sonicseal Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Black Rock Sands in Porthmadog (summer ban). I've just returned from the Outer Hebrides and was blown away with the beach quality on the Isle of Barra. The airport beach has 3 huge runways for the planes, when the wind sock goes down you can blast. Quote
daZZa-S Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Hmmm... not sure about that one. When the beach is good it's good (except for the soft patches that almost break your legs ... but when it does go really **** it's like trying to fly in Baghdad after the Americans have carpet bombed it! Think unfortunitly I have seen more bad conditions than good. Once you get in the high twentys then the sand drys out and you become bogged down to quickly (unless it's ******* down with rain) ..... Flown on better surfaces... Perranporth for one Penhale gets my vote Actually if I had the choice between the two I would pick Penhale. It's only cause Gwithians on my door step that I pick it Well if you'd have gone on saturday you might still believe. lol... only cause you had onshore winds.... still had a big river cut through half the beach Remember last time you was down.... picture reminded me of that song from Sting ... walking on the moon Going to final get down to Watergate bay and Westward Ho this year. Give that a go Penhale has more useable width and you can fly the kite nearer to the cliffs as they are mainly sand dunes so maximising the space. Plus you get a bit of thermal activity with the huge dunes. Great place and you get the joy of watching the paragliders on a calm day:) Remember when I used to ride bikes down there because of the hard surface years back... why don't I fly there more often! Quote
Tjah1087 Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 What, you can ride the runways? Yeah, IIRC the runways are on the beach, and being so remote they only have a few planes every day. They don't mind to much when they aren't flying I *think*. I would check before planning a trip there however. Quote

Loads of our mob made personal top speeds (one pilot hit 57.7mph ). Best session I've ever had, still makes me grin thinking about it. And that river - ended up in it so deep that my front bigfoot was submerged, everything saturated :D Quote

No 5km rules there You can go inside and politlely ask whats due in/out. The biggest and hardest beach I ever seen. Please observe this simple rule and stay off the beach if the sock is up or it will soon get us kiters banned there. Amazing to see the planes land and take off on the beach Quote
gunner221 Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Wales is getting some good shouts. What's the most consistent beach in Wales closest to Northampton? I used to surf alot at Rest Bay, Porthcawl and can do that in about 2.5hrs on a good run which is fine for a day trip. South West is too far for the day travelling from landlocked Northampton. Yer Wales is looking good not sure which beach tho, as you say most are to far for the day Quote
minidrummer Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 dont know bout that but newgale bay of the pembrookshire cost in wahles is feking brilliant campsight road beach lovely Ash xx Quote

Eddieo Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Hi my parents are renting a house near St.Austell that i can go to in the summer, is there anywhere good near by to landboard? Quote

louisemarson Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Fraisy in a South Easterly- Dee I just stopped typing and started drewling for 20 mins after reading that! Mind you, you can't beat Black Rock for that view.... http://www.kite-fantastic.co.uk/community/gallery/albums/album36/Black_Rock_Feb_07_068_Medium.sized.jpg Quote
Themmings Posted May 21, 2007 Author Report Posted May 21, 2007 OK - first stop is going to be South Wales. So with this in mind, can all you Welsh flyers recommend the most consistent beach (wind wise) closest to Northampton? That means I'm looking to travel the least 'West' along the South coast of Wales (if possible). Ta. Then I'll work my way in another direction; maybe across and up the East coast after that. Quote
kite crazy Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 must say the ho! is well worth visiting, i went last october and loved it so much we're going back Quote
wenglish Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 restbay is good but the tide comes in quick, aberaon is super when the waves have pounded the sand flat, the beaches around the gower are supurb and even in an offshore llangennith is good. Quote

Cheers Wenglish. So what's my best bet - taking into consideration distance (closest) and consistency. Quote
Pablo Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 For land, Seaside Oregon, For Surf, The Gorge Washington, The Squamish Spit, British Columbia Both the surf spots have a solid 20+mph wind all summer if the sun's out. Quote
big-jon Posted May 21, 2007 Report Posted May 21, 2007 Got to say this - Ainsdale for all activities - in a NW it is perfect My other favourite beach is Pendine absolutely awesome!! Quote

Maro Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 I agree with Wenglish, Aberavan is probably the closest, but for the sake of another half hour you could go the the Gower. Hillend campsite at Llangenith is nice, and only seperated to the beach by the dunes. Also there are other beaches around to suit other wind dirrections. There are restrictions at Llangenith but you still get about two miles of beach to play with. Quote
