Has anyone been kitesurfing at southampton Hillhead ?
lucanairtime replied to Robster's topic in Kite Surfing
Hey Rob, do No# 1 1. By Seaferers sailing club where you rig and set up on the grass to the east of it. No problem with space BUT on windy sunny days they do get 40 + kites out. They have a small team of people who will keep an eye on the venue to stop any dangerous kiting. Has worked well for a number of years. We set up in one spot. Salterns lane car park. If you have any questions please shoot. Lucan -
Hey Ben, im glad you have made your decision to change for a newer kite. as for pricing your gear, depending on condition you should look to get £100 each if they are complete. if you are going to sell them on ebay please could you leave out the words "perfect beginner kite". Cheers. Lucan

Also, just to add. The people on this forum are very good at raising points that you may not have thought of. The kite size's you have there are out dated and dangerous for a beginner. I know its a outlandish statement but there are many factors to kitesurfing. Kite type, size, age, condition and local weather to mention a few have to be taken in to account. Let's say you lived in a warm country that gets on most days 12kns, the kite sizes you have there would get alot of use. In the uk we can see alot of change in the wind from day to day. (trying to find the best wat to articulate my point) in the summer in the south we will see around 15-20kns on average, when its a hot day and 15kns onshore that wind will get accelerate due to the land heating up and the cooler air from the sea rushing toward land to fill the gap the rising air has left. so if you are out on your 15m quite happy at 15kn you will go from powered to overpowered in a space of minutes. i have been on the beach when it was about 12kns, it was a hot day and i was pumping up my 9m. a friend was pumping up a 20m and was looking to have just a bit of fun on the flat water in the light winds. He was out for about 6 mins before the sea breeze kicked in and he was stupidly over powered. He had to ditch the kite into the water and prey it didn't re-launch. Now you may think that he was a beginner but he in fact has 9 years of kiting under his belt. He weighs about 75- 80kg. The other things you need to be aware of are depower. As a learner depower is the best thing about a kite. Newer delta kites have heaps of depower that will make you feel safe which will only make you more confident. I have flown the newer Vegas and its not a very forgiving kite, you need to have board skill/experience to control the speed and power of the kite much more than just letting the bar out. TBH i could continue with 100's of different reasons why you should not pump up tho's kites but i have work to do. Other people will back me up and add other reasons. Please read with the knowledge that we are looking out for each others safety and longevity of the sport we love. Lucan

Hey Ben, not sure if the south coast is too far for you to travel. Hampshirekitesurfing dot com is a professionally run school that has your progression in mind. Cheers Lucan

The ion will not relaunch the same way as a delta, i think once you have the relaunch sorted you will have no problems. When the kite is upside down and in the water in front of you (down wind) just pulling on the left or right line will not relaunch the kite. If you pull the front lines toward you till your kite is almost laying on its back then gently pull one of the steering lines the wing tip will catch the wind and start to head towards the window. Making sure the hand you use then pulls the opposite line as when the kite is relaunched you want to have the relevant line in your correct hand. Doing all this your kite will make an attempt to rise out of the water make sure at this point you have the bar out, your hand still on the line and the front lines now at full length. The kite will re launch a bit hot but as long as you know the kick is coming its not a problem. Hope this helps you not waist your money and keep flying. but if you really want a different kite then check out the Kahoona.

If your thinking of a Kahoona the one kite size has to be the 9.5m
