Sue H Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 I have some time at the end of October to take off work. The idea of going somewhere warm appeals for a real holiday vibe. If its a rock climbing destination too, even better. It would be convenient to combine the two sports, although taking both sets of kit through the airport is a bit of a pain, unless it's possible to hire kites. Apologies if this subject has been done to death, I'm new here.. Quote
Spangle12 Posted September 20, 2013 Report Posted September 20, 2013 I was also thinking of exactly the same thing. I've been thinking of going away end of October but wouldn't have a clue where would be good (and relatively cheep). It would be a pain in the arse to take climbing gear through an airport as well as kiting gear, unless you went deep water soloing. then all you need is a sea cliff, deep water and your climbing shoes :-) Quote
John.B Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 El Medano Tenerife - kite surfing & climbing 30 minutes away Quote
g0nz01599968659 Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 Hey Sue, Are you going on Rob's trip to El Medano in March? Dan Quote
lives2fly Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 Nowhere nearby unfortunately. plenty of sun in spain, morroco, fuerta, etc but the wind is hit or miss in October. Brazil is probably your safest bet for wind and sun - or Maui... Quote
Sue H Posted September 23, 2013 Author Report Posted September 23, 2013 Cheers for the replies so far. Hmm Hunstanton could fit the bill as far as budget concerns, but can you magic in some sun & palm trees too? Guess the Canary Isles dont have reliable enough wind to book a holiday solely devoted to kite surfing in October..unless someone can comment otherwise. I was out in Tenerife last Christmas, (mostly climbing) but very obviously it was not the season for kiting.. Guessing the exotic loations like Brazil or Maui will be a bit out of my price bracket. Hi Dan, Could well be interested in El Medano, Sue Quote
mick Posted September 23, 2013 Report Posted September 23, 2013 Hmm Hunstanton could fit the bill as far as budget concerns, but can you magic in some sun & palm trees too? Sue I think rain and Oak trees could be arranged. Seriously tho. Cape Verde, Boa Vista North coast only unless you have a death wish is pretty good for Winter wind and sun. Cuba, if I remember but I think Feb to April is the best. Oh and Cape Verde has loads of rocks. Thats all it has. Quote
lives2fly Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 There are palm trees in the Hebrides - like 6 of them or something and its almost always windy. Its not warm though. bring your 5/3 wetsuit There is also some incredible sea cliff climbing in Lewis - Particularly if you climb E2+ but plenty in low and mid grades too + some inland stuff but not much in the way of roadside single pitch. 77W Posted September 26, 2013 Report Posted September 26, 2013 Well if cheap is the priorty I would think there would be some bargain holidays in Egypt right now, how safe it is out there is anyones guess although the Sharm area seems to be less affected by the trouble. Cheap & guaranteed wind is a hard combo to get Quote
Cypher Posted September 27, 2013 Report Posted September 27, 2013 Hi, what's your definition of cheap ?? Other than the flight (approx £700) Brazil is cheap when you are out there. Closer to home, next would be Cape Verde, personally, I know Feut is hosting the world champs mid Oct, and you can get flat(ish) water on the east coast and waves on the west. Other than that, Tarifa (tends to be V busy) else UK does tend to be windy in Oct (but cold). I lost interest in Egypt a few years back with the unreliable wind, since then Cape Verde or Brazil any day... Quote
andrew pattullo Posted September 27, 2013 Report Posted September 27, 2013 is a there a club holiday thing going on here??? got my passport Quote
Sue H Posted September 30, 2013 Author Report Posted September 30, 2013 Thanks for the entertaining replies. Almost too much choice. By cheap, I was thinking more of the bargain break all inclusive sub-£500 sort of thing. Probably wishful thinking. I'm hoping to consolidate my first years kiting in some reliable conditions as progress in the UK has been rather slow with the limited amount of time I can get onto the water. Any particular areas renowned for decent instruction or is it best to just hook up with a bunch of other kiters with more experience? Maybe taking pot luck in the UK will be a whole lot cheaper and just as productive if there's wind Quote
mick Posted October 4, 2013 Report Posted October 4, 2013 Sue, seriously I think there are some great instructors in the UK. Obviously it depends where you live and of course, its totally weather dependant. I must admit to seeing what a decent weeks kiting made to a mate of mine. Where do you live Sue or more to the point, at what level are you? Quote
