NorthNorfolk Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 Tim As a complete newbie to the sport, I can say that I bought my first kite in Sept (4m Buster) one week later bought a Flexdeck and never looked back. The Flexdeck took about an hour to get the hang of and feels very natural once moving. One thing I would say about it, is that it is not very stable when you gather a bit of speed up (a tightening of the bushes helped a little), I should think that the Kava is far more stable with it's extra length and adjustable 'springy' truck things. Buying the board is one of the best things I've done in a long time!! (well nearly!) Quote
wakeupandfly Posted December 9, 2003 Report Posted December 9, 2003 this thread is so full of hype and marketing lighter boards make learning loads easier, even if you are just into cruising they make the whole experience better and easier, also a lighter board feels so much more like a kitesurf board than a heavy one - kitesurf boards weigh 2 - 3kg! good beginners boards, in no particular order: scrub silver reef kheo air-s flexifoil flexdeck scrub trampa (go for long deck unless you are really short) earthboard prolite (bit pricey?) whatever people used to think about skate trucks being wobbly and channels being more stable has changed... skate trucks are so much more adjustable (except the mbs ones but as already said... out of price range) with proper tuning a skate truck will be the perfect thing for kiteboarding Tom Quote

Tim186 Posted December 10, 2003 Author Report Posted December 10, 2003 Thanks for your help jon your info was very helpful, much appreciated Quote
freez Posted December 10, 2003 Report Posted December 10, 2003 this is my 2p worth, i bought the silver reef just for the price, as i was also a newbie to boards and didnt want to get anything i may not like and pay a fortune for it, it is an ideal board for a beginner, its light and does its job very well. i then went and got the kava, now this is a heavier board and i aint gonna be jumping/tricks with it, but it really is great for just cruising along, it is strong and stiff and i know its gonna last for what i do (roll over the footie fields and i dont really wanna do tricks anyway) so my daughter has claimed the silver reef as hers (and getting better than me at it, aint it always the same) and i am more than happy with the kava Quote
Tim186 Posted December 10, 2003 Author Report Posted December 10, 2003 i think at the end of the day its just down to preferance, i was lookin at the silver reef, but i didnt like it to much, however it is a satble board so i am told, i have plenty of time to decide as i aint in any rush, so i will just keep looking at the posts and judge which board people most prefer and go from there, the kava and flexdeck seem to be a favourite among rider more so the flexdeck Quote
amanda Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Reading this in panic, only thread I could find and need help! I've ordered a kavadeck for my partner (xmas) thought it was the right thing for the beach, distance etc, but have just been told that jumping etc may be the thing of the future, aahhh.... is there any chance that basic jumps, skids etc are possible with this board? I don't think we are talking major jumping etc at this point but ....have I ordered the wrong board in light of new info? Please help. it isn't too late to change..... I personally would like the Kava..... but don't want to be selfish.... It is supposed to be a present..... Help! Thanks Amanda Quote
needakite mike Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 you wont be able to jump on one of these unless useing a big kite they are sooooooooooo heavey Quote
amanda Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Thanks... Different kites, depending on wind.... but are you saying that it is JUST TOO HEAVY? oh god another mistaken xmas pressie.... I hate shopping... seemed such a good and easy idea at the time... Thanks amanda Quote
mgs Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 I have just bought a Kava, its very smooth and great for cruising/racing and good for speed due to its weight.I guess you can jump with it but I dont think the designers had that in mind. Quote
amanda Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 good to know that it would have been good re original idea... I was hoping that there may be possibilities re jumps etc ahh ... do I keep it ?(for me) and get socks instead as the prezzie.!.. It turns out to be a mistake by the sound of it.... Amanda Quote
spooky Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 You can jump with any board, just that some do it better/higher than others? One thing you do need to bare in mind is whether the deck is to stiff, if it is landings will be painfull? This is because it is the deck that absorbes the impact and if it does not give somethingelse has to? Jon Quote
lazydog Posted December 13, 2003 Report Posted December 13, 2003 Amanda, I don't think you've wasted your money! Although jumping is great fun it's only part of the experience. Anyway, you'll still be able to jump with the Kava but not as high with a lighter board. Quote
amanda Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Thanks for encouraging words... I think I'll wrap it up, see whether it goes down ok and will quote Lazydog upon opening.. (maybe keep it for me I don't want to jump etc anyway) I hate christmas... It's such stress, why don't people just buy their own presents? Thanks Amanda Quote
kamikaze Posted December 14, 2003 Report Posted December 14, 2003 Ive got a heavy board, the exit airforce 2! Far too heavy for tricks and stuff, .....thats what i thought, till yesterday when it was windy!!! Advice: Heavy Board?? Wait for the wind!!!....Sorted! Quote
greendog Posted December 15, 2003 Report Posted December 15, 2003 What you want depends on your weight and ability, if you are below 90 kgs get a light board eg the flexdeck / air s...The Kava is hard to get to toeside when you get to that stage but the flexdeck is a good alrounder and will cope with frontside/toeside and a few jumps. The Kava will take some lift to get it off the ground Quote
