i dont think experience has anything to do with it surely??

the better you are, the less youre going to need a leash, so thats just silly...

in all the trips i was out learning by myself, i never went far at all from the shore, and onyl ONCE did i drift from my board, just walked ashore and walked upwind and dragged/waded out to it again

since progressing to being able to ride properly out and in, ive never had need for a leash, never lost the board and not been able to drag/swim back to it

if you need to be riding somewhere where you are learning, and out of your depth and cant just wade back up to the board, you need to rethink your location really

dread to think what would have happened having a board leash attached in this incident...powering along nicely trying to go for soem speed, dug the nose in some chop when carving upwind to slow down and crashed down then forwards through the air and water for a good few metres...back of my head would have been a right state if a board leash propelled it into me...

Sorry to restart this but its still here. Save you reading the whole lot.

"A leash is also a pretty essential piece of kit enabling you to keep the board attached to you when you wipe out- you must use a helmet if you use a leash. Approx £40."

Essential they still call it.

Anybody here still with the BKSA?

Just learn to body drag.

I have never used one and tobe fair have come close to losing my board. However, my mate used a board leash until he hit a sand bar, the board stopped while he kept going, when the board leash hit full tension it broke free of the sand and hit him in the leg.

Ruined a new billabong wetsuit and cut his leg open, 15 stitches open!

Mate that's not the BKSA website you're quoting there. Haven't got time to look but just because oceanaddict say it doesn't mean it's still on the BKSA site.

OK Andy. Having had a look again at it, anyone who looks is gonna think its BKSA approved. Lots of quotes and the BKSA logo on the piece. BUT you may have a point.

Unfortuntely there are sites that contain out of date information and use logos and information linking them to people like the BKSA without really having permission to. To display the BKSA logo and use their content you must be a BKSA approved school, I can see no evidence either on their site or the BKSA site that they are BKSA approved. so it seems the site in question want you to believe they have connections with the BKSA at the same time as giving advice contrary to the BKSA,"I may be completely wrong".

You will find that up-to-date instructors and schools will not use or recommend the use of board leashes, this should help you determine the rogue instructors and schools that don't attend the 3 yearly revalidation courses the BKSA provide free of charge or maybe some have never had formal instructor training.

use a 15m in 40+Kts off shore and a 7'10" surf board

http://www.thesurfsanctuary.co.uk/attachments/Image/bksa_logo.jpg

guess that means it is BKSA affiliated then by your logic.

(just for liability reasons, this statment is not BKSA affiliated or recomended by any kite association. IT IS JUST PLAIN IDIOTIC)

Maybe it is idiotic. I know it, you know it but maybe new kitesurfer bloke sees the logo as I did and assumes its good to go. Maybe BKSA should jump on their case and get the logo pulled. I for one would in the name of safety. In fact I'm gonna emailly them and put em straight. I'll let you know the outcome.

Actually by my logic I was trying to make the point that it appears that particular school is using the logo unnoficially and not representing the BKSA values. I might have the wrong end of the stick but it appears you were having a go about my comment without fully understanding what I said.

Gaz, I think he meant that because the site was using the BKSA logo to obviously promote themselves it doesn't make it right. I feel he wasnt commenting on you but me. I genuinely did believe they were affilliated to the BKSA. Wouldn't anyone?

I emailed them for an explanation asking why they were posting info that was NOW not recognised by the BKSA. Obviously it was, and I guess now they haven't updated although it does show todays date on their site.

I will post my email and the reply should we get one.

Yeh, he didn't quote anyone so the response could have been for anyone of us and I took it to be me with it being straight after my post:o

Unfortunately there is information flying about the great tinternet that is years old, I personally review my site every few months but think I am in the minority.

Leash-less is the way, You will find it is much better without and safer, just learn to body drag..

The first time you a away from your board you will find that you will learn to body drag real quick..lol ..

If you really must have a leash , then the best one to get would be a reel leash it allows for the board to seperate from you when falling off, but it does have its problems too, watch out for flying clips, they have a tendancy to hurt.. Make surt you use an extention between the leash and board...

But you really should be going leash-less.

the advise to noobs should be buy a cheap scrotty board to learn on then they have not got to worry about loosing it and run the risk using a leash

but i suppose the schools like to sell them a shinny new board

noobs - dont spend more than you can afford to loose on a board, you will buy a new one in a few months anyway so save your cash;)

That would be the shops doing that not the schools.......:(

Schools are the ones that teach you how to bodydrag, lol.

Ive never seen the pics of the accidents before. horrible.

we advise noobs to get a older second hand board, a couple of things about that is 1, not always easy to find 2, not always a good size for you when you find it. the other is when you have just done your lessons all you want to do is get out, so it is essential. learn to body drag... that is it. someone said on here that you need to have the raw skills and they are right. i can go anywhere i want with my kite and don't worry about my board. there are a couple of times that i have needed to kick the board away from me and if i couldn't or it was attached i could have been very hurt.

just good advice here from the ppl that know.

good winds :)
