Bego Boys Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I live on the north side of Doncaster and am very fortunate to have what i consider to be a very good flying site, the only drawback with it is the derelict state it is in at the moment. To that end i have been in touch with the local council to try and arrange for them to develop the site as a flying area with the eventual intention of setting up a club so we can manage and develop the site, which i feel would benefit not just seasoned kiter's but also go some way in introducing newcomers to the sport. The site itself benefits from absolutely no trees or pylons and also has gradually elevated banks. Wind from virtually any direction should be usable for most forms of land kiting. The grass is the main problem as it is very coarse and really needs to be cut back, this is why i have been in touch with the council, in the hope that they would start the ball rolling by using their machinery to cut back the grass to a more manageable level. They have just last week said they will be considering this as an option and have asked me to attend a meeting to discuss this and put my case forward. I now need some sort of feedback to see what kind of interest this would generate in this area, i would really appreciate any help or feedback in trying to push this project forward and get the site recognised as suitable for kite flying. I hate to be all MI5ish, but i would prefer not to disclose the exact location of the site just yet as the talks with the council are on going, what i really need are suggestions or names of people who would like to use such a site so i can show there is a genuine need and interest in this site being developed. Many Thanks Andy and Rob:) Quote

Shick Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 I am sure if the spot is any good I could ruslte at least 2 or 3 people let alone the SKF! Quote
popeyethewelder Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 how many acres are we talking about... Quote
laurascavies Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 hey i don`t live too far away from donny myself, would be great to be able to come up and fly as its quite close to home. good luck with the council as this is a good thing to give people something to do and as for encouraging newbies, its good as it keeps us young ones occupied and off the streets XD Quote
Dunc Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 At an hour and a half by car it'd probably be a little too far for me to go on a regular basis especially considering that i use an amazing site which is under an hour away but if it's as good as you say people will travel. As has been said have a word with Sheffield Kite Fliers, the ones i've met have been a brilliant bunch and they regularly travel far and wide so Doncaster will hardly be a problem for them. Keep us posted and i may even see you up there one day if all goes well. Good luck. Quote
Zagreth Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Like Dunc says we tend to travel all over the place but are always looking for good sites closer to home. If this site is any good we could bring plenty of people - all insured. We also regularly talk to Sheffield council and have done for years so if you want any help or advice then please get in touch. Good luck. Quote
toska Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 You might want to drop DPKC (Jim) a message as well Quote
Bego Boys Posted October 26, 2009 Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 Thanks for all your thoughs and comment i will respond as i get more info. Thanks again Quote
Bego Boys Posted October 26, 2009 Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 how many acres are we talking about... Not exactly sure as we will have use of a part of the site (upper level) and then if frequented enough the whole area would be opened up, by that i mean cut and prepared. I would guess at 50/60 acres at least. Or in a measurement most understand i would say 12 football pitches or more. Quote
Shick Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 This would be brilliant, give me a shout if you need owt. Quote
Cafe.Racer Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I think I might be one of the 2-3 Shick mentioned - definitely interested. Out of interest, when you get chance, I'd be very interested in the process you went through in talking to the council - I'm interested in doing similar at some local sites. Quote
faceman Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Firstly, congrats on finding a good site, sounds like it has lots of potential. For me personally Donny is a couple of hours away but I regulary travel to north wales to kite so no probs there, secondly another inland kiting area in central england is needed (as airboss is the only other one) so you might want to push that angle to the council, local councils historically get anal with us kiters who use beach locations because of all the dog walkers and general public because of liability insurance etc, so this is another good reason to have a purpose built site, so they may go for it. You have my support dude, so good luck with it all faceman Quote
CWB Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Im sure if you get the site ready, they will come from allover the place. im only 15mins and know a fair few peeps chris Quote
