benji2203 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 hey all, im thinking of getting a thicker wetsuit for getting out when the water is a little cooler. would a 5/3 be ok or should i go thicker? what do you use? cheers Ben Quote
mick Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Benji, I've just got a new one. 5/3 seems to be the norm and I think it said good for 6 deg. water temp. I've just come back from Cuba kiting in 32 deg. water temp so I shall have me Winty suit on tomorra. Quote
reggie8 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Winter is coming! 5/3 or a 5/4/3 will be fine in the winter bud. if your worried get a wettie with an attachable hood. Quote
Jay586 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 You can get a hooded thermo vest for under a wetsuit too. Quote
Afro1599968737 Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 a 5/3 is warm enough IF IT FITS. if it doesnt fit, 10mm of neoprene wont keep you warm Quote
KiteItRight Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Mystic Cure 5/3 DL Steamer Wetsuit 2011 best suit ive used and its 65 quid off do it.. Quote
T42 Posted September 11, 2011 Report Posted September 11, 2011 My Physco 2 5/3 keeps me leverrrly and warm, just add gloves and gimp mask when it gets really cold/snowing. Not a cheap suit but the best money I have spent on keeping warm. Quote
g0nz01599968659 Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Always try on a suit to ensure the seals at neck, wrists and ankles are gonna keep cold water on the outside of the suit. If you get a built in hood, check its a tight fit to your face - cos the last thing you want is it filling with water after you take a slam. I prefer separate hoods that go outside the suit neck seal so any water that gets in there can drain without leaking down into the rest of the suit! But yeah 5/3 with good accessories should be spot on - good boots (Atans) & gloves are gold when the temps get really low. Quote
The Geoff Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 Yup, 5/3 will do you all the way down to drysuit temperatures, as long as your not planning on spending an hour plus actually in the water. Agreed on the importance of fit - I'm using a Psycho 1 rather than the 2 simply because it fits me better. Quote
vinny Posted September 12, 2011 Report Posted September 12, 2011 ALSO if your intending to go through autumn and winter you might consider a dry suit cos if ya a big jessy like me then changing out of a wet suit in the freezing cold aint fun if you dont have a warm van !!!!! Quote
mick Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 What I've just found out is that you get what you pay for. O'Niel suit supposedly Winter steamer 5/3 and the zip pi55es in. OK I know it was only £150 but it still sells as a Winter suit ffs. Even my £30 Aldi has a better zip. Elephant legs of course and a blast of water right up to me scrote. And its a good fit. Quote
Maro Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 A 5/3 does me fine, when it's proper cold I wear a long sleeve thermal rashie with a biult in hood, boots and gloves help too. Quote
Cornishsurfer Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Hi, I had a Phyco 2 for four years, needed upgrade last winter & after Tons of research I got another 2011 phyco2 & love it. I was in the water in Feb. If you can't justify the £ you may be able to pick up a Gul vortex or viper whilst they still have a couple of shops open, but they are closing down & you don't have much time. If you cost it over 4 years use it's not that expensive. Quote
shemKSW Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Make sure its "blindstitched" and not flat locked, also that the key areas are taped or sealed to ensure stress areas are covered. Snugg custom wetsuits are without a doubt the warmest suits Ive ever worn! Quote

Was out at the start of January this year, which as you may remember was fairly cold, and with socks, gloves and hood it was fine. The only thing I did wrong that day was to set up without gloves on, which left my fingers cold through the session. On the North Coast here we wear winter suits all year round, just vary the accessories Quote

Doesn't sound right about the zip, I've got a couple of O'neill suits & the zips are pretty dry, might be worth checking it with the shop you bought it from? Use proper velcro straps for your ankles to stop water going up em If you get the elephant legs, make a very tiny hole in the back of the leg just above the ankle strap & the water pressure inside the suit will force water out - problem solved. Quote
mick Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Thanks for that Gonzo. It appears its the bottom of the zip thats leaking thro. really, apart from that I'd be happy. I might call em tomorrow and see what they say. Quote
mick Posted September 16, 2011 Report Posted September 16, 2011 Quick update. Taking Gonzo's advise, I rang Wetsuit Centre and they agreed instantly to take it back and check it. Anyone got a black bag I can put it in? So glad I didn't pee in it on Saturday. Quote
steeve82 Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 Hi guys! I just bought a winter wetsuit, semmidry,in size LT,and it`s fit perfectly but the arms look a bit big (around a biceps,i`m a tall skinny guy:))).It`s feel tight enough around a wrist. My summer wetsuit is XL and it`s fit 100%.The shop did not have XL for me.Should i bring back or the small gap between my arm and a suit is acceptable? Thanx for everyone Quote
bucski Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 And get a suit that is single lined all over, way warmer (most suits are surf wetties and aren't single lined increasing wind chill, which is obviously a major factor in our sport) Quote
Guest Nathaniel Marc Fuller Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 I have recently just bought a 2011 prolimit c3 5/3, it's very toasty! I can possibly get you an amazing deal on one if you are interested? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Rich_A Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 I only started in october this year. Me and a mate both got ION strike suits that are 5/5 and thay are lovely and toasty. Leading upto our first lesson i got it in my head that the water temperaature was atleast -20 and i could definatly see iceburgs off of southend pier lol so brought myself some oneal thermals to go with it. obvioulsy i spend a lot more time in the water than you guys having just started but i caan honestly say i havnt even been remotely cold. Adlerr Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 I prefer to stay out of cold water and i would also advice you to stay out of cold water as it can cause high fever and running nose. Quote
Wowzer Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 Hi guys, I've been reading this thread with interest, would this suit a beginner like me? I'd like to learn to kite over the winter.
