Hey guys, i have just purchased a board and a harness, but unfortunatly do not have enough money yet for a kite, lol im 16. So i was wondering for now if there were any places in melbourne that i can hire a kite or something?

Thanks

Not sure if SHQ 'hire' kites as such... but they definitely have demo gear you can try. I wouldn't recommend demo'ing gear to learn as it'll get very expensive very quickly if you break it.

Hey guys, im looking at completeing my basic lessons, and then going out buying a harness and a boar, and then hiring the kite for a bit until i can afford it aswell. Where do i hire, and how much, thanks.

The general convention isn't usually to 'hire' kites out, so much as to 'demo' a kite you may be interested in buying, from what I know it is free but you are responsible for any damage sustained, talk to the local kiters and retailers and get an idea of what kite is right for you then demo them and make up your own mind.:D

even if you buy the kite and a harness and "demo" a board if you need to or borrow a friends if you can, yould be less likely to damage a board than a kite and there hard to loose at hampton cause thel probably wash ashore before green point... hopefully

I would be very surprised if a shop would offer demo gear to someone just starting out. To be honest, I don't think you will be able to tell the difference between one kite and another without a year's experience. Don't risk a $1800 bill should you destroy someone elses gear. Your progress will be frustratingly slow on borrowed gear.

If you're only 16 and can't afford the gear get your dad into the sport and use his gear or borrow the money from parents. Tell him if you weren't kiting you would probably be doing drugs. You can get good second hand kites cheapish (12 months old stuff for under $1000 this time of year).

Sorry to say, this is not a cheap sport.

Younggun987,

Don't forget to get some lessons. Can't stress this high enough. You don't want to end up on the 6o'clock news. I am perhaps a bit of a miser, think I can always nut it out myself ---- wrong. Get lessons from the proffessionals, make it is a safe sport for you and your bystanders. I got my two lessons from Kite Power in Geelong, plus some self learning in between lessons, plus wind speed restriction advice from my instructor after the first lesson. There would be instructors closer to you as well.

Yes, go and get Dad all fired up.

Awesome Lachy ..... tell you what ... If you ever head over to Brizvegas I will personally take you to all 3 of our secret spots ... lol, (there are a few more than that) but I will be happy to show you round.

Your Dad is right ... get the exam in the bag before you get the kite out, but when you do, Enjoy :D

Dude how did you go? Due to lack of wind on my first lesson I jumped the beginner learner kite straight to a big girl and found i flew that pretty good but had my second lesson not about a week and a half ago and flew it like shit in the body drag stage and aint feeling that confident about getting up on the board in the next.

Who was your teacher?

Frogggstra; no idea what you're on about there... but Younggun... how much do you weigh? Did you really buy a 14m as your first kite? You'd have to be well over 100kg for us to recommend that size as your first kite...!

Also, a clarification on hiring - no shops i know of really hires kites out.

The 'demoing' of kites ONLY applies to experienced riders. If you want to demo a kite when learning, then you'll need to get a lesson, and ask to use a particular kite.

If cost is really an issue, then you could buy a super cheap kite (they exist from about $200 complete); we could even consider trading that super cheap kite back after several weeks (if the condition is still very good). So in the end, you wouldn't loose any more money than it would cost you to hire it. Of course, a few conditions would apply.

I know you've got your kite now; but just wanted to clarify that point for anyone else interested in hiring.

I think he said he weighed in at mid-90kg's from his 'what gear to buy' thread.

14m is alot of kite for your first, but the lads at RPS would've (should've?) talked this through with him. Atleast he'll be out there on the mild Melbourne seabreeze's whilst i'm sitting on the beach bitching and moaning about not enough wind.

Youngun ... I have a 14m EH Ripper ... I am no lenton the looper but I can fly my kites. I weight 70 kg @ the moment.

The 14 ONLY comes out in 10 - 20 knots .... it gets me planing at 10k and it becomes interesting above 15k.

Point being .... 14 is a BIG kite that can generate a lot of pull ... be weary.
