  4. Thanks all. Will probably give those Jobe's a go, and who knows - could be back to squinting within the month!
  5. Does anyone have a recommendation of suitable sunglasses / eyewear for kiting? It's not the sun that bothers me - as much as the salinity of the water here in Dubai / Abu Dhabi !
  6. g0nz - are you off tue,wed or wed, thu? wind looks good for wed, thu, but tue's not a day to hang the washing out! I could be up for a SUP tue if you've no better plans (& indeed aren't chained to desk)
  7. More from Calshot 10/3 courtesy of James Jagger Photography. He can't have been looking my way when I was doing tricks http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs073.snc3/14103_365899845840_595390840_4037421_3522593_n.jpg http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs073.snc3/14103_365899855840_595390840_4037422_8116615_n.jpg http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs073.snc3/14103_365899870840_595390840_4037423_6135155_n.jpg http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs053.snc3/14103_365899880840_595390840_4037424_6990176_n.jpg
  8. I'm planning on being out at Calshot again today after lunch-ish. What time are you heading out?
  9. You work for an airline, or have amazing check-in flirting capabilities? Winter clothes plus ski gear plus kites all under 20kg and in one bag... That would be impressive!
  10. How do you do that? (the picture, that is)
  11. Two weeks after I lost my board in the Indian Ocean off Durban, I've just got a mail from the shop to say that it has washed up and been handed in. Two weeks! :D Happy :D
  12. I've not seen the guru forecasting in red & pink before I'll be down at the weekend too. Time to find out if I'm a seasonal kiter or not. brr?
  13. Back from Durban and the Middle East. Damn, it's cold here. How thick does the neoprene need to be now? Bramblemet says the water temperature is 13C, which in theory isn't bad, but what's the wind-chill effect?
  14. Ah, yes, I forgot to mention the water. Despite people on the forums waxing lyrical about how you don't need a wetsuit... it was rather a surprise to see that almost everyone is sporting neoprene in springtime... Glad I threw in my spare suit when I packed. Agreed - the Indian ocean in summer is a lovely temperature, but right now at 20degrees, it's similar to the south coast of the UK... Pack a suit for winter/spring!
  15. Back from Durban. Big waves, I take my hat off to the guys that learn there! Durban info: - Ocean2Air is a convenient located shop near La Lucia. Rob & Bruce who run it are sound guys. (I didn't end up visiting Cyclone in the city centre) - Downwinders are totally cool. There's kms of beach to journey along. - Security is not a problem. At kitebeach you can leave your keys with the guys employed by Ocean2Air or Cyclone. They also do a great service of setting up kites while you get changed. They know what they're doing. You can also leave keys behind the counter at Ocean2Air shop if you're further up the beach. - Texwise (Morrisson Street) is the spot to get your kite repaired (oops) - Joop's place does the best steaks. I'm happy to take your pm if your'e heading to Durbs.
  16. Got my flights to Durban - leaving Friday! Warm water, warm weather, waves, here I come Even better, Peter has said he might get kitesurf lessons while we're there
  17. I got the '09 Gul Delta in April when I was learning instead of using the school's gear. It certainly worked, the others on the class looked SO cold. But banish any thoughts of staying 'pretty much dry', even with those velcro straps on the arms and legs so tight you're almost cutting off the circulation, by the end of a session everything inside will be strangely wet. The good news is you don't ever notice the water getting in. As for the car park, if you take a short piece of string and attach it to a roof-rack & then to the zip you can then use it to self-rescue quite easily... I did meet somebody that told me they used this method and got stuck half-way then you'd be at the mercy of the dog-walkers.

Hope you got the keys g0nz0 . Which means that you're about to enter the zone of the power tool fetish. Which means you're at risk of losing kiting time for drilling, sawing & general DIY time. I had a house once, and saw what it was doing to me and gave it up... - & there's no end to it. I mean, my father just bought a tractor and a chainsaw. Now, is that right? Should pensioners be allowed chainsaws?
  19. Extra incentive? How so?
  20. Thanks for the suggestions. Cyclone seems to be quite a mystery - represented in the UK, and sponsored a BKSA event a couple of years ago, but not to be found locally any more?

Mr "I get the keys to my new house on Monday " is going to be so bored through the winter months most of the time, that he'll be glad of the diversion... Calshot has easily paid for itself for me since May , just in saved parking alone - and the fact that there's always a friendly bit of guidance to be had if & when you want it when you come off the water means I've rarely gone anywhere else. It gets my vote, even if there's only half a year left - if you've got thick enough neoprene to see you through, that is.
  22. Just booked my flights to SA for the end of the month staying with in-laws in Kloof, KZN. Just wondeing if it's possible to rent boards in Durbs rather than fight the airlines at check-in & also curious what people do with car keys? - in the kitebag on the beach, like I do in the UK? - a trustworthy car guard that looks after keys? presume the water's lovely, & I can leave all the neoprene gear behind? how's the wind at this time of year? Should I pack the 7m & the 10m? (There's only 60kg of me... I can get going in 8knots on the 10...)
  23. Take a Bluestar 9 to Calshot, and catch up with the guys at Solent Sailboards at the activity centre, or visit their website http://www.solentsailboards.co.uk where you'll find the phone number. Though aimed at the wet end of things, they should be able to help you out with land info too, if you're nice.
  24. Indeed good news. Shout if you need extra hands for moving stuff. I'd offer transport too, but my car's only going to be good for a few small ornaments... Hmm ornaments... You don't strike me as the kind of person that's going to have too many of those?
