k3tamin Posted September 18, 2012 Report Posted September 18, 2012 Hi bit new to this so forgive me... I landboard and am looking to get into kite surfing, not sure the same rules apply for land and water... Done a bit of google'in and have more questions than I started with, read about aspect ratio, devide weight by 7 and so on.. So need a bit of help really as setups are a bit pricey and I'm a sucker Looking for a two kite quiver I weigh 92-94kg I'm pretty good at kiteboarding(mainly ozone fixed bridles) but totally new to kitesurfing Honestly I'm lazy and looking for an easy park and ride kite...(don't want to have to worry in hard) Any suggestions or pointers from you folks would be great, I bought a cheap best yarga 13m and got on great with that on land.. Been looking at catalyst and bandits as reviews seem to be good.... Quote
Andy-j Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Get a kitesurfing lesson, possibly go 1-2-1 since you have so much previoius kiting experience. Have a shot of the school kites and figure out what you like/dislike about them and use that as a benchmark.? 94Kg's is a whole lot of laddie to haul about so you'll be looking at 13-15 as your big kite and a 9-10 as your higher wind kite. probably 14/10 then you can add a 7 for the nukin days once you get the experience. shemKSW Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Id agree, Im 88 kilos, and altho I use an 11 as my usual kite I have a 14 for days under 15 knots. and a 9 for pretty much every thing else. Id say 14 and 10 woudl do you for pretty much everything. or spread it a bit and go 14-9? Also depends n the board you have and usual riding spot. Maybe think about ozone instincts if you like Ozones anyway Quote
cowboy54 Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 going down the pimping and them that you got on with the yarga (older kite thouch) You could do the majority of days in the UK with the following sizes for Best kites; Kahoonav3/v4: 13.5m/11.5m and a 7.5m TS: 14m or 12m and an 8m GP (yarga replacemet):13m/11m and 7m Reason Ive put down 2 sizes for the larger kites is that the low end on these kites is only a couple of knots difference. Only speaking for Best as I know their wind ranges from personal experience Quote
ianscott9 Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 Looking for a two kite quiver I weigh 92-94kg I'm a couple of kg heavier than you and use a 12m & 9m Bandit quiver, with a 136cm X 40cm board. Works for me ! Before that I had 12m & 9m Blade Triggers. Quote
russ_kent Posted September 24, 2012 Report Posted September 24, 2012 I'm the same weight and I get away with a 9 and a 14 (switchblades) in 95% of conditions. Later you might want to consider adding a 7 for the stupid days (I just have) Quote
k3tamin Posted September 24, 2012 Author Report Posted September 24, 2012 Thanks guys for your help, being a petite xl threw sizing out for me a bit. Yes a 1 2 1 would be a good idea-try a few kite types and see which boards would go best with them. Problem with reading reviews/marketing of kites is they all seem so good Would like to find a few that can stretch as much as possible over wind ranges... Ozone instinct kite slipped by me, will need to have a closer look at that. Yes the Yarga is a whole load of joy( I got it as a cheapy instead of ruining a new lei) Will see if I can give the other Best kites a go. Bandits and switchblades seem to have great reviews, are they worth considering as beginner kites? Thanks once again for the replies to this thread, much appreciated. Quote

k3tamin Posted September 25, 2012 Author Report Posted September 25, 2012 That would be great cheers, I lurk around North Devon, mostely Sandy Mouth bay Quote
Maro Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 I'm on bandit 5s and think anybody would get on great with them, loads o grunt, plenty of depower, fast and responsive. I rekon 11m and 8m would have you covered. At about 70kg I use 9m from 15knots to about 25. I have 11m and 7m for either side of the 9m but these don't get a whole lot of use. Quote
jibbond3579 Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 Bandits have been my learner kites and are awesome. So much range, loads of grunt for their size and handle gusts really well. Another vote for F-one here. I have Bandit 4 - 12m/9m/7m quiver and ride 9m in winter most frequently and 12m for the summer. I'm around 65kg on a twintip. I wish I had a 14m so would prob advise going for something like that and maybe a 9 or 10m. Quote
plummet Posted September 26, 2012 Report Posted September 26, 2012 If you like the ozone brand then look at the catalyst. Quote
k3tamin Posted September 27, 2012 Author Report Posted September 27, 2012 Cheers for the input, looks like quiet a few people are happy with bandits... I'll have to give them a go along with catalysts as well. I've been reading up on wainman as well, anyone had a good play with them? Quote
LHF-scottishrep Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Clocking in at 101pies I kite from 17-40mph on my 10m Bandit 3 on a 130x41 board. Awesome kite compared to the Ozone C4 so much low down grunt. One negative I have is you need help to land either be that friend or sand bag. Quote
ianscott9 Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 One negative I have is you need help to land either be that friend or sand bag. Not sure about Bandit 3's, but I often self land my Bandit 5's with no problems! Quote
balugh Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 A couple of North Rebels will do pretty much everything you're looking for (and more)... Sizes...9 and 12 will cover most of the normal stuff in the UK for a guy your size on a medium(ish) board. Don't get too small a board straight away...especially if you want to cruise around. 137 (or bigger) x 40 (or bigger) at least. Yes people learned on and do ride smaller boards but you need to lay down a lot more power and that does not appear to be what you're looking for. You'll enjoy the ride more if you're not struggling too much. Quote

k3tamin Posted September 29, 2012 Author Report Posted September 29, 2012 Not had a look at the north kites, which types would you recommend? Yes will be going for a larger size board, are there any drawbacks with larger boards- do smaller ones turn better? Quote

Yes will be going for a larger size board, are there any drawbacks with larger boards- do smaller ones turn better? Swings and roundabouts on board sizes...you get up riding and go upwind easier on a slightly bigger board. You can ride toeside etc and some good freestylers I've seen are riding boards 137 or bigger. You're right that a smaller board will turn quicker...I don't see them being easier to jump with...not at 97kg anyway...what you need for that is something with good flex and a good rail. Ps...I rode a 12m Bandit 4 today for a little while...liked it a lot. Very stable...huge wind range...and nicely put togther. The bar on this one had a slightly old fashioned pull away chicken loop...but the cam cleat depower was good....simple and effective. I noticed it had a couple of battens so doesn't flap around like some similar delta shaped kites I've tried recently. A 12m/9m combo in this (don't know if they do a 9m) would be good for UK conditions. Quote
Silveringsurfer Posted September 29, 2012 Report Posted September 29, 2012 Speak to Steve at North Devon Kitesurfing. He runs a school at Westward Ho and Saunton and will no doubt let you try any of the Best Kites he has - uses Kahoonas in the school. If you can't get hold of him give me a shout and you can meet up and try mine some time - I use 11.5, 9.5 and 7.5 Kahoonas and they are great easy to use kites as cowboy 54 states. Might even have a 2009 11.5 for sale pretty cheap if I get hold of the 2012 kite I'm negotiating for. Quote
