The Geoff Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Took a mate yesterday (he'll remain nameless, but he's lurking on here;)), with the vague intention of getting him up on the water for the first time. He'd had lots of experience with small foils (Bullet, Sting etc) and a bit of time on LEIs, including being able to body-drag upwind. We'd been out a few times before to finally get him up but the conditions just weren't playing ball. Pretty weird yesterday too. Nuking when we got there (30+) then died right off to about 12mph for half an hour. I got the 12m up and had a play, handed it over to Nameless and he had time for about 1 attempt before it really picked up, so I took my kite back. Honestly, it was concerns for a newbie's safety, not that I wanted to find the top end on it... Broraboyan was on hand with a 9m Neutron though, I was really impressed by how well it just sat at the edge of the window resting on the water when you wanted to fiddle with footstraps and stuff. And after a couple of face plants and maybe ten false-starts Nameless is up and cruising...well...sort of. But a couple of really good runs were had before it got proper nuking again and we all packed up I'm nearly as chuffed as he is, we've been trying this on and off for about a year now! Thanks to everyone else at Ardersier yesterday, top bunch of blokes who were keeping half an eye on us Quote
The Geoff Posted September 2, 2013 Author Report Posted September 2, 2013 Yup And yes, I've been constantly bugging him to take some proper lessons from a qualified instructor. Quote

The Geoff Posted September 2, 2013 Author Report Posted September 2, 2013 The insurance companies would beg to differ To give you all an idea, it takes longer to get to our nearest school (Aberdeen) from here than it does from Gatwick. Quote
Ozzie35 Posted September 2, 2013 Report Posted September 2, 2013 Hey The Geoff you would be good instructor then Quote
mick Posted September 2, 2013 Report Posted September 2, 2013 I have a good friend who shall also remain nameless. We'll just call him Mr.B and I will be so chuffed when he gets up and going. Quote

The Geoff Posted September 2, 2013 Author Report Posted September 2, 2013 Hey The Geoff you would be good instructor then Funny you should say that. I'd be helping him out on and off for the best part of the year, up steps broraboyan, five minutes, bam, he's up. I reckon it's like jam jar lids, I did all the loosening. Quote
broraboyan Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 That's kind of you to say that Geoff but I'm only a beginner, so it's still fresh in the memory of what to do and the kite was perfectly powered and that makes a big difference too . Quote
The Geoff Posted September 3, 2013 Author Report Posted September 3, 2013 There's probably a lot of truth in that - I've been trying to go from sitting to surfing nice and slowly so he can see what I'm doing, but it's actually pretty tricky, you've got to ignore the muscle memory that makes it easy and try to do it like a beginner again. I'll be heading to Portmohomack this afternoon, about 2ish. Quote
