Cafe.Racer Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 My sleeve came on Friday - fitted it tonight. Only tried it in one of my buggies (main one) and it's just a nice fit. I didn't try it in the 2nd buggy, but I can say that I know that the bushes on my main buggy need to be tapped in, whereas they fall out of the 2nd buggy. So, Steve's right, be careful and measure your headstock. If you are going to guess, I would make the OD 36.5mm, but you might find it too tight (could freeze it in?) or too loose (drill and spot weld?). I still had some up/down float, so I ended up slipping a plastic shim in the bottom (top of a coleslaw pot, cut into an 'O') Quote

Craigy333 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 alrite guys, i have a question about the head tube on my flexi buggy, the nut and bolt that go threw the forks is reli tight but i have play in the forks?? do i just need to give it sum to move it, or is it seased or something?! i havent taken it apart or re greased it! had it about year and half but never reli had it out in rain either ( maybe 1ce or 2ce, but always trtied to cover it asap) craig Quote

Coming up to 2 years now and it's still going fine, and this is the one that was really worn to start with. From this I'd say that this is a really good mod to do if you get a lot of use out of your buggy, or if you suffer from headstock squeak headaches! I have asked the bearing company and was told the tolerance on these bearings are N6 Not to sure what this means I was thinking of machining them to 36.05mm + 0.05mm - 0.0mm any help appreciated Rob Quote

Mine's still going strong - & thanks again for your help way back when. Got to say though that my buggy sees very little beach action, so I don't know how it would fair if it was regularly exposed to salt water & sand. Like high.as.a.kite though, I've got the headstock protectors on mine which helps keep crap out of the bearings. Any reason you're asking Paul? Is yours still ok or have you had issues? Quote

As mentioned, the sleeve will need machining specifically to fit your downtube, but the forks should slip into the bearings nicely without any modding, even if they are worn. Quote

I just told the guys who machined the parts for me that the bearings needed to be a press fit - I.e. nice & snug to the point of needing a little force to insert them in to the sleeve. Are you machining the sleeve yourself? If someone is doing it for you then I recommend giving them the bearings and the downtube as well and getting them to make up the whole assembly for you. I also gave my guys the nylon inserts to machine down too. All I then had to do was apply a little marine grease and drop the forks in. Quote
