Bushman Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Can anyone tell me if buggying on woolacombe beach has been banned or not. Quote
Sparhawk Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 Shamelessly adding my post to this thread as I need to know for next week too :-S Quote
jocook Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 I was at Woolacombe yesterday. The beach is far to busy during the day to contemplate buggying!! I saw a power kite on the beach after 5pm. As far as I know buggies are banned for the Summer Quote
jocook Posted July 23, 2003 Report Posted July 23, 2003 It seems that Saunton has relaxed their ban if you walk way up the beach past the red pole. Westward ho ! allows buggying but again the beach is very busy. Best to go out when low tide is in the evening. we were there 10 days ago on a sunday, crap buggy session, too many people and kids. Gave up and took the kites into the sea instead Quote
Simon22597 Posted July 24, 2003 Report Posted July 24, 2003 This has been discussed before, I think it was last month. If you so a search you should be able find out a bit more. I think the outcome was that you have you go up past Mill Rock to buggy. I'm not 100% certain but I have been down a few times this summer and one week they say I can only fly the kite, and the next they don't seem to care if I use the mountain board or not! There is a kite shop in Woolacombe now so pop in there and hopefully the guys should be able to let you know what the situation is. Hope this helps. Simon Quote
Joe90 Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 I was down at Woolacombe a couple of weeks ago. The guys who run the beach seem to be ok about kite flying on the beach. There are signs at the car parks saying buggying is banned but If you speak to the guys they say officially it's banned but if you go past the rocks and you don't bother anyone and no one complains you'll be left alone. The general rule is use some common sense. If the beach is busy and you are ripping about they will have no choice to enforce the ban. The guy I spoke to in the kite shop down there was cool and repeaed what the guys on the gate said. Beaware that at the weekends this beach is very busy and you will be hard pressed to find a place to buggying without annoying someone. Best advice is to go in the evening or early morning. It's a good beach with an onshore wind. Have fun Joe Quote
jameshcox Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 The guy from Parkin Estates I met last week seemed to think that buggying is banned from the whole of Woolacombe beach. But he also hinted that South fo Wolf rock you'd be OK. This is pretty much as other contributors have confirmed. I only got hassled by Parkin estates' staff when I ended a long downwind run right on the beach at Woolacombe. Before flaming me, it was raining and blowing F4, so there were only a few hardy surfers at that end of the beach. The middle bit of the beach is usually quiet enough to fly and ride with no hassle. If it was busy, I'd not go out anyway, the last thing I want to do is break some kid's leg with my board... Quote
Jossy Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 I've just stayed down in Woolacombe. i think they dont do any about buggies, i spoke to the guy in the kite shop and he said there was a ban but nothing can be done about it as there are any perminent signs. I just waited till the coast guards had gone, and and all was ok. The wind wasn't up to much tho, apart from one day when about 10 kites turned up me included. Woolacombes greqt hope you enjoy it! hope this helps Joss Quote
Russel Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 I was down at Woolacoombe last week, basically Parkin Estate like to see your insurance details, there is a ban but if you ask nicley they may let you go on the beach past Mill house Rock, I was looking at Puttsborough beach (far end of Woolacombe) no signs but the beach is privatley owned but does get quite late afternoon and if the tide is right loads of space. Croyde beach was ok nobody said anything and i was down there several times duriong the week around about 6 - 9pm loadss of power kiters about. As for Saunton went on there about 6.30 am til 9.00am and got asked to leave, evidently the £2000 fine applies, they are in the process of prosecuting some one even though a few locals go right up the far end on the beach. As for the life guards they only have control of the water not the beach that's the land owners.management companies. Hope this helps. Parkin Estates are very friendly and if you talk to them they may help you out. BUT PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF US ALL IF THEY ASK YOU TO LEAVE DO SO NICLEY SO WE DON@T LOOSE THE SITE FOR GOOD. common sense I know but not always put into practice when your high after a good session. Problems at Saunton were caused partly by attendees at an event being rude and obnoxious, offending other beach users......long story short buggy ban. Rant over but use your heads we want more buggy sites not less. Quote
