ANGELZ Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Ive been asking myself why I dont wear a helmet and why only a small percentage of kiters I know(err actually, only know 1) dont wear 1 either. So I thought I wud find out why the majority ov us dont. Is it..... 1) Because it doesnt look good 2) None of my mates do:confused: 3) Im so damnn good I dont need one;) 4) Its not a dangerous sport so why wud I need a helmet:eek: So, why is it???? Quote
northern jim Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 None of the above. If I'm not wearing one it's because I'm in what I see as safe conditions, in which case all a helmet does is restrict my vision and movement. Quote
Kiteboyza Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 You missed out.......because I am a dickhead....I would vote for that one Quote

martiin Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 I just dont feel comftable wearing the one I have and im not prepared to pay 80+ quid for one I will feel comftable in. at the moment Ive never taken a really hard slam in 2 years of kiting on land and water so i chose to simply not to wear one. alastairy2k Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 What about the option of: I appreciate the risk but it's my decision, it's a free world, I minimise risk and if I f*** up that's my fault. If I wanted a low risk sport I'd have taken up bowls. By minimising risk I mean not wearing a board leash, not putting up a 12m in 30+mph wind, instinctivly knowing your safety system, not trying out new stuff in onshore wind when you're close to shore, and launch with your kite at the water's edge. I sail with 20+ guys, we all live minutes from the beach, have sailed together for 3/4 years and all minimise risk as above. No accidents so far. At the weekend when we get invaded we see people using board leashes, people putting up 12ms in 30+mph, people who don't know how to use their safety (some don't even use kite leashes), people trying to jump in onshore wind a few feet from the water's edge, and launching a few hundred metres from the water and walking, kite above head, to the water. But don't worry, 'cos these are the people that wear helmets so they're safe. Quote
ANGELZ Posted September 29, 2006 Author Report Posted September 29, 2006 Alot ov U guys R on the land, I wear a full face helmet when Im buggyin but yet I dont wear a helmet on the water. Alot ov the land kiters I know do wear helmets when the conditions are hard or they R doin crazy stuf but the kitesurfers dont. Quote
northern jim Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Same. Lid for landboarding, not usually for kitesurfing. Dick.tracy Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 I make a choice - scudding around on sand = no helmet Thrashing my buggy on the airfield = helmet, gloves, big boots, knee and elbow pads. It is an informed choice for each person to make in the circumstances. I have never needed(ie hit my head) to wear: A cycle helmet, but have worn one, A motorcycle helmet, but have worn one(OK so its the law, but not offroad on private land) A Ballistic Kevlar Helmethttp://community.flexifoil.com/images/icons/firing.gif(in the Gulf/Northern Ireland) Just be sensible and safe. Dr-Manic Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Ok so you get a lot of numptys at the beach who havent got a clue but have the safety they will learn as we all did as to all you SAFE People who are expert kiters and weather readers your right its your head and your right to break it By the way when you smash your skull and become a vegtable you will most likley end up in a disabilties trust home like the one my wife works in infact your stupidity may even contribute to my kite fund as my good wife likes to buy me kites it will also reduce the number of people on the beach so i get new kites + more beach you eat through a straw and dribble a lot Quote
Zippy Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Just for the record i never had a bad fall in my time as a kiter (6mths or so) but when i went to launch my new 10m access one day i had the mishap of getting a foot caught on a rock or something whilst doing the preverbial slide upon launching the kite. This ended up with me twisting as the kite lifted me off the ground, from here i landed down on my head, saw black for a couple of seconds as my head was bashed fore and aft in the commotion, i instantly had a pretty huge headache, i could not shake my head for over two weeks, sneezing hurt and i probably had whiplash and concusion too. thank god I WAS wearing my helmet because there is no doubt in my mind it would of been rather nasty had i not bothered or tried to look cool. We all look back on it and laff now but thats why we fly safe and wear our lids. ill always be ready for the next mishap and only hope any injuries are superficial Quote
