Same situation here in Hong Kong, i ordered a 4.7 rage after flying some kitesurfing kites in france. was worried about sizes after i saw my friend who has a Good 15kg on me get launched 10 downwind.
2-3 Knots - The kite is struggling to keep up, the window is tiny, collapses on the turns, your always walking backwards, wishing you had an 18m
If I get 5 knots im happy enough to fly my 4.7 Rage. you start leaning back as the kite comes into the power zone, maybe just starting to skidd, but 1 or 2 steps forward and everything is under control. Excellent to learn in.
10 knots and things start to get more exciting, pulling skidds most of the time while in the power zone, the window is fully open and the kite is nicely powered up.
15 knots and now you really need to start concentrating as flying directly through the power zone is probably going to end badly. I keep the kite to the edge of the window most of the time. Jumps come naturally using the technique illustrated in that flash movie. The kite is REALLY pulling:eek:
20 knots > i bring out my Proteam 8...
This is usualy the case for me, i only weigh 60 kg, but am quite expirenced, IMHO:o .
As for being a learning kite, its excellent. Just this weekend, my friends went to the beach and I brought my rage. they all had a go, and not having any kiting expirence picked it up pretty quicky with some instruction from me. If they got into trouble (eg it soaring into the ground, with me screaming ) they the let go of the handles and the kite completly depowered, no harm done (phew). The wind was less than 5 knots.
I think if you dont get much wind in Belgium you should get the bigger kite, just practice on low wind days untill you get the feel for it. If you ever do get into trouble, maybe in a bad gust, just drop the handles and the kite killers will do the work, its simple and safe. In the long run you will get more for you money than if you buy a bigger one 2 months down the line. I got the 4.7 and I havent looked back.