Match Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 I was in that area last month and got turned down everywhere I went except for Westward Ho! Was staying in Croyde and on asking at Ruda reception (where I was staying and the beach owners) they 'asked' me not to buggy. Static would be OK. Woolacombe was too busy the couple of times I went over and there were signs enforcing a ban. Saunton......despite seeing buggiers one day from the Saunton-Croyde road, the next day they were banned????? I know that lessons are held for kitesurfing on Saunton, doe sthis stretch t buggies? Westward Ho! - Miles of sand, good wind and nice stones to put in your garden. Those who know will know. Quote
Letsgokite Posted August 13, 2003 Report Posted August 13, 2003 My Uncle lives in Ilfracombe (5 mins from Saunton , Woolacombe and Croyde) I'm going down for a session Late August. He said Buggying is Banned on Woolacombe until yo go past the rocks when it then becomes National Trust Land (Go here). Buggying is also Banned on Saunton Sands But thinks if your careful you could get away with it at the far end. Quote
Jossy Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 at saunton (or what ever its called) it is only banned up to the high tide point as know one can own the land below high tide. Quote
jameshcox Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 Weeeeeel, not quite The intertidal is crown property, and AFAICS there are two possibilities a) Crown estate leases the land to private owner. Though if anyone tried to fine me I'd be happy to go to court over it/ b) Council has powers to enact byelaws over conduct on the beach down to the low water mark. Fines for breacjing the byelaws are low, but still give you a record. Now, the b*gger of it is, finding out what if any byelaws actually apply on any particular beach, or finding out if the crown estate has leased the intertidal to the owners of the Saunton Hotel. I'm actually in correspondence with North Devon DC's legal dept over b). If/when I get a useful answer, I will share. Quote
anc Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 how can anyone ban buggying? I don't get it. cos where I live there are max. 5 people who kitebuggy and that isn't a problem to the beaches. but still. it doesn't harm anyone(exept the driver:)). And what happens if you buggy in a place where you are not allowed? cops come running after you? Quote
sigo Posted August 16, 2003 Report Posted August 16, 2003 Just come back from woolacombe, saunton etc. There is a summer ban at woolacombe...and quite rightly so. The whole beach was packed last week from woolacombe all the way up to Putsboro'. Same ol' story super 10's whizzing over families and kids.. accident waiting to happen. Saunton is banned but there seems to be a bit of a relaxed atmosphere, I buggied up the top end near crow point. There is a rumour that Christies are prosecuting someone ... no more details though. I also understand that Saunton is one of the only private beaches in the UK... a gift from the Crown for services rendered in the war... if this is so the mean high tide arguement does not apply to this beach. Westwood Ho! is your best bet: no buggy ban... BUT dogs are banned in certain areas... ha ha ha ha. Quote
air Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 Just got back from North Devon where I spent the last 2 weeks spent on Woolacombe Beach. I had no idea there was a ban on, I was told there were signs at the popular end of the beach but there are soooo many access points its easy to miss. I bought a FF airdeck to get the hang of landboarding from that FF dealer in Braunton. I had been flying my blade 4.9, my son has a blade 2, I got the board out and withing 1 hr I was asked to stop. I was beyound the rock and was no danger to anyone. The guy who pulled up next to me in his 4x4 explained the ban covers the whole beach all years round. x2 other buggies were also spoken to. whilst I was there on this particular day. After about 5pm a buggy was zipping in between kids etc near where I was sitting and I could hardly believe this guy. I felt like having a word and maybe I should have. I was told to go to Saunton where there is a ban but they turn a blind eye!!! This was the official guy who asked me to stop landboarding on Woolacombe. regards Quote
Russel Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 chatting to one of the wardens at Sauton he did mention he'd like to ban dogs and let the buggies back as they were less hassel lol Quote
jocook Posted August 17, 2003 Report Posted August 17, 2003 at last..... a warden with some common sense!! Quote
