Chest and elbow protection. worth it?

I got a friend who said he can sell me some motorbike chest and elbow protection(for buggying of course). is it useful? http://www.sportsnmore.com/lacrosse/images/stx/protect02/exosp.jpg something like this one here. I mean how often will I land on my chest/back? tho it doesn't take more than one bad fall. so what do you think? is it useful? I already got a helmet and kneepads and stuff like that.

Depends on how much money he wants for it. I always use elbow and knee pads but haven't got chest/back guards. What you need to remember is that it's not that difficult to reach speeds of 40 mph or so, if you loose it or something goes wrong at that speed you'll need all the protection you can get.

for that price.. hell yeah... you might not fall on your back or chest... but all you need is one OBE and then have the buggy to flip back onto you.. across you back and boom.. no spine.. you wear a helmet to protect your brain.. well spines need care too..

Hi Anc,

Where did you get the picture of the body armour?. Going on the length of the shoulder protection it looks like it may fit with a harness. Have looked at a few & they have all been too long as they protect the base of the spine or too restrictive on body movement.

Think you may find it useful, I wear a helmet , knee & elbow pads which have all come to the rescue but have have landed on my shoulders twice with the result of three months physio on each one. Wouldn't of minded so much if i'd done them at the same time so I missed less buggying!.

this isn't the exact protection but I'm gonna get something very alike to this one. I'll try it on to see if I can use a harness with it.

good point tho, I haven't thought about the harness thingy.

Hi Anc,

Know your getting something different just wondered what make the one in your picture is & where you can get it.

Been reading about gixer which makes you think about getting one with hip/coccyx protection & putting your harness on too. Trouble is you'd need something like a v-flex 2 to fit into, have enough trouble fitting in my Flexi sport with a bump n jump harness on as it is!.

Thanks anc,

Hadn't thought of lacrosse so gives me something new to look into. I want to have a go at racing next year & have heard it can get a bit nasty, people ramming you etc. Perhaps I should go for something from the american football section, there's some really mad stuff there, few Ben Hur spikes on the buggy & I'll be sorted :)

Hi anc,

Coming from a motorcycle background and currently still in a wheelchair at the moment from my accident with a kite 5 weeks ago (see links below), I cannot stress how important protection is. The problem is though, what is the right protection and in what use will it be used. Kites are getting better, buggy speeds are getter higher with practice and so on. With the protection you have shown below which comes from a motor cross back ground, you will find that you will restrict your movement and also elbow movement will be drastically reduced. Personally, when in a buggy, I would wear a Helmet, knee and elbow protection, wrist protectors and a sturdy pear of high ankle Merrels. All of these can be purchased from any creditable kite shop except the Merrels. Best place for looking for these is a hiking shop or the likes. The other benefit of the Merrels is that they are waterproof as well. Chest and back armour is another cup of tea totally. I have thought about this in the past and am currently still toying with the idea subject to getting out of this wheelchair. You can buy lightweight general use upper body armour from a lot of places and you need not spend a fortune either. Check out the link below for ideas.

At the end of the day anc the choice is yours, but anybody can be a fool trying to look cool, but not wearing protection is asking for devastation.

Keep safe all, and wear that protection, it may look silly and you could be the only person wearing it, but it has saved me from worse damage than what I am in. Video and Pictures here.
