Mark_Sims Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Possibly, but they have also had some light winds. I only got out on my 14m Boxer on the very first and very last days. The rest of the time I was on smaller C kites. Mark Quote
Big Damo Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 I was at Ras Sudr with wave riders in April... mostly used my 15m Firestorm. Should be windier in summer. I was there with 3 others and they were learning so I had the bay to myself. It was great. The kite helpers are fantastic and the two instructors very good with radio links and lots of patience... so I'd recommend it for beginners... take wetsuit shoes though Quote
kiteingcolin Posted August 4, 2006 Author Report Posted August 4, 2006 no no, take it, the wind can do the full spectrum, 0-45 mph in any week, nothing is out of the question, leave it behind and that would have been your most used kite, sods law! Quote
noelpilot83 Posted August 5, 2006 Report Posted August 5, 2006 Hi Joff, i feel your pain, my mate J and I agonized for ages on where to go! All thanks got to go to colin for his help and patient advice!! Eventually we chose El Gouna, some good spots, initial concern over the tides from what we've read but no worries on that front, you can always get to water nice cross shore, three schools to choose from!, we're both at the mid stage, can't quite get upwind but are nearly there and didn't want to be in complete learner territory! waveriders are brilliant, can't rate them highly enough, especially Luke Denny. worth giving him a call and having a chat with him. looked at ras sudr and it looked sweet but we wanted a little bit more there!! good luck Noel Quote
joff Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 I am now booked in to paradise in Ras Sudr, of early september to enjoy some sun and hopefully find a bit more wind than there was in kent this weekend! Thanks for all the advice, I'll post on how me and maya get on. J Quote
Lord T Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Timing is great winds are good until november, Quote
Sandslide1 Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Having been in the past at El Gouna and Menaville, both times with Waveriders, I decided to try the Abu Soma Intercontinental and the set up here is worth the journey. There are two kite centres, one run by mark warner holidays and the other by surf motion. The MW one you have to go out on a boat, the SM one, just fall out of bed and wander over, so that won hands down. At the other two places I was struggling with water start, however after two days here playing in the big lagoon they have I'm already starting to cut upwind and thats on a 7m waroo. It's been pretty steady force 5-6 both days. The lagoon is about two feet deep, and whilst tidal, beginners, etc, can still play in it for four or five hours and theres always the deep stuff as well. When tide is out, deeper water is just at the far side of a sand bank. There's plenty of space for everyone, tho only one other brit here at the moment, its mainly germans. The SM centre is well set up, 40 odd euros for stowing and launching etc for a week and a rescue boat and the local helpers are switched on, though haven't seen anyone rescued yet as its a big area and plenty places to land downwind if urgently needed to. Just to put in context for the location. I spent a week with CNS last year and on the boat en route to where they kite, they pass the intercontinental's spot, which is far better than anywhere else used by anyone else on this stretch of coast. If can afford it, its excellent and other halfs will enjoy the hotel. Only downside I've seen so far, is the nightlife is limited. Quote

marypoppins Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 I'm looking to go to Abu Soma with Mark Warner at the end of Sept and been reading Kitingcolin's comments about the "kiting off a raft" scenario and the Surfmotion centre alternative. Rang up Mark Warner (not the man himself I suspect) and the chap told me that kiting was now from off the beach slightly further down from the windsurfing sector. You can also use your own kit as long as a disclaimer is signed and boat cover is included in the holiday price. Kit hire is £40 a day apparently (according to the website) whereas the Surfmotion centre is quoting 235 Euros for the week; so a bit cheaper. Is Mark Warner's kit available for hire by the hour I wonder, so to fit in around other activities and wind conditions etc? Can anyone help me out on this info who's actually been there? Quote
kiteingcolin Posted August 25, 2006 Author Report Posted August 25, 2006 sandslide1 has just got back, i was talking to him this week and can't wait to get there myself, send him a pm, or wait for him to see this , he will! Quote
