not use it beacause of weight. I can drop off or you can pick up the fins this evening. Just noticed that the logo looks heat shaped, any reason for this? DM
Noo Noo Posted August 9, 2007 Report Posted August 9, 2007 Heat shaped - now you've got me confused. Do you mean heart shaped? I can see that. I suppose I could do you a nice pink version if you wanted I had a vision. I'm not the best at putting it on paper but that's what came out with the stuff I've got available. Honestly though I was trying to find some text that suggested waves, hence the lip / curve, but at the end of the day you need to be able to read it and I dont have the computer technology for posh fonts. Wish I did as it would be different, I had to compromise. I can do free hand but it would look poo when printed, stencilled or whatever. Truth is I thought it looked OK Fins, no worries might collect as I half fancy a swift ale this evening. Re the inserts we'll check but the alternative is just getting different set screws. Varnish is an interesting topic. An alternative is epoxy but its expensive and it also might get heavy, I'll look into it. I dont want this board to disintegrate now. Too much thought and effort has gone in. If it rides poo I'll burn it myself. Could always re-shape it though.............
Spudley Posted August 9, 2007 Author Report Posted August 9, 2007 Hello chaps, See you are getting into board building colin, would be interested in a skim myself, have a spare set of fins lying round already so guess the costs could be kept down. Looks like the wind has deserted us for the time being, be good to catch up soon, either for a swift beer or (fingers crossed) a fly. Camber was awesome, especially the first week with wind maxing out at 40 knots. Very busy at the w/ends though with everyone wanting to be in the lagoon, but plenty of space out back in the waves/chop. Transitions in front of/on the wave are so cool, and now jumping on each tack.
Noo Noo Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Good to hear from you Paul. Glad to hear you had a blast I dont mind making stuff. I'd really like to test this one with David first if that's OK. Need to find out what's good and bad in our current effort. Heaven forbid the thing falls apart after 2 minutes. Defo need to save my Rocker table then. Time to find a fibreglass supplier too I think.
DjMoz Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Paul, wondering what happened to you. Glad you had a good one will probably catch up this weekend. DM
DjMoz Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Weekend weather update, Saturday looks sunny, Sunday a little overcast. No wind due all weekend but possible a hint Saturday afternoon if you can find it. Next week on the other hand looks like it picks up good and proper again. DM
mark o Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Yup, its looking like Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday are all good candidates for evening coastal visits And they seem to coincide with low tide in the evening If the forecast continues we could be in for some fun.
DjMoz Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 1 Hour to go before I am in full time unemployment! I feel the need to celebrate!! DM
mark o Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 what's your plans for the weekend? some drinks and then some more drinks? I'm trying my hand windsurfing again on Saturday at an inland lake, seems to be some forecast wind as well Next week evenings I am available Tuesday night and Thursday night, fingers crossed the forecast remains.
Spudley Posted August 10, 2007 Author Report Posted August 10, 2007 Will make crabtree saturday afternoon if any hint of a breeze, possibly followed by a couple of pints. Anyone up for that? Cant make the midweek dash to the coast this week as i am back at work mon-fri but will keep options open for the following w/end.
DjMoz Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Yes, I can see that gap 2-6pm lifting no wind to a faint breeze! Have fun floating on a windsurfer Mark.
DjMoz Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 But I imagine I will make it Saturday Paul.
mark o Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 Anyone up evening runs this week? Monday/Thursday look good to me, Tuesday has heavy rain forecast and wednesday I am away
Noo Noo Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Absolutely. Tuesday onward for me. Little un this evening. How was the windsurfing Mark? Had some good times at Crabtree over the weekend guys. Little un really enjoyed Saturday. Thanks to everyone including Spuds Clan and DM's niece. Where did that wind come from on Sunday? Really good fun. Apologies guys, in a bit of cheeky mood on Sunday. Get all excited kiting these days. Perhaps it was surviving Pete's new toy in winds nearing 20mph. Didn't mind it actually not bad at all. DM, I'm still laughing at that little incident we witnessed. Funniest thing I've seen in ages even before Pete nearly killed us. Did he find his bag? I didn't see anyone on the way home..... Just checked the weather - Tomorrow and Wednesday look solid. I'm up for both. I like aching limbs. Means I haven't been sitting on my tosh.
DjMoz Posted August 13, 2007 Report Posted August 13, 2007 Good Morning All: Looking at the forecast now Today looks like it could stay constant for the evening. If you fancy a trip Mark then let me know. Otherwise Wednesday looks good Colyn. Tuesday may well be a wash out. DM
