aliendave Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Does anyone have the contact email/web addy of the nearest kiting club that I'm always hearing so much about. No-one seems to know how to get in touch with any of them! I live in Leeds and am out most weekends and spare moments during the week so I'm up for flying where-ever you want to. If I have to go inland I always go for Temple Newsham loads of large open space. But if I have the time I'll head towards Bridlington on the east coast (if it's just a day thing) or Barrow In Furness on the west (if it's a weekend thing, kip in the car or stay with my girlfriends parents). Beaches are where it's at. Anyone wanna meet up for kiting antics I'd be more than happy to drive, carry or fly. Quote
jack blood Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 i will be at the main uni in Leeds and unfotunately i do not have a car, so most of the time i will either be getting the bus or trying to get lifts:( ..... oh and how far away is Leeds from cleethorpes? becuase i often go up there and its a super nice beach. Peace Jack Quote
lazarus Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 you might find roundhay park it bit of a git to get to by bus (i know the leeds uni club found it tricky) busses out to tinshil top and bedquilts will be pretty easy, though they aren't the best flying sites. not sure what busses to york and castleford are like, both are race courses (horses) so i'd imagine they aren't too bad, never had to do it my selk though. cleethorpes is 78.3 miles away according to mappoint (going center to center), redcar in 70.3 miles (again mappoint going center to center). personally i tend to fly redcar when ever i can so will probably beable to offer a lift from time to time Quote
skuff-co-uk Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Its sort of crazy... Since moving in to my new pad in Kirkstall the wind has been all over the place! Too strong > To Low > Too busy > Too Tired > To many other things to do... But I will get out there at some point! Nobody told me it was windy up North! Temple Newsam sounds interesting... One thing I'm slightly concerned about is getting in... (esp. York Race course etc) Do you just drive up, get your stuff out and fly!? Do you go and see someone? Do you have to pay to get in? Which car park do you use? The sort of stuff that I can't seem to find any info on!? I hope there are other people that would quite like to know... Feel a bit of a wimp... But hell I am! Quote
gregh Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 york race course is easy! Check on the web that there are no horse races going on, turn up, park anywhere around it and fly Quote
skuff-co-uk Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Sweet... I feel like a dunce! Roundhay is nearer though! Same rules apply? Quote
lazarus Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Sweet... I feel like a dunce! Roundhay is nearer though! Same rules apply? yeah roundhay is a park where ever and fly though there is a rather large gray area when it comes to buggys and boards. basicly there are no signs that say you can't, there are rumours of a no vehicles with more than 2 wheels by law, and some one earlier in this thread sent an email to the council to ask, the reply didn't say banned but did say concerned. so basicly unless its really quiet stay off your board and if its quite busy stay off your kite. last thing we need is to give any one a reason to ban the use of the location. oh nearly forgot you also have the Jimmy Savil factor, it could be absolutly empty only you in the park, but if that goyt sees you tearing about expect the rangers to turn up soon. (he has a flat that overlooks the park) Quote
skuff-co-uk Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 Crikey! Ok thanks for the info... Now I remember about roundhay and why i couldn't board! Nevermind... I am very saftey consious so won't give anyone reason to ban any sites... I have insurance etc, and am respectful to other fliers/peds/dog walkers... Even when the dogs try to rip my expensive kite to shreds! Being a respectable member of the comunity is what it is all about! (esp. when you are a teacher!) Cheers again though that rocks! Don't know where to try first? Tinshill? I suppose I ought to go and have a drive round and scout out the locations... If you see a silver VW golf Estate with Ozone and Flexifoil stickers on come say hi! Chris. Quote
gregh Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 Chris, I've never had a problem at Roundhay, there is a certain Mr Williams there this weekend so its probably not a good time to go there! York racecourse is my current favourite inland place! Quote
lazarus Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 like wise i've never had a problem at roundhay, i've met people who have sat and chatted with the rangers while they've been boarding up there just because the rangers were curious what this kiting lark is all about. best bet is give it a go and see what happens. Quote
skuff-co-uk Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Anybody out and aboot this weekend? Not sure what the wind forecast is? I need to go flying... While I'm out or before I go I'll have to tape up the small tear in my frenzy Might have some marking to do before hand too! But hey if its windy.... Quote
jack blood Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 hey guys i will be starting uni tomorrow post on here or pm me if anyone wants to meet up for a fly Quote
DreadedTom Posted October 9, 2006 Report Posted October 9, 2006 Bit of an update on the whole buggies/boards can you/can't you situation. The Uni club was up there this weekend, bout 12 people flying, 5 boards out and a buggy. There was also another person buggying though not a member of the club. Whilst flying 2 park rangers drove over the field, didnt bat an eyelid. We thought one ranger was going to tell us off but he actually walked right passed and collared a golfer practising his strokes and sent him on his way.(blummin' golfers). So, it seems that currently the rangers dont give a rats bottom what your flying. Obviously if there were any other people in the park it might have been a different matter, but then we wouldnt have had so many people flying at one time. SO...As far as whats allowed and whats not it seems that during the nasty winter weather the rules are a bit looser. Obviously if any official tells you to pack up then do as your told. On a side note, has anyone here ACTUALLY been stopped? Not just heard stories but been stopped themselves? Regards Tom ps If nyone at Leeds Uni hasnt joined the club yet then get in touch! pss. Im in the library and amazingly bored................... Quote

maxlevens Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 hey - off to an interview for sheffield uni tomorow (bit of a mission from down here...), just wondering what the kiteboarding is like in the area - good sites around sheffield? near the uni? any kiters on here from sheffield uni? is it a cool place for a kiter to live basically? thinking of moving onto the water at some point too - how hard is it to get to the coast by public transport/blagging lifts from other sheffield kiters:rolleyes: thanks, Max. lazarus Posted May 30, 2007 Report Posted May 30, 2007 Its been a while since this thread has seen the light of day so i think its time for a bump. are there many leeds kites still about of have we all found nice bits of beach to play on and deserted the lumpy inland winds for the smoother winds of the coast. seems like ages since i flew in leeds, do we still have flying sites of have bans been put in place now? Quote
gregh Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 I don't think I've flown in Leeds for ages, last inland sess was at the racecourse..... Quote
Mouthwash Posted June 4, 2007 Author Report Posted June 4, 2007 Haven't flown a kite in Leeds for about two years now........ Didn't want to upset Jimmy! Quote
rod_bunny Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Went out on Roundhay tonight... wind was sh!te... off to fraisthorpe tomorrow Quote
PaulCa Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Hello people, Is anyone still flying up roundhay way? Just got a car again and gonna get right back on it... hopefully flying Sunday if anyone's around. nice Quote
lazarus Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 not been up to roundhay for years, tend to find the drive to the beach much more worth while, less dog ****, sparklers and pikies, better surface, nicer wind (usually) and much more space Quote
blade3k Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 Resurrecting this thread!!! im not at leeds for uni and will be kiting there soon..roundhay probobly..i dont have a car! whats all this about jimmy saville and buggying? Quote
