Jailbreaking and unlocking are 2 entirely different things. Jailbreaking opens up the iPhones operating system and allows you to add functionality to the phone such as third party applications and cracked apps. Unlocking allows you to run your iPhone on a different network. Jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod touch is completely safe, simply to do and easy to reverse should you need to. Find out which firmware you are currently running by looking in SETTINGS and follow the relevant quide below, its as simple as backing up your device, connecting it to your computer then running the correct jailbreak tool. You will be presented with step-by-step instructions which takes around 1 minute to complete. Firmware and jailbreak tools can be found here THE LEGALITY OF JAILBREAKING The legality of jailbreaking an iPod or iPhone remains unclear, particularly in the context of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. As part of the 2009 DMCA rulemaking, the Electronic Frontier Foundation asked the US Copyright Office to recognize an exemption to the DMCA to permit jailbreaking in order to allow iPhone owners to use their phones with applications that are not available from Apple's store. In response to this, Apple filed comments opposing this exemption and indicating that they do consider jailbreaking to be a violation of copyright (and by implication prosecutable under the DMCA). A ruling on this proposed exemption has not yet been made, but a decision is expected sometime later in 2010. You may not currently be breaking any laws however it is againt Apples terms and conditions and the T&C of your network provider. While you will not be subject to any legal action you will almost certainly void your warranty if you are discovered to have jailbroken your device. Some reading material: http://www.prlog.org/10163607-is-it-legal-to-jailbreak-your- iphone.html http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/13/technology/13jailbreak.htm l?_r=1&ref=technology http://www.infoaddict.com/the-legality-of-jailbreaking-your- iphone Will add some more info from another forum thread in a while. JAILBREAKING 3.1.3 iPhone 2G Jailbreak? Yes Unlock? Yes Relax, you’re lucky. The original iPhone has been permanently pwned, and nothing Apple does can prevent your jailbreaking or unlocking your phone. If you have upgraded your phone, you will have lost your jailbreak and unlock, but you can easily get it back by running redsn0w 0.9.4. When it asks you to point it to the firmware currently installed on your iPhone, you will have to “trick” it by pointing it to the 3.1.2 ipsw instead. Redsn0w will jailbreak your phone and with Ultrasn0w, which you can use to unlock your phone. iPhone 3G Jailbreak? Yes Unlock? No You can jailbreak your phone using redsn0w 0.9.4. When it asks you to point it to the firmware currently installed on your iPhone, you will have to “trick” it by pointing it to the 3.1.2 ipsw instead. Sadly there is currently no way to unlock the new baseband installed with this firmware upgrade. This means that you can only use your phone on the carrier it is officially locked to (unless your phone is factory unlocked). There is not currently any prospect for unlocking your phone. iPhone 3GS Jailbreak? Yes - Spirit 3.1.3 has now been released Unlock? No Whether you can jailbreak your iPhone depends on whether you were previously jailbroken and have your phone’s ECID SHSHs on file in Cydia (you can check this by opening Cydia on your phone and seeing if it says in green at the top of the main page: “This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2″). If you do have this information on file, you will be able to downgrade your phone to 3.1.2 using Saurik’s server to sign your install request (follow instructions here). You will then be able to jailbreak your phone using redsn0w or blackra1n. If you do not have your SHSH on file, you cannot downgrade your phone’s firmware at this time, and you will therefore be unable to jailbreak your phone. All of the 3GS jailbreaking tools currently available rely on a USB exploit which has been patched in the 3.1.3 firmware. Since you cannot downgrade to 3.1.2 or earlier, you are out of luck for jailbreaking at the present time. Sadly, whether you can jailbreak or not, there is currently no way to unlock the new baseband installed with this firmware upgrade. This means that you can only use your phone on the carrier it is officially locked to (unless your phone is factory unlocked). There is not currently any prospect for unlocking your phone. Update: Spirit, an untethered jailbreak, has now been released: Windows: http://files3.thebigboss.org/repofiles/nonrepo/Spirit.exe