I've have scoured the forum and haven't found any guide for any inflatable newby to use in a rough and quick guide of setting up and getting going. Use of diagrams and videos would be nice to add to this thread for any person wanting this kind of help.

all welcome to contribute :)

You normally receive a user manual with a kite ? That tells you what to do for that kite specifically to the way it was designed to be used. They're not all the same. If it's been bought off Ebay then doing a google search will usually turn up the PDF version of the manual.

a way to remember how your kite was set up the last time you used it is to do what i did to a few of my land kites - use small cable ties or elastic bands near the knot on your lines - then you dont have to try and remember which knot you used last time.

as said above if you have never had a lesson then get one it will save a lot of time and pain ,as being dragged along a beach might look funny but it is not.

and yes there are alot of videos out there some are good alot are crap . you dont say what kite it was you got so have a look at the makers web site for info

There is a video on Youtube made by Airbossworld which shows how to do it all. I watched it before i had a lesson and tbh it told you all the basics of setting up and packing down an LEI. The main thing to remember is you need someone to help you launch an LEI unless you are very experienced.

Looks to me like you fly kites pretty well, depower too, it's just a depower with a baloon on the front! TAke a mate and go fly it! LOL! We did. 15.5 Airush lift. 2 of us, never had a depower or lei before and we had no issues! I was tearing it up in the buggy within half an hour!

presuming thats you in the photo i'd say your a fairly confident flyer pie face. if you have money to burn then yes get yourself a lesson.

but really if you are already used to depower foils and arcs (which by they are more powered) you will be sweet.

All you really need to do is find out how to launch, land (get a buddy or random kiter to help first up) and activate the safety. theres usually tones of vids on u-tube showing kite set up.

Its not much different really.

then you need to fly the kite (presuming sle) with the bar in part or all the way most of the time. Try not to over fly that bastard or it will hindenburg out of the sky and go for it.

I was in a similar place to you in november. i was used to flying my 10 manta in up to 25+knots. now the manta at 25knots fully depowered is skudding you down the beach at the edge of the wind it has BALLS.

with that in mind i launched (with the help of a kite surfer) my 11m ozone edge sle in 18 knots for the first time with trembling hands waiting for the pull and prepaired to tame the wild beast. wheres the wild beast? now where with the bar out there was almost not pull at the edge of the window. easy peasy.

A few minutes of static flying and jumping about i jumped on the board and was boosting jumps within a couple more minutes.

I'll go one step further and say that it required more skill to fly a powered depower foil than it does an sle. excluding launch and land.

All very nice advice guys, but this isn't just for me. It's for anyone looking to start out who want to move on and progress in the kite world. Not complete newbs.

I've been flying depowerable foils and arcs for close to 3 years now and I'm damn confident when it comes down to it all, and yeah thats me in the pic :)

I just thought that It might be a nice idea for anyone else that has scoured for advice similar to the topic within this thread.

Got my RRD already to go for its first flight. now where's the wind?!! lol ;)

This is in a kitesurfing thread, so assuming you're heading for the water YOU DO need lessons, just jumping in with a mate wont cut it as you all of a sudden wont know (from guessing) how to perform a 'deep water packdown' or any other type of water based kite self rescue. There are no 'walks of shame' out to sea.

People having problems justifying a £90 lesson to be shown how to use their grands+ worth of kit may benefit from the PROGRESSION (beginner) dvd.

the lesson police hit these types of threads pretty hard!!! get a lesson get a lesson get a lesson!!!! or you will burn in hell for eternal damnation.!

After that rant i rate a lessonat the very least for learning self rescue techniques at sea.

you should be able to handle launching/landing/body dragging/water starts by yourself if money is tight.

The lesson police are normally quite justified as most people jumping onto the water don't have piefaces 3 years experience, but still 3 hour 1-1 should get the missing links sorted out and see you on board starts, for everything you do know there will be one thing you didn't. balance under a kite in the water isn't quite the same as being dragged over a field on your face :)

failing to see the importance of some kind of lesson will bite you on the arse one day.

The progresion DVDs are the best I've seen on the market as already mentioned.

don't you worry i see the importance of a lesson. but for experienced land kiters (apart from self rescue techniques) i don't think its a a deffinate requirement. you can teach yourself in a safe albeit slower progressing manner.

now for a complete newbie. yes get those lessons or feel the wrath of the wind gods punishing you with a power if a grunty kite.

Deep water packdown is explained on the free RNLI DVD. And in lessons, I have yet to meet anyone where the instructor did it for real..... it's more like, I'm going to tell you this is how you do it , but I can't be arsed to stand on the beach for an hr sorting out the tangles... if it all goes wrong do the following... keep one line under tension, avoid the sunken lines, don't deflate until told to by the rescue boat, keep knife handy, blow whistle, release flare, inflate bouyancy aid, call mates on beach with mobile in aqua pack, keep the board on etc... ;) (cue safety flamers!!)

Also if money is really tight you can torrent Progression. No1 is on there if you know where to look (cue copyright is theft, flamers!!!!)

i had to self rescure about 1km out to sea. if was my fault for being a cock and not re-directing properly after a jump. i flew under the kite it hindenburged oout of the sky and tangled up.

any way made my way to the kite winding lines so the kite stayed flagged. straddled my kite and sailed its arse back into shore. took me about 40 mins.

morrell of the story? don't do silly jumps 1km out to sea!

i already knew that morrel but had to learn the hard way to listen to them,.... hehehe

How many lessons have you taken if you have never come across a lessons that actually does a deep water pack down ? I must be lucky that I took my lessons with garry and did two deep water pack downs. I'm glad I did as I have used it twice when I've had 5th line wraps. To be honest it sounds like you need a lesson on deep water pack downs ;)

If you did a lesson with bksa and didn't do deep water pack down name and shame.

I have the progression DVDs and they are good but they are no substitute for lessons, if that makes me a lesson flamer so be it.

You got many bans on your beachs in newzeland ? Everytime some fuck with with a kite who doesn't know what he's doing hurts a member of joe public the councils are looking to shut us down and pen us in.

Sooooo wheres the advice?? ive only set up twice but if someone doesnt spill the beans i might have to write summin.

i will start, make sure your deflate valve on the leading edge isnt open when trying to inflate the leading edge with the primary leading edge valve... yes i did that :o

Lesson #2

Do not hot launch your LEI in the middle of the kite set up area like you do with your foil, but wait patiently for a kind experienced kite surfer to come over and launch you nice and safely at the edge of the wind window after first checking for obstacles and giving all the BKSA approved hand signals.

Lesson #3

Only go on the water if you have been clearly demonstrated a deep water packdown at least two times by a nice BKSA instructor called Garry (with at least two RR's) who doesnt mind spending your hard earned cash on the rest of the lesson untangling the lines... :)

Not enough irony for my liking....

ok add on to Step 1, unroll your kite then lay it down flagged down wind.

step 1a. Pump the struts up first (the smaller verticall inflatable bits) to avoid getting in a pickle, if you pump the leading edge up first it will take the C shape and make it incredible difficult to pump up your struts.

Step 1b. When your kite is inflated, make sure its pumped up sufficiently, you can tell by flicking your leading edge, if its a low pitch noise, keep pumpin, youlee know when its pumped up enough because when you flick it the kite will make a higer pitch Pinging noise.

Step 1C, Turn your kite over and face it Up wind so that the wind can only push the kite to the ground.
