Baldy Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 Can anyone let me know the easiest way to self launch a Flexifoil Super 10, I have had the kite for some time know and have to rely on my kids being around to launch it for me. I have tried the ways mentioned in the instructions but end up dragging it along the ground Quote
kiteblip1599968588 Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 two ways - firstly ensure that there is sufficient wind low down and the kite will inflate, then gently tug it smoothly, maybe alternate tugging with the left handle and then the right, or both at the same time. aid this by being patient and wait for a gust and the kite should go up. dont rush and pull too hard as this will only hinder the kites inflation secondly, set up two bamboo canes at 45 degrees that will act as a launch pad for you to pull the kite up hope this helps Quote
jonnybfive Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 self launching is easy: Hold the kite up in the air so all the cells inflate. Gently place the kite on the ground (preferbly short grass or sand) Leg it back to your handles and gently walk back and give very gentle tugs on the lines Eventually the kite will float up, pull the lines tight and then give it a yank. The lite should then shoot into the sky and bobs ya uncle! Or try the bamboos above. Never had to try that but sounds like a good idea Best a luck Baldy! Quote
Agger Posted May 6, 2003 Report Posted May 6, 2003 I use the reverse take off method whenever I use mine, not very often but kept them just in case. :D :D Quote
superbman Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Let the cells fill with air and then gently place it back on the ground but at a slight angle to the wind.. You should find it'll then sit there waiting for you to very gently tug it to face the wind.. Take a couple of slow steps back with your handles near the ground.. WWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSH! Job's a good un. Quote

That's the secret I think, keeping your hands near the ground. I've seen people lifting their hands over the heads in an attempt to lift the kite from the ground, but this doesn't work. Personally though, I found some flexible plastic tubing in a craft shop, only about 6 mm in diametre. I stuck a straightened out tent-peg into each end and then stuck both ends of them into the ground, making a hump shape. Dragging the kite over this curve lifted it a foot or two off the ground and I would get a successful launch every time. Worked well with several kites stacked too! Quote
Guest DJ_Mac Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Just as a related subject, when you have mastered the launch, the "relaunch"!!! whenever you crashland the kites it always tends to land upside down. If you walk to the opposite side the kite came down with relation to the wind being directly behind you, then pull the line attached to the furthest side of the kite from you, the wind will blow the foil over. Walk back to the middle, and follow the hints you have already been given above. With practise you can even use this method to sort out a stack (Although I have only tried it with2) however in a stack sometimes you just have to walk back and sort it by hand. Have fun and remember it can be done, don't give up trying. Quote
GIT Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 ok hears the easy and simple way I do it take it out lines and all lay it face up (cell opening up) on hte sand/dirt then kick sand/dirt all over the bottem half of the kite so the bottem is coverd and the top is being inflated by the win walk back to your lines and tugg the top gently letting all he sand/dirt fall and up goes your kite this also works for putting it away Quote
Mouthwash Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Had the same query with my 8 recently. I got loads of helpful advice. Having practiced a fair bit it's clear to me that you need a minimum windspeed to self launch, only if the wind is strong enough to inflate your cells will you achieve self launching. Keepimg the hands on the floor gently pull the kite towards you. It will begin to jump up and down, eventually the wind will grab it and off you go. Works for me:cool: Chris Quote
Darkmiss Posted May 8, 2003 Report Posted May 8, 2003 I have to small metal tent pegs then i bend the ends down to make the eye end into a C shape then place them into the ground at each end of the spar so the the kite is about a foot of the ground and held by the bent tent pegs then just wait for a small ground wind and pull the kite from the pegs, and up she goes Quote
les rodley Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 If you push a stick in the ground just in front of the kite at 45dec and pull the kite slowley towards you the kite will ride up the stick and take off thanks les Quote
ChrisF Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 I had a stacker 6 and i actually found holding handles above your head trot backwards, as the kite lifts drop your arms down and the tension is put into the lines then up it goes.... i found this worked on long grass, the works.... give all the ideas a go... only probs with the stick theory is that you have to either move the kite or the sticks to launch again if you dont land in the right place! too much like hard work! he heee. kitestuff Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Does anyone else find that when they take a non-kite flying helper (in my case, quite often my own dear mum) they never remember which way up to hold they kite - no matter how many times you show them. Maybe it is just me. I should be grateful for any help I get I suppose Quote
Miniac Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 Get your self launch technique sorted and it won't matter. Once you're practiced even upside down and wrong way round landings can be sorted with the minimum of fuss. Can't say the same for the Highflyers Dimension I'm flying at the moment, it pulls like an S10 (probably better - it's been a long time), responds to control a lot quicker, can even be tricked (wouldn't know myself, not learned how) but if you crash it it's time for the walk of shame. kitedd Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 if the kites the wrong way round i find it easiest to be up at the handles end, gather one line up (not really gather but pull one line in alot more than the other) and the wind will flip the kites) round and hey presto, the kite flaps around abit and head for the sky. works everytime, even if the kite is upside down. great lil kites, gonna have to get a few for the winter days. happy fyling dude Quote