Mac: http://69.175.8.58/repofiles/nonrepo/Spirit.app.zip Im an iphone novice so don' ask me anything to complex but by having an official iphone thread we can all help each other or suggest stuff we may have missed. kinny Posted May 20, 2010 Author Report Posted May 20, 2010 OS 4.0 announced Unveiled during a press event at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, the updated OS offers more than 1500 new application programming interfaces (APIs) for developers in iPhone 4.0. According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the new APIs let developers access features like the iPhone’s calendar, photo library, video-camera data, and more. App creators can also take advantage of OS X features like Quick Look, in-app SMS, and more. Plus, there are more 2000 APIs for hardware-accelerated math functions in the iPhone 4.0 OS. In addition, iPhone 4.0 boasts more than 100 new user features, such as playlist creation, 5x digital zoom in the camera app, tap-to-focus for video, auto photo-geotagging, the addition of Places functionality, the ability to change the Home screen wallpaper, improved spell-checking, and support for Bluetooth keyboards. Many of the features added are already available on the iPad, which currently runs iPhone OS 3.2. The OS update, which is available as a developer build now for app makers, will arrive in consumers’ hands in the summer. Not all devices will be able to reap all the benefits of iPhone 4.0. Owners of the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch should be able to run all the features, but iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch owners will only support some of the features—for instance, those devices will not be able to use the multitasking features that highlight the update. Fellas can I please ask that noone posts any direct links to cracked apps/games. While the act of jailbreaking itself isnt breaking any laws, posting warez links to cracked games and applications is against forum rules. Its ok to mention certain sites (ie. "xxxx app can be found on Appulo" or "you can download xxxx from Cydia") but do not post any direct URLs such as rapidshare and megaupload links. Thank you. Quote

Heres how to bypass this charge: Please note that you do not need to be jailbroken to do this! Using your phone, browse to help.BenM.at | BENM.AT within Safari, scroll down and select Mobileconfigs download, then select United Kingdom and finally choose the O2 Vertigo settings and click install - dont worry that it says the file has not been verified, install it anyway. Once this is done restart your iPhone then go to SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > INTERNET TETHERING and turn it ON. Thats it, you should now be able to use your iPhone as a modem but remember, despite O2's iPhone tariff having "unlimited" data they will notice if you use your phone to start downloading large files or watching streams such as BBC iPlayer. O2 have threatened to cut off anyone found to be tethering their phone without paying the monthly charge (however if youre sensible theres no way they can detect it). Warning: do not do this if you are with O2 Ireland, you may be charged! TIPS FREE VOIP CALLS There is a free application called FRING (available from the App store) which allows calls on Skype etc when connected to a WIFI network. This is all well and good, but what if you are wondering around in town with no WIFI network? In fact, you can crack Fring to permit this on the 3G iphone (but not the original). In order to made available through the App Store, the Fring developers had to disable the call over network aspect of the programme (Apple do not approve of this) So the steps: Instructions for 3g Fring 1) You must be running a Jailbroken iPhone / iTouch 2) Install original Fring via iTunes App Store. 3) Now SSH into your iPhone / iTouch; remember root / alpine 4) Find Fring.app under root var/mobile/applications 5) To find the Fring.app, you then need to click on the most recently installed folder which will be your original Fring and inside should be the Fring.app 6) On your computer, rename the modified 3g Fring .api to .zip; it will now open in winzip or mac compatible unzipper e.g. zipeg (modified file available here RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting pa) 7) Delete the original Fring.app on your iPhone / iTouch 8. Copy the extracted 3g Fring.app from the zip folder across to your iPhone / iTouch either via the WinSCP (PC) or Yummy FTP (Mac). 9) Now you need to set the permissions. This is easy so please do make it more complcated for yourselves. ALL the files within the 3g Fring.app replacement must be set to 755 (Yummy) or 0755 (WinSCP). You should see all the files being altered as it goes through the process of changing the permissions. 