mihochan Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Has anyone done any serious damage to their ankles on a land board? A few weeks back I got freaked out by the speed I was going, jumped off and hurt my ankle a bit. ( Yeah, I know dumb idea. I was worried about coming off and just thought I'd get it over with. ) Anyway, are twisted ankles a real hazard and do people tend to wear special footware? Quote
djstu_d Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 yep, a good pair of boots. Currently using Lowas Renegades, very comfy, very supportive and very hard wearing Quote
Dave4uk Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Boots are OK for assisting ankles but in the long run will lead to weaker ankles. Like any other part of the body, they need looking after and strengthening. If you do have problems, strap them up before you go jumping! Basketball DAve Quote
Sky-Blu Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 a damn fine pair of boots will help loads. never leave home without them now. and as for serious damage, think this may be what you mean (my ankle): http://hometown.aol.co.uk/arran2/images/openreductionandfixation.jpg Quote
mad_marc Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 I use boots, too. In my opinion, the big risk ist too much friction, when you're out of control. That's why I cut the rough part off. I can slide with my boots very easily now, without big forces on my ankles and knees. Marc Quote
Lonewolf Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Looks a bit like my ankle lol except i have one less screw in mine, was not fun spent 3 months in plaster i usually find the problem is if u get one foot stuck in bindings so i tend to keep mine loose now to get out of easily Quote
Bob Monkhouse Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Looks almost exackery like my ankle did yesterday before they sliced my leg open, jemmied all the metalwork out, cut out out the scar tissue then pulled it in nice and tight and sewed it back up. Mmmm great fun. (at least mine wasn't kite related though) Quote
Sky-Blu Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 hey bob im having all my metal out in a months time too let us know how the recovery is as im going to be in the same boat as you. knowing my surgeon he'll do it in about 4mins flash but a dab hand with a drill and screwdriver Quote
Lonewolf Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 Lucky u sounds like im going to be stuck with my metal work its staying in my ankle been in there quite a while already Quote
Bob Monkhouse Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 let us know how the recovery is going...... It hurts dude Beer helps though Forgotten how shiit it is being on crutches Beer helps though Quote
Bob Monkhouse Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 Oh and I always wear hiking boots for flying and have never hurt ankles. Flying. Quote
akamini Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 I prefer to get padded up with helmet, full body armour suit and knee pads then just go down on my back/side/front and slide if I lose it. Trying to stay on your feet at speed is asking for trouble... Quote
npeac Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 agree with the above that the best pro for your ankles is a set of knee pads. get out of the habit of trying to step off the board and just slidle out like skaters do. i wear trainers most of the time and consider knee pads before my helmet in importance. a mate who refuses to pad up (legs are so skinny the pads wont stay up) stepped of at slow speed and agitated an old ankle injury and on the same day i was zooming 30 ft on my knees with peole reaching for the mobile and having the first two nines dialled before i sprang up and hopped back on the board. at the end of the day they cant hurt and its a bit committing to drop on your knees but once you get used to it its natural Quote
kiting mad Posted May 31, 2004 Report Posted May 31, 2004 ive just got back from wallop and i almost done some serious damage to my ankles while doing a jump.i turned round 360 but the board didnt Quote
Dave4uk Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 You need to start taping up ankles. Takes approx 18 months for full revcovery from a sprain. Wobble boards are excellent pieces of equipment for rehab of ankles - works the muscles around the foot and ankle. There are also a number of exercises that can be done - search the web! Hope you all get well soon Quote
Bob Monkhouse Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 Wobble boarding regularly again now. I find standing on landboard and flexing it back/forth good too. Will be getting a balance board in a couple of weeks too. Back to walking unaided again but no sport for another 3wks at least. Quote
c00ky Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 Welll after those gruesome piccies and tails my minor injury pails into insignificance, just a twisted ankle. Was wearing trainers on the board and stepped out at speed, hurt like buggery. Since then have used one of those elastoplast velcro ankle straps and purchased some stout mountain boots to keep everything secure. Will have to practice this landing on knees lark, wont you just face plant if you do it on grass? Quote
scud49841599968587 Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 a damn fine pair of boots will help loads. never leave home without them now. and as for serious damage, think this may be what you mean (my ankle): http://hometown.aol.co.uk/arran2/images/openreductionandfixation.jpgthey look like bloody wall plugs pmsl,,,,, wonder if they used a 12 or 14.4 cordless to put em in wiv??? Bet it bloody hurt tho, Quote
Sky-Blu Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 it really really hurt! for 48hours after the op i was on heavy painkillers and wasnt sleeping well. most of the pain was from where the bone had to be moved some distance back to where it should be. but having the staples out was lovely! stitches are so much worse, staples just pop out and are painless :D like bob im about to have all the metal out of my ankle and will have at least 6 weeks of very light duties, crutches etc. probably more like 8 to 12 before im boarding again Quote
scud49841599968587 Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 really feel for ya matey, wasnt tryin to diss the injury, it looks well bad, hope it all goes well n ya get back on ya ankle snapper soon lol, just be careful, things dont heal as strong as they were, blah blah blah, you`ve heard it all before no doubt.ouch bet it hurt. Quote
Tempest_Riders Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 Yep, both of my ankles are sporting some sort of pain.......The knee slide or complete body drag hurts much less in the long run then a tweeked ankle. I haven't had any Frankenstein looking ops yet....that thing is ugly. Quote
raptor Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 rmoval of metal work from your body will only take place if the surgon thinks its nesessary. Complain about it with each visit and they might take it out. @scud4984 youve got a weak stomache for NHS body reshaping LOL. Made me laugh when zotty and myself were talking war wounds Quote