10) When I tried it, it worked immediately after changing the permissions without a reboot but if it does not work then please reboot. CREATE YOUR OWN RINGTONES You can convert your own MP3s into ringtones using the software that can be found here: iRinger :: iPhone Ringtone Factory [iPhone Ringtone, iPhone Ringtones, iPhone Ringtone Maker, iPhone Ringtone Creator] CLOSING APPS You can fully close any application by holding down the HOME button for 10 seconds. Most applications will continue to run in the background if you just press HOME, this allows them to be opened again quicker and also to save any page youre currently browsing but may also result in your iPhone slowing down. SPEED TEST You can run a speed test on your iPhone by going to Testmyiphone.com - iPhone Speed Test in safari. BATTERY SAVING TIPS If youre concerned by the battery life of your iPhone there are a few things you can do to help it last longer: * Run your battery down completely at least once a week and recharge it for at least 5 hours. A lot of people think you dont need to do this because the new iPhone uses a li-ion battery but apple claims it keeps the software calibrated and should result in a noticable improvement in battery life. * Turn off 3G - making calls using 3G uses up more batter power compared to using EDGE. * Turn off Bluetooth. * Turn Location Services off. * Turn off PUSH email and set FETCH to 'less often'. KEYPAD TIP If you are writing an email with the qwerty keyboard and you need to add punctuation or numbers press the 123 button and hold it down. Then slide to the the symbol you need and release. this will return you to the qwerty keyboard. Quote

Vouchercloud If you are wandering around trying to find food, vouchercloud will find you the nearest place to you that has an offer on (2 for 1, free pud etc) uses the GPS to get you there too. For f1 fans the only app worth having is the official formula1.com one, shows you live timings and lap by lap progress - free unlike the motoGP one that they want you to subscibe too - so I have not bothered. FPS - Eliminate Pro, free to play to a point, them pay for extra time each day, ungrade and enhance your kit just like in COD Edited May 20, 2010 by oc1rob Quote

Cyprino Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Tap Tap Revenge is another good game, but the online part has gone a bit OTT with weapons and crap like that. Unfortunately you have to pay for tracks by recognisable artists, but some of the free tracks allow you to find some cool, new (and relatively undiscovered) artists. I've just bought Angry Birds, it's feckin' awesome Some of the levels are a bit tricky, but the satisfaction of killing all the pigs is fun (ipod touch 3rd gen user, btw) Quote
Phizz Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 If you have an Apple TV, the Remote app is awesome. The various guitar tuners are super useful. Air Sharing (or similar) is handy for getting files on and off the phone. Don't have a lot of recent games, but some of the oldies like Edge or Dizzy Bee are great. Angry birds rocks. I also got Final Fantasy 1, which reminded me of the good ole 1980s on the NES I use Photoshop Mobile to touch up pictures which I post straight from the iPhone, tough I wish it had a few more settings. Loads more too. Quote

Dunc Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 I picked up my iPhone 4 this morning! So far very happy with it. The display and the camera are pretty epic which is nice compared to previous incarnations of the device. I'll try uploading some photos that I've taken so far so you can get an idea of what I'm on about. Just want to find someone else I know with one so I can give the Face Time thing a go! Quote
kinny Posted June 24, 2010 Author Report Posted June 24, 2010 Dunc, how does the signal fair during a call while holding the phone in your hand as you normally would, seen a fe vid' where the call has been dropped due to the hand blocking the signal? Quote
Dunc Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 No problems so far but haven't taken too many calls today. The signal definitely reduces at times when held in certain ways but that only seems to be when you've got a proper death grip on it. Just uploaded a couple of pics to Photobucket which I'll post below. These are completely untouched and I'll be interested to see what they look like when I fire up my laptop tomorrow. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f273/drunkan101/9b3c14ef.jpg http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f273/drunkan101/c8027c4b.jpg Quote
